AT&T's 4G LTE Network Live In Eight New Markets, Expanded In One

Slowly but surely, AT&T is trying to close the gap between its LTE network and Verizon's. Today, it announced that its lightning fast LTE network is available in eight new markets:

Detroit, MI
Pittsburgh, PA
Portland, OR
Birmingham, AL
Memphis, TN
Honolulu, HI
Seattle, WA
Sacramento, CA

In addition to these new markets, AT&T's existing LTE network in Miami-Dade County has also been expanded.

AT&T's innovation and investment has resulted in the nation's largest 4G network, covering 275 million people with ultra-fast speeds and a more consistent user experience. That's coverage in 3,000 more 4G cities and towns than Verizon.

Leak: Sprint 4G LTE Will Be Lighting Up In Boston And Chicago In The Next Week

According to an internal document sent to us by a tipster, Sprint will be turning on the four-gee taps in two major US cities this week - Boston and Chicago. As we know, Sprint is in something of a panic-mode in regard to its 4G rollout, and has decided to begin bringing its network online in some locations before it's fully ready. As you can see in the document below, that is exactly what's happening here.

While Sprint isn't ready to call it "launch" time, it's telling employees that they should be informing customers that 4G coverage is being rolled out, and is accessible in "certain areas," but that the experience may not be "optimal." This basically lines up with a press release Sprint sent out earlier this week, which stated that LTE may be available in some regions before an official launch, and that customers are "free to use it" (read: don't complain if it sucks).

Amazon's new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD is impressive enough in its own right, thanks to high-end features and a competitive price of $299. But at the Kindle press event today, CEO Jeff Bezos announced something truly groundbreaking: a Kindle Fire with a 4G LTE connection and an unprecedented data plan. For $499 (the price of the iPad 3, among many others) you get the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, a 4G LTE data connection (almost certainly AT&T) and access to a $49.99-a-year data plan. That's twelve months of 4G LTE, with the unfortunate limit of 250MB a month.

Even with the tiny data limit, which somewhat undercuts Bezos' highlight of HD content, it's a compelling offer.

Sprint Continues To Build LTE Network, Lights Up 4G In Four New Cities

The Now Network continues to march forward in its 4G LTE Network Vision build-out, today announcing four markets in which the LTE switch is being flipped. You may remember Sprint's July statement that it would be bringing LTE to four new cities by September 3rd, and it looks like the carrier has already made good on that promise, with one exception – the list has dropped Sherman-Denison, TX in favor of Sedalia MO. Here's the full lineup of newly christened LTE cities:

While Sprint is more than a little late to the LTE party and still a bit slow on the pick-up, it's always good to see a fresh batch of areas getting access to the burgeoning network.

HTC EVO 4G LTE Receives Software Update To Android 4.0.4, Sense 4.1 (Build 2.13.651.1)

Owners of Sprint's One X-inspired EVO 4G LTE may be interested to know that they can expect a minor software update to begin rolling out over the air today. The update, which carries software build 2.13.651.1, brings the device up to Android 4.0.4 with Sense 4.1 on top, meaning the menu bar fix the HTC One X got a few weeks ago has arrived, among other things.

The update's other offerings include a fix for random browser closes, a minor Bluetooth fix, an updated version of both Google Wallet and Sprint's Visual Voicemail, and an LTE scanning improvement that should help users better find Sprint's burgeoning 4G network.

Editorial: The $3.6 Billion Spectrum Sale To Verizon That Was Just Approved Is Kind Of Really Shady

The US Department of Justice approved a sale of unused wireless spectrum to Verizon today, marking one of the largest spectrum sales to a single corporate entity in history. The unused portion of the AWS spectrum is owned by a number of cable companies (known collectively as "SpectrumCo") that bought it during the FCC AWS auction back in 2008.

Of course, back in the old spectrum heydays of, uh, four very long years ago, those megahertz were a lot cheaper. In fact, $1.3 billion cheaper. The cable company ~~axis of evil~~ consortium purchased the AWS blocks for a comparatively paltry $2.3 billion at the time.

It's time for Verizon to do its monthly LTE thing, and it looks like 34 new cities are getting the 4G hyperspeed treatment, which finally includes the town in which yours truly resides: Texarkana, TX.

AT&T Activates Its 4G LTE Network In Four New Markets, Expands In Three Others

AT&T just flipped the LTE switch to 'on' for four lucky markets in parts of Florida and Massachusetts, including:

West Palm Beach, FL
Fort Lauderdale, FL
Miami, FL
Worcester Area, MA

It also expanded in a few other markets:

Baltimore, MD
Boston, MA
Washington D.C. (which expanded the network into Northern VA)

While AT&T's still small-ish LTE network pales in comparison to Verizon's nearly-nationwide 4G blanket, it seems to be rolling out new markets on a consistent basis, making sure to cover all the major metropolitan areas.

At this point, you have to wonder if Sprint or T-Mobile will ever catch up.

Sprint's LTE Network Just Went Live In Kansas City - More Markets To Follow?

If you're a Sprint subscriber in the Kansas City area, you should probably be getting excited, as Sprint's 4G LTE network went live in portions of that market early yesterday. Sprint has confirmed this with S4GRU, and has stated more markets around the greater Kansas City area will continue to light up until that region's rollout is complete. Additional markets, as we know, are scheduled to go online on the 15th, though based on what we're seeing here, that could be an "at the latest" sort of date.
