The newer, more accurate direction indicator in Google Maps is going live for all users

Last month a few Google Maps users started seeing a new display style for the direction indicator, that little arrow that shows which way your device is pointed (or at least which way it thinks it's pointed) on the primary maps and navigation interface. Specifically, it's no longer an arrow: it's a more general "beam" indicator that shows both the approximate direction you're facing and how accurate your device's orientation reporting is. According to the official Google Maps blog, that feature is now rolling out to all users.

Google Drive now has enhanced search with Natural Language Processing

Finding that one important file hidden in a sea of unrelated documents is never fun. Thankfully, Google is seeking to help solve that problem - at least for Google Drive users. Starting today, the Google Drive search bar on the web app can use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to help you find documents. For example, searching "show me presentations from last year" brings up all your documents modified in last year with a presentation file type.

Google claims that this feature will only become more accurate as time goes on, so don't get your hopes up for perfect results quite yet. For example, I have a collection of old operating systems on ISO files, and when I search "iso files," a single JPEG file appears.

[Deal Alert] Best Buy offers the Xperia X for $430 ($120 off) and Xperia X Performance for $585 ($115 off)

The Xperia X line is decent, but considerably behind competitors from Samsung and LG this year, with prices that border on the astronomical for their features. So what happens when you price your flagship phones too high and nobody buys them? Discounts, baby. Best Buy is already offering the mid-range Xperia X and flagship Xperia X Performance for considerably less than retail, and as unlocked GSM phones, too - no carrier shenanigans to be seen.

Google Now is dead: Latest beta of Search app erases references to Google Now

Version 6.5.26 of the beta Google Search app rolled out last night, and while at first the changes seemed minimal, we're seeing one thing this morning that is of particular interest: all references to Google Now have been removed. Google Now cards have been renamed to "Feed," and Now On Tap (as some of you told us) is now referred to as "Screen search." Given Google assistant's forthcoming launch, this isn't exactly surprising.

Samsung Pay updated to v2.3 with iris scanning and cloud sync

Samsung Pay is getting an update today with several new features. Although, one of them will only work if you've got a Note7. 44 new Android Pay banks in the US, plus TSB in the UK

The Android Pay team is seemingly on a roll at the moment, adding many new banks over the past few months, including Chase in the US and Natwest, Santander, and Royal Bank of Scotland (among others) in the UK. Today 44 new US banks are being added, and another big UK bank works as well after being announced as 'coming soon' a week ago.

As far as I can tell, there are no major banks included in this round of additions. We've noted the full list below, so take a look if you're waiting on a particular bank to be added.

Comcast planning to launch wireless service as Verizon MVNO next year

You know how everyone absolutely loves Comcast and never complains about its cable service? Soon, you'll be able to do even more business with Comcast as the company launches an MVNO using a combination Verizon LTE and WiFi. In seriousness, I don't know who in their right mind wants this. Comcast's CEO has confirmed it's happening, though.

The V10 is a massively underrated phone; it excels in a number of arenas where other phones fall flat on their faces. If you're looking for an affordable flagship, the Verizon LG V10 will be waiting for you at Best Buy for a price of $299.99.

WhatsApp adds user mentions for group conversations

One of the features we've been expecting WhatsApp to add is the support for mentions in group conversations. That way, not only you would be able to quote someone or some specific message, you'd also be able to directly address a contact inside a group to get their attention. This feature is now live in the latest WhatsApp beta v2.16.272.

When you're in a group chat, try typing the symbol @ and you'll get a list of all the participants in that chat. You can tap any of them or just type the first letters of anyone's name and it'll narrow down to them.
