Carriers in the United States are widely known to rip off customers wherever possible, and roaming is perhaps the best example. To help alleviate some of the confusion that customers experience with international roaming, AT&T has announced the 'International Day Pass,' a $10/day fee that allows you to use your domestic plan abroad. After three-and-a-half years in China, Hugo Barra is coming home. That's right: Barra, a former Google VP, is leaving Xiaomi and coming back to Silicon Valley, to '[embark] on a new adventure'.
Barra joined Xiaomi at a time when it was still mostly seen as a newcomer in the global technology business. His leadership, as Global Vice President, has turned the scrappy young upstart into a genuine force to be reckoned with all over the world. Xiaomi now sells phones in multiple countries, including its native China, India, (the company's biggest market), Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and more far-flung countries such as Russia, Mexico, and Poland. Play Store and Android apps access on Chromebooks were announced in May of 2016 and in the time since, they have rolled as developer then stable builds to the Asus Chromebook Flip and Acer Chromebook R11 as well as the Google Chromebook Pixel 2. We know that the functionality will be coming to more of the existing Chromebooks down the line, but we didn't know how it would translate to future Chromebooks. Now Google has made that clear.
In an update to the corresponding Chrome OS support page, Google states that, "All Chromebooks launching in 2017 and after [...] will work with Android apps in the coming future." I don't think any of us are surprised by that, seeing as how the move makes all kinds of sense for everyone, but it's good to see it in writing. Read More
A few days ago, Lineage OS announced that new builds of its custom ROM would be released during the weekend and it has kept its word. On Sunday night, the team started uploading builds for a few devices, picking up where CyanogenMod had left off.
So far, there are builds for the Nexus 6P (angler), Nexus 5X (bullhead), Moto G4 and G4 Plus (athene), Nextbit Robin (ether), and Xiaomi Redmi 1S (armani), but more are coming along. The builds are called lineage, instead of cm, and tagged with the same build number system as CyanogenMod's (14.1 stands for Nougat 7.1 and 13.0 stands for Marshmallow 6.0). Read More
Samsung has finally announced the results of the company's investigation into the Note7 accidents today, and it has come to an interesting conclusion. In addition to its own internal investigation, Samsung brought in safety consulting firms UL, Exponent, and TÜV Rheinland to help determine the root causes.
Samsung and all other firms came to the same conclusion - the problem was with the batteries (not software or the rest of the hardware), and there were two separate issues that caused the incidents. Read More
It's not the first time it's been on sale, and it surely won't be the last, but the Moto 360 Sport is on sale at Amazon today for $99. The watch has its faults, but for just under a hundred bucks, it's one of the best values out there for someone looking for a new AW device.
One important stipulation you need to be aware of is that only the white banded watch is currently on sale. The orange variety will run you $30 more and the black one is not even worth mentioning as it's almost twice as much.
As I type this I'm wearing a beat up Sony SW3 with a torn band, which I have loved for its transflective display that has great outdoor visibility. Read More
HTC's Android Wear watch, codenamed Halfbeak, leaked back in October on Chinese social network Weibo. Since then, we haven't heard a peep from the Taiwanese company regarding the watch. Nevertheless, a bucketload of new photos have popped up, again on Weibo, showing the watch in all its glory. Read More
Sen.se is a relatively new entrant in the connected home and IoT space. The company's most prominent product is the Mother, an oddly shaped humanoid-like hub that connects to small "Cookies" you can intersperse everywhere to monitor motion, temperature, presence/absence. The concept is interesting: Sen.se bills it as a way to keep an eye on different things and people around your home, including how often someone brushes their teeth or when the cookie jar is opened. But the price is on the very exorbitant side of the equation: Sen.se sells the Mother for €242 on its store and it retails for about $200 on Amazon in the US. Read More
CyanogenMod has long been the most popular custom ROM, covering a wide array of devices from numerous manufacturers. But after the breakup of Cyanogen Inc, and the subsequent end of the company's support of CM, LineageOS was formed as a continuation of the project. Now LineageOS is preparing to offer official builds for over eighty devices. Read More
