[Updated x3] Download: New 'Experiments' Gmail Feature Shows Up In Android 4.0.3 - Here's How To Get it On Your Android 4.0+ Device

It has been two weeks since Android 4.0.3 started rolling out to the Transformer Prime, which made it the first tablet to officially receive the update. With a new version of Android, be it incremental or not, comes new and improved GApps, most of which we've already taken a close look at.

In Android 4.0.3, however, a new Gmail feature has been uncovered by ComputerWorld that is noticeably missing in its 4.0.2 brother: experiments. Sounds dangerous, no?

As you can see, these "experiments" is really just a couple of useful options that someone at Google probably deemed "worth including, but not entirely stable."

The first option, Enter full text search, is pretty self explanatory - it indexes full messages, which allows you to search through all of the text for keywords; a useful feature indeed.

Editorial: Steve Wozniak Isn't Afraid To Criticize iOS's Shortcomings, And We Shouldn't Be Afraid To Call Out Android's

When I read the comments of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in an interview with The Daily Beast, my first thought was "this sounds like an eminently reasonable man making some well-reasoned points." Of course, being an Android site, we took interest in Wozniak's comments on Android's superior (in some respects) voice commands, as well as his praise of its workable built-in navigation solution (something iOS currently lacks outright).

I've used Siri. It's pretty fun (and funny) at times. But in my opinion, it doesn't do many things better than Android's voice commands (word recognition is, perhaps, a little better - though I've not compared it to Android 4.0's instant STT engine, which I've heard is a big improvement).

[CES 2012] Huawei MediaPad To Receive ICS Update By The End Of Q1, A New Line Of Colors Coming Soon After

If you're a Huawei MediaPad owner, you'd better get ready for some delicious Ice Cream Sandwich, because all existing versions of the tablet will receive the update to Android 4.0 by the end of the first quarter. In addition, all new MediaPads shipped after the update hits will have ICS pre-loaded.

If you're thinking about buying the tablet anytime soon, there will be some color options added to the mix. You'll have the option of the existing silver model, as well as black, brown, or pink. Sound good? I know I've always wanted a pink brown tablet.

Lenovo wasn’t on the list of Google TV partners, but for good reason: the company has just announced that, in addition to its new tablet and smartphone, it will soon be launching a “Smart TV” powered by none other than Ice Cream Sandwich.

Indeed, Lenovo hasn’t abandoned all hope of an Android-based TV OS; in fact, the situation is in reality quite the opposite – with the K91, it’ll be embracing everyone’s favorite robot completely. Its (presumably heavily) modified version of the OS will feature:

  • Video on Demand that tailors itself to your viewing history
  • “Internet applications” (it’s not quite clear whether this indicates something outside of ICS’ regular contents, or just Google’s traditional web browser)
  • “Traditional TV programs” (again, it’s not quite clear what’s meant by this)
  • Access to the Android Market (of course)
  • Access to the Lenovo Store
  • Voice control
  • Cloud support (yep, that’d be the “personal cloud”)

[CES 2012] Acer Unveils Iconia A700 Tablet, Quad-Core Tegra 3 Processor, 1080p Display, Ice Cream Sandwich - Coming Q2 2012

We arrived at CES earlier today, and Acer's pre-CES event was the first item on our agenda (yes, on a Sunday). The company unveiled a number of ultrabooks. a new cloud service, and briefly mentioned that it was bringing a brand-new Android tablet to market later this year - so briefly that we didn't even hear the name of the device mentioned (obviously, we later found out what it was called).

The Iconia A700 will be the company's second attempt at a flagship, 10.1-inch Android tablet. While we didn't grab any hands-on time with the new tab at Acer's press event earlier today, we watched the device demoed and it looks fairly impressive.

ASUS: Android 4.0 Will Be Coming To The Eee Pad Transformer (TF101) ASAP After The Prime Update

Here's a bit of good news for all the OG Transformer owners out there - ASUS has confirmed via its UK Facebook page that the original tablet-netbook hybrid device will indeed be receiving an update to Ice Cream Sandwich. While it was previously assumed that ASUS would continue to support this older-but-still-awesome device, it's good to see the company step up and publicly confirm that the update is coming instead of leaving users questioning it for months.

A quick rump over the to official TF101 landing page also confirmed the upgrade, as it now proudly displays "4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgradable" text alongside its current software version information.

Samsung Galaxy S "Value Pack" Update Leaked – Brings Minor UI Changes, Face Unlock, And More

It's been a rather wild ride for Samsung Galaxy S users regarding a possible update to Android 4.0. First, Samsung, issued a statement saying that they could not update their former flagship phone. After a community outcry, however, they responded with a different possibility - a "Value Pack" update, one that would include some key features from Ice Cream Sandwich (such as Face Unlock) but which would still be based on Gingerbread. Samsung later decided to not go through with the Value Pack update.

The plot has thickened once again, however: a version of the update has been leaked, and while it may not be as good as Ice Cream Sandwich itself, it does bring a host of improvements:

  • Face Unlock
  • Updated Camera
  • Photo Editor from Galaxy SII
  • Unlock screen from Galaxy Note
  • General improved performance

The firmware, which is based on Android 2.3.6, is available for download from the links below, but it at this time it's unclear if or when Samsung will officially release the final version of the update to the general public.

Beansoft Builds On The ICS Browser, Releases 'Browser Plus' To The Market

The stock ICS is browser is the best stock Android browser to date, there's no doubt about that. However, it's not perfect - it's actually missing one crucial setting: UA string switching. On the other side of the table, it brings a killer feature over from Honeycomb (found in settings > labs) called quick controls. Once enabled, the URL bar will disappear, giving you more screen real estate for browsing. To access the settings menu, address bar, tab bar, etc., a simple tap on either side of the screen will bring up a circular menu with all of the options right there.

Editorial: Samsung To "Review" Possibility Of Galaxy S, Tab Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrades, But Why?

After initially deciding it wouldn't update Galaxy S phones to Ice Cream Sandwich last week, Samsung has now (supposedly) given some semi-official lip-service to vocal Galaxy S and OG-Tab owners who have been clamoring for an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich. The English-speaking side of Samsung's media arm hasn't commented on the alleged statement as of yet.

According to a translation of the Korean source articles, Samsung has officially committed to "reviewing" the "possibility" of an Ice Cream Sandwich update for its Galaxy S phones, as well as the original Galaxy Tab. If that's not a concrete statement almost completely assuring that Samsung will, at some point, say something about this topic again, I don't know what is.
