Tiered Data Coming To Verizon This Summer As Planned, Says CFO - And Family Data Plans?

We knew it was coming. We've known for a while, in fact. But as summer draws near, reality is starting to set in: unlimited data is coming to an end on Verizon. For real. Here's what you need to know (based on what we know): Verizon's CFO told Reuters at a tech conference that tiered data will be implemented this summer, and that all unlimited data options will be eliminated. There was also a suggestion that family plans may (eventually - not with the launch of tiers) get data pooled in a fashion similar to minutes - eliminating the need for individual data plans.

Verizon's LTE Market Hits Nine More Metropolitan Areas, Expands In Five Cities

Verizon's LTE network is probably the hottest thing smokin' right now as far as networks are concerned, and, as of today, it has been expanded to nine more major metropolitan areas including Mobile and Montgomery, Alabama; Greater Fairfield and New Haven, Connecticut; Gainesville, Pensacola, and Tallahassee, Folorida; Fayetteville-Lumberton, North Carolina; and Bryan-College Station and Temple-Killeen, Texas.

Also included in this rollout is an expansion to five areas that currently have LTE coverage: Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Denver, Colorado; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This brings the total number of covered metropolitan areas up to 55 now, which isn't bad considering that VZW just started rolling out LTE in December of 2010.

Confirmed: The (LG) Revolution Will Be Televised May 26 - With Netflix And A Sexy New Black Paint Job

Droid-life just broke the news: the Revolution is coming, on May 26th, to be precise.

That's right - the LG Revolution, Verizon's third 4G LTE smartphone, is dropping next Thursday to a Verizon near you - packing a 4.3" WVGA display, a 1GHz MSM-series Snapdragon processor (same one you'll find in the Thunderbolt), and a 16GB SD card pre-installed.

The revolution has received a cosmetic touch-up for its debut next week, and now sports a sleek black battery cover and frame (it was brushed aluminum-look, previously), take a look:

We took a look at the Revolution (hands-on here) way back at CES in January, and I had some time to play with it at CTIA back in March.

In part two of our exciting series of HTC leaks today is the system dump (I'm really trying not to make poop jokes, here) of the HTC EVO 3D, Sprint's upcoming flagship smartphone. Again, the intrepid 911sniper blog has provided the goods. I wonder if these things just fall off the back of trucks. Internet trucks, that is.

The EVO 3D is coming this summer, and we spent a little time with it back at CTIA in March (check out our hands-on here), and were thoroughly impressed. The dual-core status, 3D camera and display, along with Sprint's 4G WiMAX make for a killer combo that's sure to live up to the success of the 3D's forefather, the EVO 4G.

Samsung Infuse 4G Now On Sale For $199.99 At AT&T, $149.99 On Amazon Wireless

As promised, from today the AT&T online store is offering the Samsung Infuse 4G for $199.99 with a 2-year contract. The contract requires you to additionally purchase a minimum data service which starts at $15/month. Alternatively, you can pick up the 4G device for $549.99 sans-contract. Oh and there is also free shipping.

Dubbed the "nation's thinnest 4G smartphone", this 8.99mm Android 2.2 device features a gigantic 4.5" Super AMOLED Plus display (it really does look enormous on such a thin profile), a 1.2GHz Hummingbird processor, an 8MP rear camera with 720p video capture, a 1.3MP front camera, and Samsung's proprietary Touchwiz UI.

We all remember the T-Mobile Sidekick. It was the phone to have back before smartphones were a normal, everyday thing. It was the phone that did all the smartphone-y things first. It was built for one main purpose, though; messaging like a demon. It was all about staying in contact with your friends, shooting out emails, and texting all the time, no matter how fast you were driving. It did that job, and it did it damn well. Now that Danger Incorporated is dead, though, can there still be a Sidekick? Well, since Andy Rubin was part of the mastermind team behind Danger and is now heading up the mastermind team behind Android, it's safe to say a worthy successor is possible.

Samsung DROID Charge Review, Or: How Slow, Buggy Software Ruined A Phone

Make no mistake, the DROID Charge is a cool phone. It looks cool. Its boot screen looks cool. Hell, even the camera has been carefully crafted to look like some sort of crazy piece of future-tech.

In the past week, I've had three separate people ask me what phone it was (something that I never experienced with my Nexus One or the HTC Inspire), and then proceed in some way to compliment its appearance or the vividness of its display. Unfortunately, this just goes to show that the Charge is a classic case of "don't judge a book by its cover." Why?

Sprint, Best Buy Now Selling Samsung Nexus S 4G - WiMAX Customers, Get Ready To Experience Stock Gingerbread

Sprint customers hungry for vanilla Gingerbread can stop holding their breaths now - the Nexus S 4G just went on sale. Sprint will charge you $199.99 for the Samsung-made device, but if you're looking for the best bargain in town, you'll want to visit Best Buy - they're selling it for just $149.99 with a new two-year contract. BB's upgrade price is still $199.99, but at least free shipping is offered by both retailers (ETA: 5/11-5/14 at Best Buy; 2-5 business days at Sprint).

As a reminder, this stock Android machine comes loaded with:

4-inch Super AMOLED Contour display with a WVGA (800x480) resolution
WiMAX connectivity
1GHz Hummingbird processor
512MB of RAM
16GB of internal memory

All in all, the handset isn't exactly a spring chicken in terms of specs, but the software is what really matters - and just like T-Mobile's version of the phone, the NS 4G delivers on that front with stock Android 2.3 and Google Voice integration.

U.S. Cellular Goes 4G LTE, 25% Of Customers Will See It Before The Holiday Season

Today, U.S. Cellular announced that it would be bringing 4G LTE services to about a quarter of its customer base in certain areas of Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin before the holiday season this year. Some of the cities that will be included in this initial rollout are Milwaukee, Madison, and Racine in Wisconsin; Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport, Iowa; Portland and Bangor, Maine; and Greenville, North Carolina.

This is just the first of many phases for the carrier to build on its current 3G network, which should bring about a dramatic change in speed and convenience.

T-Mobile Revamping Prepaid Plans, Get Ready For Unlimited Data

On May 22, T-Mobile will be lifting the figurative data gate on its web70 and web50 plans, offering users unlimited data to go along with the unlimited talk and text that is already a part of the deal. As it stands right now, the web70 plan has a 2GB data cap, while the web50 plan only allows for a measly 100MB of data usage. While the latter will get the benefit of unlimited data, there will still be one restriction: the speed will be throttled after 100MB. Fortunately for web70 users, that plan will not suffer the same effect, so you'll be able to surf and download at 3G/4G speeds to your heart's content.
