One of the best parts of LineageOS (and its predecessor, CyanogenMod) is that it can breathe life into older devices. Some phones and tablets can end up with several more years of Android updates thanks to the ROM community. Since we last looked at LineageOS, a whopping 10 more devices have been added, most of which are a few years old at this point. Read More
Google Maps is one of the most feature-packed apps in existence, and fitting everything into easily reachable places is a challenge that requires regular changes. The latest update to v9.62 makes a big move by pulling the layer modes out of the navigation drawer to place them in a new persistent FAB (floating action button) right on top of the map. Amonth many other things, this update also adds a dedicated tab for videos uploaded by the community. On the teardown side, there are signs of some more significant improvements coming for commuters, and much more. Read More
It's common for device makers to tweak the performance of a phone's camera after release, but it usually requires a full software update. However, last year Motorola used an app in the Play Store to make changes to the Moto G4's camera. It looks like the company is taking a similar approach to managing the camera on its upcoming Moto X4. A tuning app for that phone is live right now ahead of the phone's official launch. Read More
I'm willing to bet you have a portable device that has to be recharged occasionally. And when you're away from an outlet for extended periods of time (or your device can't last long without a recharge), portable batteries are a must-have. Anker is one of the best portable battery companies out there, and we're giving away 10 of the company's $109.99 PowerCore+ 26800 PD batteries. Read More
Google kept Motorola's ATAP (Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group) when it sold the company a few years ago, but some high-profile projects like Ara have failed to materialize. Now, the ATAP division is finally bearing fruit. The Project Jacquard touch-sensitive fabric first demoed more than two years ago is coming to market as a collaboration with Levi's. The new Levi's Commuter Trucker Jacket launches this Wednesday for $350. Read More
There are times when Google completely baffles us by adding a feature that we didn't even remotely think could be possible, or needed, or useful. Like now for example, there's a new Search bar when you visit the list of Assistant actions. How groundbreaking!
Whether you check the list by tapping the blue icon on the top right after launching Assistant, or by browsing in the Google Home app, you can see a new search bar on top. That lets you search through all the possible Assistant integrations, from first-party ones like Hue and SmartThings and Honeywell, to third-party services like Alarm.com, Logitech, Roomba, and more trivial things such as Number Genie, Knock Knock Who, and others. A search icon also shows up on the top right when you're browsing different Assistant categories, so it's always easy to look for something specific. Read More
Sony is pulling a Lenovorola with its different Bluetooth headphones. The company confused us recently by announcing the WH-1000XM2 followed by the h.ear on 2 Wireless NC, but you don't need to worry about either of these, because this deal is on the slightly older MDR1000X. They've now dipped to $248 on Amazon, $50 less than the last time we told you about them.
If new headphones make the older generation cheaper, then we won't complain, because the MDR1000X are a really good pair. They're over-ear headphones with active noise cancelation, 20 hours of battery life, hi-res audio both in Bluetooth (LDAC) and wired modes, an ambient mode to hear your surroundings without interrupting your music or removing your headphones, NFC for easy pairing, and a nifty carry case. Picture the scene: you're near your monthly data allowance and you want to check your usage to see what you should turn off to avoid some astronomical overuse charges. We've all been there. But imagine when you get there your settings app decides to give up the ghost, over and over again. That's been the situation for Artem the last couple of days, as you can see from the tweet below.
