Samsung Galaxy A23 5G review: The best display at this price, hands down

Budget phones are getting seriously good

Samsung has a phone for sale at just about every price point. While this has worked out very well for the company so far, it also means that Samsung has to compete with itself almost as much as with other manufacturers. Between the low-cost Samsung Galaxy A13 5G and the mid-range A53, it can be challenging to decide which phone deserves your money. Should you spend additional cash on one of the more powerful Android phones, or opt for a real budget device that might not deliver the performance you need?

At this point we're running out of details to spoil for the new OnePlus 9 series, but OnePlus itself has a long history of hyping up its tech before the full phone reveal. So it is today with a new forum post: this one's explaining some of the new features going into the screen on the OnePlus 9 Pro. In particular, it's boasting of improved refresh rate power management and touch systems.

U.S. carriers have often carried and highlighted Galaxy A-series devices as budget options for their postpaid customers, so if you have vested an interest in this niche selection, you might want to pay attention to some progressive developments about the Galaxy A52 and the A72.

Today, the company revealed a strikingly similar Mi 10i tailored for the Indian market, coming with a 108MP primary camera, a 6.67-inch display, and the Snapdragon 750G.

These high-FPS games are ready for the Galaxy S20's 120Hz screen

The Galaxy S20 has a great selection thanks to its pioneering competitors

The Samsung Galaxy S20 is the first mainstream Android phone to feature an (optional) 120Hz display refresh rate mode, following the Asus ROG Phone II and its fellow gaming devices on the heels. That makes the Galaxy S20's interface extra smooth, but dedicated 120fps content utilizing the new capabilities is still few and far between. The best way to push the display to its limit is by testing some games, and we've got you covered with a selection of more than 200 high frame rate titles we're currently aware of.

Smartphone makers love pushing limits, and over the years we've seen them fight to one-up each other by delivering the biggest and highest-resolution screens, or cameras with the most megapixels. Over the course of the past year or so the latest incarnation of this trend has emerged, with manufacturers launching phones featuring some of the smoothest, highest-frame-rate displays ever. Now Samsung finds itself at the front of this effort, as it launches the Galaxy S20 series with 120Hz displays. What's so great about this tech and why should you care? Let's take a look.

More Galaxy S20 details have leaked out today, including basic specs, screen details like 120Hz support (with limits), and even a short hands-on video. XDA's Max Weinbach has just published yet another treasure trove of leaks for Samsung's upcoming phones, joining those from the previous few days as he continues his quest to reveal everything about the Galaxy S20.

Those who have come into contact with super-fast refresh rate displays have hyped them to be a big-time ruiner for anyone going back to 60Hz or less. Razer brought a 120Hz experience to mobile with its phones and while their viability has been in question, you'd probably still be interested in giving the Razer Phone 2 a try. Lucky for you, the company's dropping this ol' reliable down to its lowest price yet.Alright, yes, a Razer Phone 3 might not be happening (at least this year...) and that doesn't exactly instill confidence about the software support timeline. But remember that the phone itself is barely a year old, has some good cooling stacked on top of its Snapdragon 845, and has a respectable LED glow-up config. Oh yeah, and that 120Hz display. Fun stuff to play around with.

ASUS announced the ROG Phone II earlier this year, and it is truly a beast of a smartphone, featuring up to 1TB of storage, a Snapdragon 855 Plus, 12GB of RAM, and a 120Hz display. With the September launch date inching closer, the company is sharing which games will support the high-refresh-rate screen, plus a couple more that barely surpass 60fps.

After Apple made a splash with the iPad Pro's 120Hz display in 2017, Android manufacturers started to follow suit. To date, only a handful of companies has released phones with 120Hz screen technology: Razer, Asus, and Sharp. Although nothing is official, we can tentatively induct Xiaomi into the club thanks to references to a 120Hz display setting discovered in a beta build of MIUI 11.

It would appear that mobile games with high refresh rates are becoming more and more popular now that there's a slew of Android devices out there that support 90-120fps. For the uninitiated, the higher the refresh rate for a game, the better it looks in action, which is why gamers are often concerned with refresh rates. Of course, it's difficult to keep track of the many phones that support high framerates, so in this roundup, I'll first go into the devices available and which ones stand above the crowd. Then I'll list out some of the standout games that support high frame rates, and after that, you'll find a full list of supported Android games. Essentially this is a roundup of everything to do with the games and devices that support high refresh rates, compiled by yours truly.

Phones with high refresh rate displays (90Hz, 120Hz, etc.) are still relatively uncommon, but phone makers have been working with developers to make sure the screens are taken full advantage of in popular games. Pokémon Go is one title that works at high refresh rates, enabling silky-smooth gameplay... until now, anyway.

In the gaming world, displays with higher refresh rates are coveted. Last year's ASUS ROG Phone came with a 90Hz display, so we're not all that surprised to see confirmation that the ROG Phone 2 will have a 120Hz unit. This beats out the OnePlus 7 Pro's 90Hz and matches the Razer Phone 2's rate.

Today Razer has announced its new Android device: the aptly named Razer Phone. It has the world's first 120Hz "Ultramotion" display, the first use of Qualcomm's QuickCharge 4+, and a great set of specs like 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage (further expandable via microSD), and a 4,000 mAh battery. It will cost $699 and pre-orders will be live as soon as today, with general availability for North America and Europe on November 17th.
