Editorial: iOS 10 is Apple’s not-so-secret love letter to Android

Three years ago, if you had told me “Apple is copying features from Android and putting them in iOS,” I would have absolutely believed you. If you had told me “Apple is now essentially modeling iOS on Android,” I would have called you crazy. With the announcement of iOS 10 on Monday, I thought I was losing it - though admittedly in a good way. That’s because iOS 10 looks and feels like an Apple admission that Google’s vision of the future of smartphones has been right all along.

There is no doubt that the headline feature of iOS 10 as far as Apple and Google is the opening of Siri to developers.

[Update: Study Seriously Flawed] After 45,000 Page Loads, Extensive Study Determines Android's Browser Is 52% Faster Than iPhone's

Update: After getting a lot of initial press, experts are weighing in and crying foul with the methodology of this study. Apparently the custom app the researchers used relied on Apple's UIWebView, which doesn't utilize recent optimizations made to the actual Safari browser.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball says:

"That's not to say it isn't interesting that Android's WebView for apps is faster than iOS's UIWebView for apps, but it just isn't true that these results are indicative of anything regarding Mobile Safari's performance. It's easy to see that Mobile Safari is faster than UIWebView - just run something like the SunSpider benchmark twice, once in Mobile Safari and once in any app from the App Store with a web content view.

When It Comes To Ads, Android Users Are 80% More Valuable Than iPhone Users

Dan Ruby, Research Director for ad firm Chitika, just pinged us to share his latest Android research findings. The research compared the Apple and Google mobile platforms to determine which is more profitable for advertising, and the answer is overwhelmingly Android. When we say overwhelmingly, we mean by 80%:


As usual, this is based on Chitika's ad network - so while the numbers are likely pretty accurate, they're not necessarily official.


All of the studied platforms have an equal pay-out rate, but Android users have a significantly higher ad click rate - nearly 1.2% of ads displayed are clicked on, versus about .65% for the iPhone.
