Google Releases Google Fit Preview SDK, Opens Google Fit Developers Community

At Google I/O, we heard a little bit about Google Fit - Google's renewed effort at quantified, managed health data. We heard that multiple partners had signed on and got a taste of what Google Fit would be able to accomplish, but beyond that details were a little hazy.

We were however told a preview SDK would be made available in "coming weeks," (a dreaded phrase to any Google user) and today that promise has been fulfilled. In a post to its Developers Blog, Google has announced the Google Fit preview SDK, explaining that Fit provides a "single set of APIs for apps and device manufacturers to store and access data from fitness apps and sensors," making it easy for apps to provide not just raw fitness data, but useful insights based on those data.

Rumor: Motorola Is Working With Google On Shamu, A Possible Nexus Phone With A 5.9" Display

There's been a lot of confusion lately over the fate of Google's Nexus program. Rumors swirled, after LG's planned Nexus was canceled (and later denied entirely), that the program was dead in favor of an upcoming Android Silver initiative. With the revelation that HTC is working on a 9" tablet device (code named Volantis), it seemed the Nexus program had at least one more device in store - expected to launch with Android's L release this fall. Then, during an interview at Google I/O, Dave Burke appeared to confirm that Google was still invested in the Nexus program, suggesting there might be another Nexus phone coming after all.

'Google Hands-Free' Icon Spotted In Promotional GIF Teases Unreleased In-Car Functionality

Earlier this month, when we recapped all the rumor and leak posts we had published leading up to Google I/O, hands-free functionality called Android Eyes-Free (codenamed KITT) was marked as "partially live." For those in need of a refresher, our post outlined in-car functionality that would carry a stripped-down interface, notifications read aloud by Google, and a new hand-waving gesture used to wake the device.

While the hands-free hotword functionality has already debuted, the dedicated in-car interface, void of any visual chrome, has yet to be revealed (or even really hinted at) by Google.

But a small tidbit spotted in one of Google's promotional gifs today might give us just a little more hope that the functionality is still in progress.

Living With Wear: Some Observations After A Month With Android Wear

Like other Google I/O attendees, I picked up an Android Wear device at the conference. I went with the LG G Watch. What follows is not really a review so much as my experiences and thoughts about Wear thus far, having lived with it literally every day since picking it up. I'll include some of my opinions on the platform (ignoring for now the hardware), and what I think might be relevant insights and comparisons to Google's other efforts (like Glass). If you've not had your fill of editorial Wear discussion yet, let's get started.

I'll confess - I've never owned a smart watch before the G Watch.

[For Developers] Google I/O 2014 Wrap-Up: The Must-See Sessions For Every Developer

Google I/O was pretty amazing this year, right? We got the deets on Material design, a preview version of Android L, the formal release of Android Wear, the first manifestations of Android TV and Android Auto, and plenty of other bits and pieces. However, all of that content and all of those developer sessions can take forever to absorb, and professional developers just don't have time for that. Now that all of the videos have been posted, I've combed through every last one to narrow the list down to just the sessions that absolutely can't be missed.

Like my post from last year, the goal is to point out videos that are important for as many developers as possible.
