[Updated] Sprint CEO Announces First Four LTE Markets, Should Be Ready To Go By Mid-2012

Who else wants a piece of the LTE pie? The Now Network does! Sprint CEO Dan Hesse just announced the markets that will kick off the company's LTE rollout, and, interestingly enough, they chose four of the same cities as AT&T did for its LTE-startup (cue conspiracy theories in 3... 2... 1...) - Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, TX; along with Atlanta, GA.

Some users are speculating that this move is so Sprint can directly compete with AT&T, while others are suggesting that it's more technical than that and is actually about tower placements, locations, policies, etc.

AT&T Lights Up Its 4G LTE Network In 11 New Cities, Including New York, San Francisco, And Los Angeles

AT&T started rolling out its 4G LTE network in September of 2011, and it has slowly been lighting up more and more cities across the nation since then. Eleven new markets are seeing the LTE treatment from Ma Bell this morning, including a couple of cities that started to see some LTE action early last month: New York City Metro areas, Austin, TX; Chapel Hill and Charlotte, NC; Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, San Diego, and San Jose, CA; Orlando, FL; and Phoenix, AZ, bringing the total number of cities under AT&T's LTE umbrella up to 26.

While it still may be behind Verizon's LTE network in terms of size, AT&T expects its LTE network to be "largely complete" by the end of 2013.

Verizon Wireless Set To Activate Its 4G LTE Network In Eleven New Markets Tomorrow, December 15th

Adding to its ever-expanding LTE network, Verizon Wireless is all set to hit the blazing fast button in 11 new markets tomorrow, December 15th - a date also rumored to be the U.S. release of the Galaxy Nexus. Perhaps VZW is going for the go big or go home way of thinking to coincide with the release of the most anticipated phone of the year.

The new cities include:

  • Dover, DE
  • Lafayette, IN
  • Fitchburg/Leominster, MA
  • Duluth, The Rochester Area, and St. Cloud, MN
  • Manchester/Nashua, NH
  • Poughkeepsie, NY
  • Findlay/Tiffin and Youngstown/Warren, OH
  • Indiana, PA

Big Red will also be expanding its network coverage in seven existing markets, including:

  • San Diego and San Francisco, CA
  • Washington DC
  • Savannah, GA
  • Chicagoland, IL
  • Baltimore and Hagerstown, MD

This puts over 200 million Americans under the LTE umbrella, definitely an impressive number to achieve in such a short time.

San Francisco Gets Lit Up With AT&T's 4G LTE Network, NYC Still Seeing Spotty Coverage

If you're a citizen of San Francisco and own an LTE capable phone on AT&T's network, you're in luck. It appears that the carrier's new 4G LTE network is now live in SF. While it hasn't been officially announced, it seems to be going strong. If you're in the area, fire up your device and prepare to have your hair blown back.

Interestingly enough, New York City started seeing some high-speed love at the end of last week, but it has only been live in certain parts of the city. It looks like SF is seeing city-wide coverage right off the bat, though, and that ought to cause some rivalry among each area's techies.

Verizon Wireless Reminds Us That It Will Light Up 14 New Cities With 4G LTE, Expand In 4 Markets On November 17th

If you've been waiting for Big Red to show spread the LTE love in your area, your time may come tomorrow. VZW announced fourteen new LTE markets last month, along with plans for expansion in four existing markets, and it's all set to flip the switch tomorrow, November 17th.  Here's the list one more time:

  • Savannah, GA
  • Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, IA
  • Lexington, KY
  • Starkville, MS
  • Kansas City and Springfield/Branson, MO
  • Lincoln, NE

Verizon Offering Double Data Package On LTE Phones Beginning November 8th

Here's a tidbit of good news for those looking to pick up a new 4G LTE device on Verizon this month -- be it the Droid RAZR, HTC Rezound, Galaxy Nexus (granted that it actually comes out this month), or even an existing LTE handset. Starting tomorrow, November 8th, Big Red will be doubling the data for all new or existing customers who re-sign their two year agreement with an LTE phone.

So, instead of being stuck with 2GB of data, you'll have 4GB to play with before overage charges kick in. Sure, it's still not unlimited, but for anyone forced onto a tiered data plan, 4GB is far better than 2GB.  If you're already on a tiered plan and have a 4G device, don't fret -- simply login to your My Verizon account and you'll be able to update your plan to the new 4GB allowance.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Or 10.1 LTE Coming To AT&T At Some Point According To FCC Filing

We try to avoid excessive posts about FCC filings that may or may not be for Android goodies coming to the US, but this one was a dead giveaway for AT&T. Just take a look:

The guys over at WirelessGoodness dug up this picture from a recent FCC filing, and it clearly shows the device is either a Tab 10.1 or 8.9, and that it has the official AT&T 4G LTE logo. Hard to call that a "rumor." It seems likely that AT&T will announce the device before the holiday season.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Prime) Hits Verizon Computers, It's 4G

Another hour, another sign ICS and the Nexus Prime are coming.

Did I say Nexus Prime? I meant Galaxy Nexus. That's pretty much official now. Verizon's Device Management system is giving up the goods this time, listing the Galaxy Nexus (I have to get used to that) in its database.

Also official is the 4G LTE modem, as if Verizon would let anything go out the door without one. Unfortunately. like most company programs, this database looks old and redundant, so it doesn't look like there's much more information to glean from this screenshot. It's not a world phone, if you were somehow expecting that, but that's all there is to see.

Verizon Expanding Its 4G LTE Network By 13 New Cities On November 17th

On October 20th, VZW will be turning on LTE coverage in 20 new markets, and this morning, an announcement was sent out with details of 13 new cities that will be added to the mix on November 17th:

  • Little Rock, AR
  • Savannah, GA
  • Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, IA
  • Lexington, KY
  • Kansas City and Springfield, MO
  • Lincoln, NE
  • Orange County, NY
  • Greater Providence, Rapid City, SD

It's clear that Big Red has no intentions of slowing down until it blankets the entire country with super-fast LTE, and at the rate it's going, that day will probably be pretty soon.

If you're having difficulty controlling your desire to get Gingerbread on your HTC Thunderbolt right now, you're not alone. But, if you've been waiting for the official release, you've probably grown very impatient by this point. It appears the wait is nearing an end, as Verizon's support site now contains a page for the Thunderbolt's long-overdue bump to Android 2.3.4. Here are the changes they've listed:

Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update, Build Number: 2.11.605.3; Baseband: 1.48.00.0906w_1, 0.01.78.0906w_2, for your ThunderBolt by HTC. This update provides several improvements for your device, as well as upgrading to the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Operating System (OS).
