Android 2.2 FroYo Ported To Motorola Milestone (Build FRF91) By dext3r

ModMyMobile forum member dext3r has released a Milestone update image containing Android 2.2 FRF91, known as MotoFrenzy. Because of the Milestone’s still-locked status, it has been notoriously difficult to port updated versions of Android to. This should help to assuage fears that the Milestone was forever doomed to run Android 2.1.

The only major issue with this image is a non-functional camera, which shouldn’t be too much for Milestone users to give up for a little FroYo.

LG Ally Update On Verizon Brings Numerous Improvements, But No Froyo

Although no one expected the LG Ally to be the next phone to receive a push to Android 2.2, the announcement of an Ally update really got our hopes up. Still, it’s better than nothing. So, what changes does this update bring Ally users? Check them out below, straight from Verizon’s support page:

HTC Incredible Receives Some Froyo Love With Sense Via Sky Raider ROM Beta 1.0

While its author openly claims the ROM is far from perfect, most Incredible owners would probably be happy to give this new ROM, codenamed Sky Raider, a whirl simply to see what Froyo+Sense feel like on their rare, practically extinct, phones.

While have not yet tested Sky Raider ourselves, the installation should be familiar to most rooted Incredible owners who have flashed a ROM before.

Note: this ROM appears to require a full wipe (system/user data or “factory” reset).

Google Android 2.2 Froyo Web Browser Versus Apple iOS4 Mobile Safari In JavaScript Benchmarks: No Contest

It’s rather surprising this comparison took such a long time to take place, but nonetheless, ArsTechnica published the image below comparing the performance of Android 2.2’s web browser against iOS4’s mobile Safari in two respected JavaScript benchmarks.

SunSpider

The SunSpider JavaScript benchmark measures the amount of time a certain number of various JavaScript operations take to complete. A lower score means the operations completed more quickly, and the Nexus One running Froyo beats the iPhone 4 in this regard by a sizeable ~50%.

V8

The V8 benchmark (an open source benchmark maintained by Google) tests the robustness of a phone’s ability to move through rigorous JavaScript actions found on many modern, complex web pages.

HTC Profits Exceed Expectations; Over 20 Million HTC Phones Expected To Ship Worldwide This Year

According to the Wall Street Journal, HTC beat estimates in its Q2 2010 earnings report; with net profits coming in at $268 million for the first half of the year, a 33% increase over 2009. The reason? Probably the fact that HTC is on track to ship over 20 million phones in 2010, a 66% increase over the 12 million they sold last year.

While at first glance these numbers hold little meaning, their implications could be significant. The fastest-growing portion of HTC’s phone lineup is undoubtedly smart phones running Android. As Google continues to develop Android into what it hopes will become the world’s premier mobile operating system, companies like HTC only stand to benefit.

CyanogenMod 6 Alpha For HTC Hero Now Supports CDMA (Sprint) Devices

Lox of the CyanogenMod developer team that unveiled an alpha release of CyanogenMod 6 for the HTC Hero GSM has now added support for CDMA (Sprint) HTC Hero devices.

- First time flashing CM to your Hero (or coming from another ROM)?
1. Unlock your device and install Amon_RA's recovery image
2. Do a Nandroid backup!
3. Update your radio if necessary

CyanogenMod 6 Hands-On: First Impressions

Yesterday, we broke the news that CyanogenMod 6 Alpha 1 was released to the public. Having successfully installed it on an AT&T Nexus One, we can now give you the lowdown on what this release (so far) contains.

User Interface

Essentially, users can expect an experience that will not stray too far from what CyanogenMod 5.08 changed in terms of the UI. An updated version of ADW Launcher does provide a few enhancements, though. Namely, tilt-sensing home screens are now a default feature.

This is good news for everyone. Given that most touch screen phones are easier to type on and hold with two hands in the landscape format, home screens to match are a welcome addition to the overall experience.

CyanogenMod 6 To Bring Froyo To Nexus One, Droid, Dream/Sapphire, Slide, Desire, Incredible, and EVO 4G - Experimental Builds For N1 and Droid This Weekend

Cyanogen of CyanogenMod posted an update to his website earlier this evening on that status of and potential timeline for CyanogenMod 6. Key points below:

Will support Nexus One and Droid first, Dream/Sapphire shortly thereafter, and Slide a little later
Desire, Incredible, and EVO 4G will all be supported eventually (read: No ETA)
First experimental build expected to be available this weekend
Small incremental update to CyanogenMod 5 will also appear this weekend

This is big news, as CyanogenMod 6, a custom ROM, is based on the Android 2.2 Froyo source code. Its predecessor, CyanogenMod 5, runs on 2.1 eclair.
