Dell Streak Android 2.2 Froyo Update For Unlocked Devices Rolling Out Now, Carrier Specific In December

As we mentioned over the weekend, the UK Dell Streaks were on the verge of finally getting that sweet, delicious Froyo upgrade, and now we are able to provide the rollout schedule in more detail.

Starting November 15th, which is pretty much now, carrier unlocked devices will start to receive OTA (over-the-air) notifications allowing the Froyo update to be downloaded and applied. Carrier locked Streak OTAs will follow later on in December due to having to jump through extra hoops, i.e. the carriers, before any updates can be allowed to trickle in. Your Streak will check for a firmware update upon boot but you can force the check manually by going to Settings > About > System Updates.

Verizon Launching $80 LG Vortex November 18

We always knew Verizon and AT&T would be getting their hands on devices much like T-Mobile's Optimus T and Sprint's Optimus S; we just didn't know when they would start selling them. Well, you can now cross the former of the two off your list, for Big Red just announced that the LG Vortex will be coming to its stores come November 18th, along with:

  • Android 2.2 with full access to the Android Market
  • Bing Search and Bing Maps (ugh - why is this listed as a feature anyways?)
  • WiFi connectivity (no word on 802.11n compatibility just yet)
  • 3G Mobile Hotspot capability, no doubt with a nice fat fee attached
  • Swype
  • Skype pre-installed
  • VZ Navigator as well as an array of pre-installed LG apps (hurray for bloatware!)
  • 5 or 7 (who knows what that means) customizable home screens
  • microSD card slot with support for cards of capacities of up to 32 GB
  • a 3.2 MP autofocus camera
  • two colors - black and violet
  • a $79.99 price tag

Nothing too groundbreaking here, especially considering T-Mobile will sell you a nearly identical phone for just $29, but the folks over at XDA-developers may be able to hook the Vortex up with a few custom ROMs if nothing else.

Android 2.2 Froyo Coming To European Dell Streak Before The End Of The Month

Android 2.2 isn't new by any means, but if you're using Dell's five-inch Streak, it looks like you're only now going to receive the update:

Worse still, this only applies to Streaks in the UK - the rest of us will just have to keep holding out. Before you go off to silently pout in a corner, though, there is one more twist to this story - what's actually contained in the update:

To recap, it looks like Dell will soon be allowing customers to download the update  directly from its website (much like Motorola has done with the Backflip and the Cliq for the update to Éclair), although actually installing the update will wipe all data from the device.

Google Instant Rolling Out For Froyo Devices, Enter Keys Start Feeling Unloved

Launched to much hyperbole back in September, Google Instant is now making the transition from your desktop browser to your mobile device. Those of you graced with the goodness of Froyo can now experience the same mind-melding AJAX tomfoolery on your handset as you do on a computer. As in the desktop version, Instant is an optional function and you can easily switch it on and off right from the search page. You may have also noticed that it requires significantly faster internet connection speeds to work properly, so in the case of a mobile device you're probably best sticking to using it only on WiFi or in strong 3G/4G areas.

T-Mobile Comet Launching November 3rd - $9.99 On Contract

Well folks, we had a date for the launch of the T-Mobile Comet and now we have a price-$9.99 with a $50.00 rebate on contract. This, coupled with the carrier’s new $10.00/200MB data plan makes for a very good price point for this entry-level smartphone. The Comet will feature 7.2Mbps HSPA, FM radio, an integrated Swype keyboard, microSD expansion up to 32GB, and a 3 megapixel camera. On top of all of that, it will be powered by Froyo! All of this makes for a pretty bad ass device, with the only downside being the QVGA screen.

While this might not attract a hardcore smartphone enthusiast like myself, I can really see a lot of first time smartphone buyers being interested in this.

Alpha Froyo ROM Released For ZTE Blade / Orange San Francisco

Here's some great news for owners of the budget flavour-of-the-month, the ZTE Blade. Saddled with Éclair at birth, the dudes over at MoDaCo's ZTE Blade section have given their phones a new lease of life with a Froyo port from the domestic Chinese model to their beloved Orange San Francisco.

The ROM is very much in the Alpha stage right now, but even so it is very exciting news for those of you who have heard of the Blade. For those of you scratching your heads in bewilderment, stay tuned - our ZTE Blade review will be up early next week.

Motorola: DROID X Has Froyo "Issues" - Fixes Coming... At Some Point

Motorola has acknowledged the complaints of a number of DROID X owners who have upgraded to Android 2.2 and are experiencing "issues" related to the update. Some of the issues are minor, but a couple (failure to boot, kernel panic) are definitely not. Motorola is saying the bugs have been squashed, but the fixes will be incorporated into a yet-to-be-announced "future software release." Here's what a Moto employee on the DROID X support forum had to say:

T-Mobile Introduces The LG Optimus T: Android Babysteps

Although the name may be reminiscent of Optimus Prime, this phone might not live up to the most powerful Autobot. Think of the Optimus T as an Android feature phone with the stats of a mid-range device.

It comes packed with the following specs:

  • Android 2.2 FroYo
  • 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen
  • 3.2MP Camera (no Flash - what is this, 2005?)
  • Wifi (includes Mobile Hotspot Option)
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth

The Optimus T appears to be the exact opposite of what most people are expecting to see from handset manufacturers: a starter phone. Most of you who are reading this blog are probably hoping to see the latest and greatest in Android handsets, but LG is aiming at the users who are on the fence about Android.

CyanogenMod 6 Coming Soon To Epic 4G? [PIC]

 The invasion continues! Development of CyanogenMod 6 for the Epic 4G is clearly coming along nicely, as a picture of it running has just been released as a quick "status update" on the CM forums.

The fact that it is actually running on the device is encouraging, but we could still be pretty far away from a testable version: no downloads are available yet, and if you look at the notification bar, you'll see a pretty significant bug in this build. Still, if you're desperately awaiting Android 2.2 (or just vanilla Android) on your Epic, just know that it's on the way.

T-Mobile Announces The New myTouch: Next Gen Snapdragon, Front Facing Camera, HSPA+, Android 2.2

Just in time for the discontinuation of the original myTouch, the rumored myTouch HD has been made official, albeit with a slight name change (HD has been dropped). And the device is rocking some pretty impressive specs, which may just be enough to draw people away from the G2:

  • Next generation 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 5 megapixel camera with 720p capture
  • Front facing camera for video calling over Wi-Fi and 3G
  • 3.8" WVGA screen
  • Genius Button
  • Android 2.2 (possibly with Espresso UI)
  • HSPA+ capabilities

Unfortunately, despite the awesome specs we have available, there's no word on pricing, and the only information we have on a release date is "in time for the holidays." But, right now, the only question on my mind is: when can I pre-order this beast?
