Sony Announces Xperia X, XA, And X Performance At MWC 2016 (Hands-On)

Here at MWC in Barcelona this morning, Sony announced an all-new series of Xperia devices: the X series. Sorry, folks - no Z6 to be found here. But the X Performance may pique your interest regardless. We had a chance to play with the X and XA (the X Performance was not being shown, just dummy units), so let's talk specs and first thoughts.

The XA is the entry-level X.

The Xperia XA sits at the bottom of the X heap, with a MediaTek MT6755 processor, 2GB of RAM, 5" 720p display, 13MP/8MP cameras, 16GB of storage, and a 2300mAh battery.

[Update: Blade V7 Lite Too] ZTE Reveals The Blade V7, A Mishmash Of Decent Hardware, Mixed Styling, And Android 6.0

ZTE doesn't want to talk about the Blade V7 phone they have on the slate for Mobile World Congress, at least not yet. A promotional website has a small image and a broken link, but if you put in the URL manually, you can see the newly-announced device in all its golden mid-range glory. The V7 kind of looks like the bastard child of an iPhone and one of HTC's later One devices (sorry, ZTE, but that circle home button and custom icon theme are pretty telling), but it's none the worse for being born out of wedlock. It's hard to go wrong with an all-aluminum body, right?

Video: Quick Look At The Samsung Galaxy S7 And S7 Edge (MWC 2016)

Earlier this evening in Barcelona, we had our first chance to look at the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge in the flesh. Unfortunately, it wasn't under ideal conditions, and I don't feel comfortable putting down a large number of thoughts about the devices just yet. We need some more time with them. But, we did manage to record a video demonstrating the phones, as well as snap a gallery of photos for your perusal, should you be so interested. We'll have a full hands-on of the S7 and S7 edge later this week, but for now, here's our first look at Samsung's new flagship duo.

Video: Quick Look At The World's First Thermal Camera Smartphone, The CAT S60 (MWC 2016)

A thermal camera smartphone may not sound like the most useful thing to you in the world, but there's little doubt a niche market for such a thing probably exists, not to mention the undeniable cool factor. And by cool, I mean hot. As in heat. Temperature jokes. The CAT S60 (our announcement post here) features the same thermal imaging sensor found in FLIR's FLIR One dongles for Android and iOS devices, and that's a damn good system - we reviewed it.

By slapping it inside a smartphone, FLIR has eliminated one of the major complaints about the device.

HTC Brings The Formerly China-Exclusive One X9 To North Asia, Europe, The Middle East, And Africa

Two months ago (after no small amount of leaking) HTC announced the One X9, a variant phone with elements of its One line, exclusively for the vast Chinese market. Today in Barcelona the company has announced that it will expand the availability of said phone, bringing it to "North Asia" and the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) zone later this month. Specific countries and prices haven't been released, but in China it launched for 2399 yuan, about $370 USD.

HTC Unveils The Dazzling, Mid-Range Desire 530, 630, And 825

HTC is taking a different approach to this year's mid-range Desire phones. They're decidedly less modest.

With the new Desire 530, 630, and 825 phones unveiled at Mobile World Congress, HTC is deploying what it calls a micro splash design. We call the look sparkly. HTC says the look comes from the use of spray nozzles using different settings of pressure and paint viscosity. It's the design @evleaks leaked earlier today.

The provided press image was spot on. All three of these devices are polycarbonate with rear cameras in the upper corner, zigzagging speaker grills, and holes in the back for a phone lanyard.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Dialer Will Include Caller ID And Search Powered By Whitepages

You probably can't remember the last time you picked up a printed copy of a phonebook from Whitepages. The company still exists, though, and its database of phone numbers will be built into the new Samsung Galaxy S7. Even if you don't have a phone number in your contacts, the GS7 might be able to tell you who's on the other end before you pick up thanks to this feature.

AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, And Other Carriers Announce Galaxy S7 And S7 Edge Availability

It's that time of the announcement cycle: as everyone fawns over Samsung's newest toys, carriers are tripping over themselves to tell you when you can buy them. The "big five" US carriers have all confirmed their support for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, to greater or lesser degrees, which are expected to land in various markets sometime in March. Let's break it down, shall we?

AT&T says it's happy to take your pre-orders for the new phones starting on February 23rd, and they'll be available in retail stores on March 11th. They'd also like you to know that in addition to official Death Star service, they integrate well with DirecTV.
