HTC EVO 4G Receiving Update - Brings Swype, Updates Sprint Apps, And Adds Some Spam

If you had Swype beforehand and you install the update, you may have issues with it. If you do:

... go into the installed applications settings (not the swype settings). First you must clear the application data, then uninstall the application. Then you must shutdown the phone. Then, of course, you must turn it on again. Then you can tap & hold in any text entry field, and you’ll get an “Input method” selection dialogue where you can select Swype again.

T-Mobile G2 On Sale For Just $49.99 On Contract

The T-Mobile G2 is a great phone that would, no doubt, make a fantastic Christmas gift. But up until now, we haven't been treated to many deals on the device (with the exception of Amazon Wireless' Black Friday sale) - obviously not something holiday shoppers are enthusiastic about. That ends today, however, as T-Mobile itself has just trimmed the G2's price tag by $150, making the final price $49.99 on a new two-year contract. Note that since this is a web exclusive, in-store buyers will still have to cough up $199.99. Nonetheless, if it's shipping you're worried about, fear not, for transportation fees will be nonexistent until December 20th.

Sprint's EVO Shift 4G Shows Off Its Sexy Keyboard

Yet another picture of the still unannounced EVO Shift 4G has been uncovered, this time with its stylish slider keyboard fully revealed in what looks to be a press-release quality action shot.

The device is likely Sprint's iteration of Verizon's also unannounced HTC Merge. I've got to say, though, that the Shift 4G looks like it received a far better treatment from HTC's design department. The blue brushed-metal around the keyboard looks great, as do the EVO 4G-style capacitive touch buttons. Verizon's space-age aluminum overtones on the Merge, while streamlined, just don't look as cool as the Shift.

But maybe that's just a matter of taste.

Sprint Taken To Court Over $10 Monthly "Premium Data" Fee

Looks like Sprint's $10 per month "premium data" fee (I like to call it the "4G tax") is coming back to bite them - a class action lawsuit was recently filed against the carrier.

Customers of the HTC EVO 4G as well as the Samsung Epic 4G may be "interested to know" that they can call the law offices of Scott A. Bursor at 646-504-7781 to confirm that they have indeed been charged the $10/month fee. His plaintiffs' argument is that Sprint's customers are already promised unlimited data within the $69.99 "Simply Everything" package.

Thing is, while the plaintiffs certainly do have the right to sue, I have my doubts about this here lawsuit making it anywhere.

New HTC Knight / EVO Shift 4G Photos Show Off World's Ugliest Phone Cases, Confirm 4G

We haven't heard much about the HTC Knight (or EVO Shift 4G, as it may be called) lately, but HTCPedia Shop recently came into possession of some photos of the device - albeit wearing some aesthetically questionable cases.

The phone itself, though, actually looks very slick. Clearly, design points were taken from the EVO 4G, which in my opinion remains the best-looking Android device on the market. As has been previously reported, the Shift 4G will be graced with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, HTC Sense, what appears to be a 3.7" screen, and Sprint's fabulous (if you live in an area with coverage) 4G - as can be seen by the WiMax logo in the pictures.

Verizon's 4G LTE Launches Today - Here Is What You Need To Know

Verizon's long-awaited 4G LTE service, promising speeds of 5-12 Mbps down and 2-5 Mbps up, is launching in 38 major metropolitan markets and over 60 airports today (get the full list here). Since no LTE-capable mobile phones exist on VZW just yet, the only way to experience LTE on the move is by getting 1 of 2 (soon to be 3) 4G USB modems. Unlike Sprint's truly unlimited 4G plans, Verizon's plans carry a data cap: $50 for 5GB or $80 for 10GB, with a $10/GB overage fee. Additionally, Mac OS X support has been left out for now. Not the ideal situation, but if you need 4G speeds and want to go with Verizon, you don't really have any other choice.

Verizon Wireless Announces 4G LTE Details - Arriving December 5th With Ridiculously Expensive Data Plans

As expected, today Verizon Wireless officially unveiled its plans to light up more than 1/3 of America with the next generation 4G LTE network. The switch will be flipped this Sunday, December 5th, but since VZW doesn't have any LTE-enabled mobile phones just yet, the only way to get a taste of the new network will be using one of the two USB modems VZW will be offering: the LG VL600 or the Pantech UML290.

The coverage area is pretty impressive, considering this is the first time LTE will be rolled out in the US - 38 major metropolitan areas and over 60 airports, which is pretty much unchanged from our report in October (see the full list in the PR at the bottom of this post).

Is Sprint About To Release 4G To The Bay Area?

Along with hundreds of thousands of people inhabiting the San Francisco Bay Area, I've been waiting for the Sprint 4G launch ever since Google graciously gifted us the EVO 4G powerhouses back at the I/O conference. In fact, it was June 16th, which happens to be my birthday, when I first noticed a strong 4G signal in Mountain View, not too far from Google's own headquarters. Little did I know back then that the wait was not over, and we wouldn't be getting 4G until the very end of the year.

I am glad to report that the cat is out of the bag, and the tentative when was finally let out by a Sprint rep via twitter.

Sprint 4G Launches In Los Angeles, CA; Washington, D.C.; Miami, FL; Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, OH

As the Thanksgiving weekend is coming to an end, residents of Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Miami, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus can say thank you to Sprint today as well. The nation's 3rd largest mobile carrier announced that 4G, otherwise known as WiMax, is officially live in the aforementioned cities. This puts the Los Angeles area full 2 days ahead of schedule, as the 4G launch there was expected on December 1st. SF Bay Area next, please (the launch there is expected sometime in December)!

Go ahead, fire up your EVOs and Epics, and give the network a good test using the official Speedtest.net app (download below) - after all, your speeds should have increased about 10 times compared to 3G.

EVO Shift 4G Specs Leaked, Could Be Sprint's Desire Z

XDA-developers, who originally leaked details on the phone under the codename HTC Knight, have now provided more information on this bad boy, now known as HTC EVO Shift 4G (model number PG06100). Most of these specs aren't too surprising, but do leave a lot of room for questions:

Android 2.2

Sliding QWERTY Keyboard
3.7″ Screen
800Mhz Processor or 1Ghz Dual Core Snapdragon according to a different source
512MB RAM
5 MP Camera or 8 MP according to a different source
Sprint 4G

Assuming the 800 MHz processor and 5 MP camera are correct, then this is almost definitely Sprint's version of the Desire Z (the same as T-Mobile's G2).
