T-Mobile Expands HSPA+ Coverage To 8 New Areas

T-Mobile is claiming that they have the largest "4G" network in the country, and they must be pretty serious about defending that title - they've just rolled out their HSPA+ network, theoretically capable of download speeds of 21Mbps, to these eight areas:

  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Grand Junction, Colorado
  • Harlingen, Texas
  • Lafayette and South Bend, Indiana
  • Montgomery, Alabama
  • Roanoke-Lynchburg, Virginia
  • Youngstown, Ohio

These were all listed on T-Mobile's 4G coverage map as "coming soon", so if you're still on that list, T-Mobile is probably already working to cover you. After all, they're still planning on covering 200 million people by the end of the year, and they don't have much time left.

Sprint's HTC Knight To Be A WiMax QWERTY Slider?

Even though it's only the third largest network in the United States, Sprint has a habit of cranking out some pretty nice Android devices. With the legacy of the EVO and Epic to live up to, the rumored HTC Knight is going to have to be something pretty special to be considered a true flagship. But will it really be the flagship we're all hoping for? Boy Genius Report got a tip today which adds further confusion to the matter. While their source suggests a QWERTY keyboard and 4G, as well as the tantalizing notion of a dual-core processor, Boy Genius himself concludes that the Knight is "not looking like a flagship phone at this point in time".

Sprint 4G Now Officially Live In Sacramento, CA

Smack down in between the New York Sprint 4G launch on November 1st and the upcoming Los Angeles launch on December 1st, Sprint announced today that the California state capital is also joining the WiMax party, effective immediately. Sacramento residents will now be able to enjoy average download speeds of 3-6 Mbps and upload speeds of around 500 Kbps-1.5 Mbps.

Now does anyone know what phone the governator is sporting?

Last night, XDA user Firon posted a flashable, pre-rooted, deodexed, and zip-aligned version of the Froyo leak for the Samsung Epic 4G. This is good news because the Galaxy S phones are hurting for some Froyo love, and Samsung seems to be taking its sweet time with it.

As with any leaked ROM, the DJ29 Froyo build for the Epic 4G is going to be anything but flawless.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Says "Me Too!", Joins The Permanent Full Root Club

Hot on the heels of this morning's full and permanent G2 and Desire Z root, XDA-Devs members (apparently headed by grankin01) have released a similarly full and permanent root for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. In fact, the method is very nearly the same, in grankin's words:

unforgiven512 [who contributed to the G2 root] deserves most of the credit for this tutorial as all I did was rewrite this tutorial in my own words (while looking at his in another window), edit the kernel module, and paste links to it and the hboot file with this tutorial. Also, thanks to adwinp for the instructions on hexeditting the kernel module to make it work with our devices.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Edges Out Win Over iPhone 4 In Wirefly's Browser Speed Test

Our good friends at Wirefly released a video a few days ago showing a browser speed test between the new T-Mobile myTouch 4G and Apple's iPhone 4. The results added another win for the Android crowd, as the myTouch 4G bested the iPhone 4 in both tests.

The win gets even sweeter, though: the second page loads faster on the MT4G, even with the embedded YouTube video (albeit, it doesn't actually load the video). Andrew (of Wirefly) reminds us that "... there's one big difference here - this [the MT4G] has YouTube on the page, and YouTube is, of course, Flash - whereas the iPhone 4 does not have Flash, so it can't render that part of the webpage."

T-Mobile Goes After The iPhone And AT&T In A New 4G Campaign [Video]

Yesterday, T-Mobile officially rebranded its new HSPA+ network as "4G" in an effort to gain that extra G that consumers are so obsessed with (relevant: [1] [2]). In order to promote this newly proclaimed largest 4G network in the country along with the myTouch 4G that was released today, the company launched a video campaign that will air on major TV networks and websites.

The first campaign video features a fresher, younger, and even more vibrant replacement for Catherine Zeta-Jones (who has been T-Mobile's regular face in the last few years) in a familiar and kind of overplayed "Hi, I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" style.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Available Now - $199 On Contract, Four Colors To Choose From

While we linked a pretty impressive Wirefly deal for pre-ordering the MyTouch 4G a while back, if you didn't take advantage of it, the phone is now available to everyone on T-Mobile's website for $199 after a mail-in rebate on a 2-year contract, new or extended. Presumably the device can be found at your local T-Mobile store as well.

If you're not fond of the contractual ball and chain, the MyTouch 4G will set you back $450 purchased standalone, sans contract. Considering the phone's feature set (4G [well, HSPA+], front facing camera, 720P video capture), this is a pretty competitive off-contract price.

HTC Finally Gives You A Dock For Your EVO

It's been a while since we've heard about the official HDMI dock for the HTC EVO 4G, but it looks like it's finally landed. You can go to a Sprint store right now and pick one up for $39.99, which is a fair price for an ultra-shiny docking station and a 6-foot HDMI cable.

As with a dock for any other phone, the EVO dock is no exception to the rule of not playing nicely with cases or extended batteries of any sort, provided they add even a millimeter of thickness to the bottom of the phone. Despite the fact that you have to make your phone naked to use it, the dock still definitely looks like a worthwhile purchase to me.

Sprint Fires Up 4G in New York City, NY; Hartford, New Haven, CT; New Brunswick, Trenton, NJ; Tampa, FL

Can't say we didn't see this one coming - exactly on schedule, Sprint today officially launched its 4G WiMax service in The Big Apple. In addition to NYC, 5 other cities that went live today include Hartford and New Haven in Connecticut, New Brunswick and Trenton in New Jersey, and Tampa in good old Florida.

Epic 4G and EVO 4G users, fire up your devices and give these new networks a good test so that you can feel better about paying that $10 "premium data" fee for all those months before 4G.
