Problems Updating System Apps With CyanogenMod 6 On Your Nexus One? Download The App Update Pack

It turns out that some Nexus One owners running CyanogenMod 6 (CM6) have been experiencing issues when trying to update a handful of system apps. As such, XDA-Devs forum member unforgiven512 has thrown the updates into a tidy package. The updated apps are:

  • Amazon MP3
  • Google Maps
  • Google Search
  • Google Voice
  • ROM Manager
  • Street View
  • Superuser
  • TalkBack
  • Twitter
  • Voice Search
  • Not only does this fix the app updating bug, but it moves the app info from the "data" partition to the "system" partition.

Rumor: HTC To Launch Tegra 2 Powered Android Tablet In Early 2011

Take this one with a huge grain of salt: DigiTimes is reporting, yet again, that HTC is about to enter the tablet market by leveraging their expertise with Android and their relations with carriers around the world. The rumours point to a  launch date in early 2011 and specs that certainly look good, but would you pay the rumoured price of $790 for it?

    The claimed specs:

    • 1280×720 display (from earlier reports, that may point towards Gingerbread)
    • nVidia Tegra 2 SoC
    • 32 GB SSD
    • 2 GB RAM
    • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS
    • Full Android Market
    • Support for Chrome Web Apps

That Tegra 2 chipset should provide enough power to surpass the iPad and make for a very fluid experience.

Total Equipment Coverage/Insurance For Verizon Customers Now Includes Free Mobile Recovery Software

Good news for those of you with Verizon phones and a 'Total Equipment Coverage' insurance plan. VZW have just let us know that they are partnering with Asurion to provide some useful security functions for Android owners. The free Mobile Recovery application includes the ability to remotely:

    • Sound an alarm on the phone, even when on silent
    • Locate the phone using GPS, with maps and directions to the handset
    • Lock or wipe the phone, if it is irretrievable

Sounds pretty great for a free service (if you have the qualifying insurance, obviously), and may help to soothe any envious pangs you felt following the demonstration of HTCSense.com’s new security features.

    Editorial: Let Android Be Android

    Introduction

I've had this article in mind for quite some time now, but haven't mustered up the courage to do it in fear of upsetting fanboys. But when the Fascinate shipped with Bing rather than Google as the default search engine, I could hold off no longer. For a Google Android phone to ship with a search engine other than Google, the search engine I know, love, and use on a daily basis (and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone here) is unthinkable; not offering a way to change it is even more of an outrage.

Amazing Ingenuity: TAT's "Horizon" Concept Blends 2D With 3D In Maps And Contacts [Must-See Videos]

Even with Street View, it can be hard to orient yourself in a strange area with a smartphone-based map. The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), an absolutely genius group of UI designers, wants to jazz things up by letting users shift dynamically from a flat object, like a map or a list of contacts, to a 3D one, which can be overlaid with additional information.

    Horizon 2D-3D Maps

By allowing the user to seamlessly transition from a two-dimensional display to a three-dimensional one and back, TAT aims to make it easier to comfortably maintain a sense of space and orientation.

CyanogenMod 6.0.0 Final/Stable For HTC Hero CDMA Released

CyanogenMod 6 is one of the most popular Android custom ROMs, and for a good reason - besides supporting a myriad of devices, it is built from AOSP (Android Open Source Project), which means no extra garbage that normally comes installed by carriers and customizations/improvements for the people, by the people (the CM contributor community is huge).

Sprint has abandoned our beloved HTC Hero (it was my first Android device a bit under a year ago now and holds a special place in my heart) but the Android community hasn't.

Droid 2 World Edition To Make Droid 2 Obsolete? Already?

The world of smartphones moves fast. How fast, you ask? So fast that a device that is just days over being a month old is already apparently getting phased out. The Motorola Droid 2 was just released in August but it's possible that this Droid lived fast and will die young.

    showimage.php

You'll notice that underneath the words "Droid 2 by Motorola" it states "while supplies last," indicating that there are a finite number left.
