[I/O 2013] New Numbers: 900 Million Android Activations Worldwide, 4.5 Billion People Are Now Google's Target

Speaking at Google I/O, Android and Chrome chief Sundar Punchai just let on that there has now been over 900 million device activations. However, Google can't rest on its laurels. In the same breath as the announcement that Google has reached nearly a billion users in just a few years, the company showed off a map of countries where Android has less than 10% penetration. Those countries are green in the map below:

The message to the rest of the world is clear: Google's on its way to your town, too.

Schmidt: Android Reaches 1.5m Daily Activations, Facebook Home Is Exactly What Android Was Designed For

Back in September of last year, Google chairman Eric Schmidt told us that Android had reached 1.3 million daily activations every day. Today, he tells us that number is up to 1.5 million, which is actually not that staggering of an increase. Andy Rubin said the number was 900,000 per day in June of 2012, so the increase from there to September was much, much faster than the increase from September to now. Still, it's an impressive number on its own. Oh and the total number of devices activated will cross one billion in "six to nine months." Not bad.

Imagine, if you will, that every man, woman, and child in Europe owned an Android device. That still wouldn't account for every device that's been made, sold, and activated, according to the latest blog post from Google CEO Larry Page. In the same message that revealed Andy Rubin would be leaving his position as the head of Android development, Page mentioned almost in passing that Android had surpassed 750 million activated devices, including smartphones, tablets, and various other gadgets.

The pace of innovation has never been greater, and Android is the most used mobile operating system in the world: we have a global partnership of over 60 manufacturers; more than 750 million devices have been activated globally; and 25 billion apps have now been downloaded from Google Play.

Eric Schmidt Reveals New Activation Numbers – 1.3 Million Android Devices Activated Each Day

Eric Schmidt has just left the stage at Motorola's "On Display" event in New York. Before leaving, though, he divulged some interesting new Android-related numbers.

First among them was the latest figure for "activations per day," which tracks the total number of new Android devices activated each and every day. You may remember Andy Rubin revealing that number to be around 900,000 while quashing rumors back in June, but according to Schmidt, the total number of daily activations has now topped 1.3 million. That's 1,300,000 – an undoubtedly impressive number.

Out of that 1.3 million devices per day, Schmidt noted that 70,000 were tablets.

Android Head Andy Rubin Not Leaving Google As Rumored, Cites 900,000 Android Activations Each Day

Influential tech personality, and sometimes well-meaning rumormonger Robert Scoble kicked up some controversy earlier today when he reported via Google+ that Google's Andy Rubin was preparing to make an exit. Rubin, Scoble claimed, was planning to leave Google to take charge of a new startup called CloudCar. Andy Rubin has always been in charge of Android, so his departure would have cast an undeniable pallor over the upcoming Google I/O.

Just a few hours after Scoble posted his thoughts on the matter, Andy Rubin came out of the woodwork on Twitter to make it clear he was not leaving Google. Rubin was the founder of Android, which was bought by Google back in 2005.

Android Keeps Rolling Forward: 3.7 Million Devices Activated Over Christmas Weekend

Did you give or receive an Android device for Christmas? Even if you did not, it looks like a whole host of people found the green robot under their tree this Christmas. According to a tweet from the ever-so-candid Android head Andy Rubin, 3.7 million Android devices were activated over the 24th and 25th of December.

UPDATE: There were 3.7M Android devices activated on 12/24 and 12/25.

Just over a week ago we reported that device activations had hit about 700k a day, which suggests that the Christmas weekend figures of approximately 1.85 million activations, per day, is a significant increase.

Boom, Baby! Over 700,000 Android Devices Being Activated Every Day

Intrepid Google+ user and Android head Andy Rubin mentioned yesterday that there are now over 700,000 Android devices being activated every day.

Wow.

Although it is clearly an astounding number of daily activations, the increase appears to be quite steady. In August it was reported that over 550,000 Android devices were being activated daily, with a total of 150 million devices activated worldwide. In June the number of daily activations was 500,000, while in May it was only 400,000. At this rate of growth, Android is likely to hit 1 million activations per day quite soon.

With such rapid increases in activations, it is no surprise that Android now holds over 50% of the global smartphone market share.

150 Million Android Devices Now Activated Worldwide, With 550,000 More Being Added Daily

Hot on the heels of its acquisition of Motorola for $12.5 billion this morning, Google has announced on its blog that Android is now running on 150 million devices worldwide.

That figure is up a whopping 20 million on last month's 130 million, with the post also mentioning that an additional 550,000 units are being activated every day across 123 countries (though we already knew that).

With these numbers, there's no doubt that the growth of Android is as strong as it ever has been, and it goes without saying that the death of our favorite platform has been greatly exaggerated.

A little over a year ago, Google was activating 100,000 Android devices every day. That seemed like a huge number at the time, but compared what the future would bring, that's small-time. Several months later - in December, 2010 - that number had risen to 300,000 activation per day, effectively tripling the number of Android devices in just seven months. At Google I/O last month, it was announced that activations were still on the rise, and had hit 400,000 per month. Today, Andy Rubin took to Twitter to let us know how much Android has grown in just one month.

Google Says Over 3 Billion Android Apps Have Been Installed And 350,000 Devices Are Being Activated Per Day

On their earnings call today, Google revealed some impressive stats about Android, courtesy of Jeff Huber, Senior VP of Commerce and Local. There were three notable facts, in particular: there have been over 3 billion Android apps installed, downloads of Android apps are up 50% in the last quarter, and 350,000 Android devices are being activated per day. Whoa, whoa, and whoa.

Given that we've heard about the massive number of activations before, perhaps the most impressive numbers are those about apps. As TechCrunch so eloquently puts it: "The first billion installs took 20 months, the second billion installs took another 5 months, and the third billion took only 2 months." Given that downloads jumped a ridiculous 50% in the past three months, it the next 3 billion will likely happen in no time at all.
