Android to iPhone, part two: What I've liked about switching to the iPhone X

I can already tell I’ll have a hard time going back to Android’s software navigation keys.

One of the most pleasantly surprising features of the iPhone X - and something that’s going to read like it’s straight out of Phil Schiller’s marketing playbook - comes in the form of what Apple removed from the phone: the home button. By forcing the issue of gesture navigation instead of going half-in with soft keys, Apple’s made a convert of me. I like gesture nav.

It’s also kind of broken. There’s no universal gesture to go back (some apps let you swipe from the left - sometimes), and the quick switcher button at the top left of the phone requires some serious thumb acrobatics to reach.

Android 8.1 OTA files and factory images are now live

Anxiously waiting for 8.1 to land? It would appear that today is the day. Google has just released both the OTA files for sideloading 8.1 and the requisite factory images. Intrepid Android enthusiasts can flash the update, though it is worth noting that the OTA files aren't currently working when sideloading from DP2 on at least one device.

Google has made public the first release of Android Go—the optimized version of Android for low-end phones targeted toward developing markets, which was announced in May at I/O 2017. Rather than let OEMs stick to outdated Android versions when shipping budget phones, Android Go brings a full, up-to-date experience for devices which ship with 512MB or 1GB RAM.

Capcom's 3DS title 'Monster Hunter Stories' has launched for Android in Japan

Monster Hunter Stories initially launched in the US for the Nintendo 3DS only a few months ago. It exists as a spin-off of the popular mainline action-based series Monster Hunter. The gameplay is entirely different than what you would expect of a conventional Monster Hunter title, as you will be fighting monsters through turn-based combat instead of in real time. For the most part, Monster Hunter Stories was well received when it launched on the 3DS, and I see no reason why the title wouldn't play just as well on Android. Sadly Monster Hunter Stories is only available in Japan as of today.

Netflix is testing a redesigned Android app with a bottom bar UI

The Netflix app on Android has looked the same for a long time, but the company is apparently trying something new. One Reddit user has shared the updated UI that popped up on his phone, which includes a bottom navigation bar. There are some other changes as well, but all the same functionality should be included. If you're looking for an APK download, sorry. This looks like a server-side switch.

HDR video support is coming to Chrome for Android soon

A couple of devices these days support HDR, though not many apps do. YouTube, Netflix, and Google Play Movies are among those apps that can handle HDR playback, and one more may soon be joining them: Chrome. This information comes courtesy of two commits that were recently spotted on Chromium Gerrit.

Two versions of 'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' are officially coming to Android in China [Videos]

I have been biding my time with the recent rumors of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds coming to Android to ensure that it will indeed exist as an official release. After spending some time digging through a few Chinese sites, it does look as though the rumors are legit. As of yesterday Tencent and TIMI Studio Group released an official webpage complete with a trailer for their upcoming game. If that wasn't enough good news, there is a second web page from Tencent that popped up for a different PUBG mobile game developed by Lightspeed & Quantum Studio. While it is still unknown if these games will ever come to the West, it is pretty interesting to see that there will be two official PUBG adaptations coming to Android in the near future.
