grand s

It seems like every month we get a new world's thinnest smartphone, but Chinese manufacturer ZTE knows that's a mug's game. They've decided to go for broke with the Grand S, which sports a 5-inch 1080p screen (like all the cool kids do) and still manages to fit into a case that's just 6.9mm thin at the thickest point. For what it's worth, that makes the Grand S the thinnest 5-inch, 1080p phone out there.

For better or worse, five inches seems to be the new target for flagship Android devices. Huawei is bringing its game to CES (unlike most manufacturers that are holding back for Mobile World Congress) with the Ascend D2, a new Jelly Bean 4.1 device sporting a 5-inch 1080p LCD panel and the in-house K3V2 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU. Other highlights include a 13MP camera (narrowly beating out Alcatel's One Touch Idol Ultra) and respectable 9.9mm waist.

Android 4.2 is out now and it brings a bunch of new goodies. Multiple users on a tablet, photospheres, and gesture typing are all pretty neat. What about this Miracast thing, though? If you're part of the majority of Android users out there, you know that it involves screen sharing and something vaguely to do with WiFi. Well, here. Let's clear some of that up for you.

So, Uh... What Is Miracast?

Greetings from New York! I’m here at HTC’s event checking out the DROID DNA.

The DNA’s claim to fame (besides the ridiculous name) is that it has, literally, the best display ever made for a phone. This thing is packing a 1920x1080 resolution on a five inch screen. That's pixel density of 440ppi! The display is a SuperLCD 3 panel, which makes it a generation better than the previous Best Screen Ever, the HTC One X display.

Ever since the HTC J Butterfly was announced for Japan we've been wondering when that glorious 1080p display would be coming to US soil. We've seen leaks that indicate that the internals would be released here in a much more One X-looking case, and we're sure by this point that it will be called the Droid DNA. Now, everyone's favorite Twitter leakster (tweakster?) evleaks has dropped a press shot on us with the familiar name and promising an "early December" availability.

Remember that HTC phone with the massive, 5" 1080p display that we've been hearing rumors about? Well, it's here! Where "here" means Japan. The Taiwanese manufacturer has just announced the HTC J Butterfly, the follow up to the previous HTC J model. This phone is packing a positively drool-worthy 1080p SLCD 3 display (you read that right) in a 5" slate. In case you were wondering, that is a retina-destroying 440ppi.

According to a new report from DigiTimes (hang on!) this morning, HTC is preparing a new monster flagship phone for launch this fall. The Taiwanese publication says the device will come with a 5" display and a resolution of 1794x1080. If that number sounds a little off to you, it's because those dimensions probably exclude 126 lines to make room for the navigation buttons.

Of course, it's there that the story gets interesting.

Grab your salt-shakers, people, this one's a doozy. According to BGR, their "trusted sources", whom we heard from a while back, have leaked a few extra details regarding the alleged HD screen and quad-core processor. Apparently the rumored quad-core processor will be a Samsung Exynos, clocked to 1.5GHz, tucked underneath an astonishing 4.8" 1080p display.

Not an actual image of the device.

Here's the full list of specs, according to BGR's sources:

  • 1.5GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor
  • 4.8-inch “full HD” 1080p resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio display
  • A 2-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera
  • Ceramic case
  • 4G LTE
  • Android 4.0

While most of these specs sound perfectly reasonable and even expected (a Galaxy S III launching without LTE or ICS would be unacceptable), we're a little skeptical of some of these specs.

We arrived at CES earlier today, and Acer's pre-CES event was the first item on our agenda (yes, on a Sunday). The company unveiled a number of ultrabooks. a new cloud service, and briefly mentioned that it was bringing a brand-new Android tablet to market later this year - so briefly that we didn't even hear the name of the device mentioned (obviously, we later found out what it was called).

Not much was known for a fact about the next crown jewel in the Droid line of Android phones that played a such a crucial part in the growth of the OS in the past 2 years. We had a suspicion that it would have a 4" screen, lose "the lip," and gain a dual-core CPU and a front-facing camera, all while bearing the name Droid 3, but no concrete proof of any of those.
