Chrome now uses Android O's adaptive icons for home screen shortcuts

As you might know, Chrome for Android allows you to save websites on your home screen for easy access. The first Android O Developer Preview added support for a new 'Adaptive icons' feature, and Chrome now appears to be taking advantage of it for home screen shortcuts.

[Update: O DP2 broke notification channels] Android O feature spotlight: Android tells you if an app is displaying a screen overlay

Being able to run apps that draw on top of other apps is a powerful feature of Android. Apps like Twilight take advantage of that to add a filter to the display, but other apps just show a floating UI element. However, this can also be a security concern. Android O offers a handy alert when an app is showing an overlay with a link to turn it off.

The Cartoon Network app for Android now supports Chromecast

Cartoon Network's latest update to the Android app has finally added Chromecast support. Allegedly this has been one of the most requested features for the application, although I  am not surprised it took so long to be included. Content distributors are pretty picky when it comes to platform availability. At least now my living room TV can become the dedicated Powerpuff Girls streaming machine it always should have been.

[Deal Alert] 2-pack Samsung fast wireless chargers $55 at Woot ($45+ off)

Woot, one of my favorite places for random good deals, is having a special today on Samsung's wireless chargers. You can pick up a pair of the Fast Charge Qi stands for $55. Given that they usually cost about $50 each when new, two for $55 is a pretty solid deal for almost half off. Keep in mind, if you don't need the Fast Charge tech, then you can pick up regular Qi chargers for less elsewhere.

Amazon releases the Android companion app for its fashion-focused Echo Look

We might have previously thought that it was an April Fools' joke, given the timing, but Amazon's Echo Look is quite real. The device, with its camera and fancy machine learning skills, is meant to add some fashion sense to Amazon's personal assistant. It is able to judge contemporary styling between a pair of outfits and even allows you to save your favorites. Today Amazon released the companion app for the Echo Look on Android, so now users of our favorite operating system can see on their phone which headband went better with that Blue Steel look.

ROLI's modular BLOCKS studio has gained popularity recently, as a way to easily create music. Taps and gestures on the BLOCKS turn into musical rhythms when paired to the iOS 'NOISE' app. Now ROLI is making the NOISE app available for Android as well, but it has some limitations.

Android O feature spotlight: The settings search now shows installed apps, results now have subtext

Google added a search function to the Android settings app back in Android 5.0, making it far easier for new users to find exactly what they need. Starting with Android O, the search results not only contain subtext to better explain the results, but apps are now included as well.

[Update: Rolling out widely] Latest Play Store visual tweaks adjust search results and border elements

Google likes to adjust the Play Store more or less continuously, changing things in big or small ways for a small subset of users before rolling things out (or not) to Android at large. The latest updates to the app seem to be appearing for only a few people, presumably via server-side changes. It's nothing particularly huge - you might not even notice them if you're not looking for them - but it's the sort of tweak we live for.

[Update: Nexus 4 is back after a short break] Lineage OS update re-adds Nextbit Robin support, says goodnight to the Nexus 4

Since LineageOS rose from the ashes of the ever popular CyanogenMod custom ROM at the beginning of the year, the community has been hard at work releasing incremental updates on a bi-weekly basis. Each one brings new features and support for more devices. The previous update to LineageOS 14.1 arrived with support for 9 further devices, including the Moto Z Play and Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. The latest changelog includes additional support for just 1 extra device, the Nextbit Robin, which has been re-added. It also announces that the Nexus 4 will no longer be officially supported.

Android O feature spotlight: Downloads of system updates can now be paused

Downloading massive files isn't always convenient, especially if you don't have great Internet. And unless you've still got an unlimited data plan, letting the download continue while you're on the move without WiFi is just a bad idea. Google seems to agree, as Android O's second developer preview now features a 'pause download' button.
