If you're a Republic Wireless customer, then you probably already know an OTA update started rolling out yesterday to the company's Motorola Defy XT (which also happens to break root – you can remedy that problem here). As a result of the update, Republic Wireless has also released an app into the Play Store that improves the reception on the DXT by adding a few enhancements to the way it manages calls and network connectivity.

  1. Devicescape - In July of last year, we announced a partnership with Devicescape to take advantage of their Wi-Fi access work. It has been a long road getting here, but this is the first fruit of that partnership.

It seems HTC has all but officially decided to drop its practice of unveiling its new handset lineup at MWC this year, scheduling press events mere days before the beginning of the mobile trade show. The company has sent out invitations to events in both New York City and London on February 19th, though it has provided no indication as to exactly what will be unveiled.

However, it seems a given at this point that we'll be seeing HTC's new flagship Android handset, codenamed M7. If HTC's One series announcement last year was any evidence, it's possible some smaller down-market sister devices are going to be in tow, as well.

Just when you thought it couldn't go any lower, Amazon Wireless makes the Droid RAZR HD even more affordable. As long as you're willing to sign on for two years of Verizon service, that is. Amazon reduced the RAZR HD to $49 last week, but Wirefly leapfrogged Amazon to make the device free for upgrades (still $49 for new accounts). Not to be outdone, Amazon has dropped the price all the way to $19.99 on new accounts, and just $0.01 for upgrades.

For anyone due for an upgrade on Verizon, getting this phone essentially for free is a great deal. Of course, $20 for new customers is nothing to sneeze at, and it does beat Wirefly's price.

At 6:00 PM EST today, Republic Wireless will be releasing an OTA update for its single- and dual-band Motorola Defy XT. While the update will bring a slew of enhancements to the device, it also brings a not-so-desirable "fix:"breaking the root exploit uncovered by jcase back in December. That means if you're already rooted, you'll lose root during the update process, and if you haven't yet rooted, the old method will no longer work. Bummer.

However, there's light at the end of the tunnel: jcase has already found a new exploit, rooted the device, and packaged a fully open source one-click apk named Cyanide that will do all the dirty work for you.

Most of the time when we post a good deal – especially on a free phone – it's typically for new customers. In a rare event, though, Wirefly has turned that deal on its head by making  the RAZR HD free for upgrades only. New customers will still have to shell out $50 for the same devices. It's a pretty good deal either way, but it's particularly killer for existing Verizon customers.

We've featured this particular Motorola keyboard in our deals section before, but the price has never dropped quite so low: the 89451N model Bluetooth keyboard is now a paltry twenty bones on NewEgg's store, with the application of promo code EMCXWVS225. It's also got free shipping. If you want to take advantage of this deal, get a move on - it's only valid until January 30th (next Wednesday). Sorry, international readers, this one's US-only.

There are a lot of options in this space, and Motorola's keyboard is generally well-regarded thanks to a slim build and good battery life. It'll work with any Android smartphone or tablet, and though the layout and navigation keys are definitely meant for the everyone's favorite green robot, it'll function on iOS or Windows too.

Yesterday, Verizon welcomed the bright pink Motorola DROID RAZR M into the fold just in time for V-Day. Sure, it's essentially the same device as the existing RAZR M, but c'mon – it's pink! That's a pretty niche color, so I'm sure there are lots of Android fangirls out there who just can't wait to get their hands on this little guy. And now, they can do just that for free at Best Buy Mobile – a $50 savings over Verizon's in-store price. Considering the pink variant hasn't shown up at Amazon Wireless or Wirefly yet, Best Buy seems to be the only place running the deal so far.

It's time to call up the DROID RAZR M family and congratulate it on a new, slightly much girlier addition. Minutes ago, Verizon Wireless put up the bright pink Valentine's Day-themed variant of the 4.3" Jelly Bean-sporting device for sale on its website.

Update: Verizon has now updated the page and included a $50-off discount, dropping the price down to $49.99.

Unsurprisingly, the subsidized 2-year contract price remains unchanged from the black and white versions at $99.99, while the month-to-month off-contract option will make your wallet lighter by $549.99. However, if you can manage to contain the excitement and wait for Internet retailers, like Amazon Wireless or Wirefly, to get one in stock, you'll more than likely be able to save $99.98 - after all, the existing RAZR M listings have it for only a penny (black, white).

Thought $99 was a good deal for one of the top Android phones? Well, grab your wallet because Amazon Wireless is now selling the Droid RAZR HD for just $49.99 if you're a new Verizon customer. Already on Big Red? Don't get too bummed – you can still have the RAZR HD for $99.99. These prices are, of course, with a new 2-year service agreement.

The Droid RAZR HD packs a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, a 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED screen, and a solid 2530mAh battery. It's not anything like the 3300mAh RAZR HD MAXX, but it'll get you through the day.

Buying a smartphone is a lot like telling a joke - timing is everything. Purchasing a Galaxy S III a few months ago was probably fine and dandy, but today, everybody sort of knows we're closing in on the next round of product announcements for 2013.

When do I buy? Which announcement do I wait for? Do I buy as soon as my contract expires, or sit on my upgrade until something new comes along? It's easy to get paralyzed into a sort of gadget anxiety - where you never commit to buying anything, because who knows what could be coming next.
