If you are a Sprint Hero owner and want the latest official 2.1 update baked into a custom ROM with root, then you currently have only one alternative - the Fresh ROM.

Custom ROMs For The Hero

There are pretty much only 2 main Sprint Hero custom ROMs - DamageControl (by damageless and TrevE) and Fresh (by flipz). Both are very good, have an excellent track record, and great communities behind them.

I've personally been using DamageControl on my Hero but post-official 2.1 update, flipz has moved a little faster than damageless and TrevE, and incorporated it into his Fresh ROM pretty much on the next day, while DamageControl is still stuck at 2.08.1.

LG_Ally Full

Just like most Verizon Android phones, the LG Ally garnered plenty of hype with its advertising campaign – in this case, it was used as a promotional tie-in with Iron Man 2. With only a 600 MHz CPU and 3.2MP camera, it’s a pretty mid-range phone, but you’re also getting Android 2.1 and hardware keyboard, so at $99 it’s not an awful phone.

The phone was set for release on May 20, but now it seems that release has been pushed back. Instead of being available for sale, the Ally is still listed as pre-order only, and customers who had already pre-ordered one were greeted with the following email:

Dear Valued Customer,

This notification is to inform you that Verizon Wireless has received your pre-order of the LG Ally.

BREAKING: Android 2.2 Froyo OTA Now Available For The Nexus One!

Check the bottom for the most recent updates

It looks like Google has started the rollout process of Froyo to the Nexus One. Go to your device's settings and have it check for updates - there is a chance that you can download it right now.

MG Siegler of TechCrunch has successfully performed the update after seeing an update notification on his Nexus One and snapped the photos below.

At the Google I/O conference, the only answer I could get from Android developers regarding Froyo release to the N1 was "soon". However, they hinted that it would *really* soon, and so I was very skeptical of baseless updates like this one claiming a June release date without a source to back it up.

Since a lot of you have been wondering, I wanted to post a brief confirmation that the official version of the HTC Hero 2.1 update Sprint released today is exactly the same as the one we covered on May 14th, 5 days ago.

Both files share the following characteristics:

  • 124139523 bytes (118M)
  • Version 2.27.651.5

HTC's servers are so slammed right now that I am getting about 3KB/s downloading - you might as well download the leaked file instead - they're exactly the same.

Happy updating, guys!

Even though this particular phone is considered an entry level device, it does comes sporting Android 2.1 with an updated Sense UI, which should make a lot of people happy.

Here is a screenshot of the announcement made by T-Mobile UK via twitter

Leaked Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 Update Surfaces, Sprint Reportedly Confirms It's Real But Not Yet Released Officially

Wow, did this day finally come? After months and months of waiting, and after seeing Samsung Moment get its update today, we have gotten word from AndroidCentral that there is a leak of the official Android 2.1 update for the Sprint HTC Hero available to download.

Judging from initial reports, this is the real deal.

allanon80 from AndroidCentral even posted this:

Ok guys just got off the phone with Sprint. THis is the official release they have just not put it up on Sprint yet. Sprint got the release just at about the same time as the leak. The Advance Tech support actually sent me to this site for the release since it is not at Sprint yet.

Samsung Moment Android 2.1 Update Now Really Officially Released By Sprint

Yesterday we reported on the Samsung Moment 2.1 update arriving early due to a Sprint's goof - the update page showed no sign of the update but the file you would download was that one and only long awaited Android 2.1.

We later saw reports that the update was pulled, though could not find any evidence of that, as the .exe file seemed to remain at 100MB+, which was the same as the 2.1 file.

Well, now it doesn't matter as today, Sprint officially released the update and updated the Samsung Moment software page with this information:

Software update for the Samsung Moment

Enhance the features and capabilities of your Samsung Moment with this software update, including 2.1 Android update.

Samsung Moment Android 2.1 Update Goes Live Early, Available Now From Sprint, Already Rooted

We are still trying to assemble all the bits and pieces but it looks like Sprint was preparing the 2.1 upgrade for tomorrow, May 14th but uploaded the updater and the new instructions today.

A user of SDX-Developers by the name of chrisfeltdrum was downloading what he thought was an older, previously released in February update, when he realized the OS version he upgraded to was actually Android 2.1.

Chris immediately posted this information to the SDX-Developers forum for confirmation, and in a matter of minutes other users have confirmed the update was indeed official 2.1 and not the old Feburary release.

EXCLUSIVE: AndroidPolice.com's Nexus One Is Running Android 2.2 Froyo. How Fast Is It Compared To 2.1? Oh, Only About 450% Faster
Last Updated: June 5th, 2012

Upcoming Frozen Goodness

Folks, we have a Nexus One. We also have Froyo. In fact, we have the two mixed together in the most delicious frozen-yogurty Android 2.2 kind of way you can imagine.

Not much has been officially released by Google about Android 2.2 - probably less than any other release to date. We all have a hunch about some new features but Google wouldn't officially confirm or deny any of them, other than the one about Flash 10.1.

They're saving it for May 19th-20th, and we're OK with that.

However, one of our team members has been playing with a Nexus One running Froyo for about a week now, getting more and more visibly excited every day.
