PSA: Google Is Apparently Deleting Old, Unused Accounts Without Warning—Time To Back Up

Users are reporting that Google has started slashing and burning old accounts in recent days, seemingly with no warning. The first sign something is wrong comes in the form of an alert sent to the user's backup email informing them their Google account has been deleted because of an unresolved terms of service violation. Whatever is going on, it's probably time to backup any unused accounts you have sitting around.

The Gmail support forums are packed with users reporting their old accounts have been nuked, and several Reddit threads have popped up in the last few days as well. Most affected users say the deleted accounts hadn't been used in a long time, possibly years.

Update Wednesday is starting off with a new version of the Gmail app. There don't appear to be any grand changes with this release, but it does boast at least a couple minor improvements. The only obvious change in this update comes in the form of a new full screen workflow for adding email accounts. A quick teardown also reveals that users will have the option to add vacation responders to their Exchange accounts, and Gmail's Unsubscribe feature is coming soon.

A Quick Hands-On Look At Inbox By Gmail

Today, Google officially announced Gmail Blue Inbox, a service we posted about just last night. Previously codenamed Bigtop, Inbox by Gmail is a full reimagining of how an email product should work, and how users should interact with their email.

It is really rare for a product to come out that actually reimagines something rather than just claiming it does, but Inbox is really a fresh take on... the inbox. Though the product is just in its first release (and doesn't handle all your email services as we thought it would - a feature that ended up in Gmail), it already looks promising.

Google's been updating apps left and right recently to fall in line with its new material design philosophy, and the results have been impressive. There are a few apps it appears Google's saving for the final Lollipop release though - Gmail 5.0 among them.

While we won't be distributing the updated Gmail app until the official update is released, we will be sharing a goody from the new onboarding process, which shows some of the new awesomeness coming to the app in its overhaul.

Specifically, it looks like Google's gearing up to handle all your email with Gmail, not just your Gmail account.

For Developers: Android Developer Console Can Now Be Shared Between Multiple Team Members

Android developer console, which Android devs use to publish and manage applications, now supports multiple users without having to share a single account (and, more importantly, its password).

This may not be a big deal to one-person teams, but for larger companies it's pure gold. The addition of these user accounts also carries the benefit of fine-grained controls over permissions. Currently the only togglable permission is access to financial reports, but the Android team promised to roll out more in the future.

This is what the interface looks like before you invite anyone:

And here's what happens after you do:
