Your Smartphone Is Lying To You (And It’s Not Such A Bad Thing)

Climbing out of bed, about to start your day, you unplug your new smartphone from its wall charger and quickly check your email. You’ve left it plugged in overnight, and the battery gauge shows 100%.

CM6

After spending over a month in the release candidate stages, a final (stable) release of Android's most popular ROM has just been pushed out. Cyanogen himself tweeted the news, but also mentioned one small caveat: Samsung devices (read: the Galaxy S line) are left out of the fun, with no ETA. (Update: not available for the HTC Wildfire either.)

As expected, today Verizon Wireless officially unveiled its plans to light up more than 1/3 of America with the next generation 4G LTE network. The switch will be flipped this Sunday, December 5th, but since VZW doesn't have any LTE-enabled mobile phones just yet, the only way to get a taste of the new network will be using one of the two USB modems VZW will be offering: the LG VL600 or the Pantech UML290.

If you thought Amazon's recent deals on all AT&T Android phones and all Verizon Droids were good, just wait 'til you see what they've got in store for the holidays. Amazon Wireless' Black Friday deals are now up, though without a definitive end date - instead, the deals will be available while supplies last. Of course, it goes without saying that Amazon Wireless does not charge tax in most states (except for KY, KS, NY, ND, and WA) and has free shipping, beating out carriers' own retail stores any day.

Introduction

And with that, we solidly conclude that Android truly has visited 99% of the mobile form factors out there. That's right, people, the Motorola Droid Pro has arrived in the Android Police offices, and after spending the last week or so with it, I can tell you - with a straight face, nonetheless - that RIM's got serious competition here. The handset isn't exactly all that and a piece of cake, but it's definitely up there, at least for enterprise customers.

We all knew it was coming - Full Tilt Poker Rush Mobile, the first real money poker game on Android, has finally hit the Android Market, and is available for devices running Froyo, due to the Flash 10.1 requirement. The app still bears a beta sticker, so be careful with those hard earned greens of yours. Obviously, it goes without saying that you should also find a stable connection, preferably WiFi, unless you want to fold every hand you get disconnected from.

Amazon Wireless, Amazon's mobile arm, launched a big sale on all AT&T Android phones today in a weekend promotion that could easily rival even the upcoming Black Friday deals (BF is happening on Nov 25th). All of the AT&T Android phones Amazon Wireless carries are temporarily exactly 1 penny:

  • Motorola Backflip
  • Motorola Bravo
  • Motorola Flipout
  • Motorola Flipside
  • Sony Xperia X10
  • Samsung Captivate

In addition to the above, a few other Android and some Win Phone 7 (if you're into that sort of thing) phones are also bearing the sweet sticker price of a mere cent:

  • HTC Droid Incredible
  • Motorola Droid 2
  • Motorola Citrus
  • HTC Surround (Win Phone 7)
  • LG Quantum (Win Phone 7)

Get them while they're hot out of the oven - the promotion ends November 15th.

Hot in the heels of the incredible $100 Amazon deal on Sprint's flagship EVO 4G, we found ourselves looking at the same price tag on an even more expensive and more recent 4G device - the Samsung Epic 4G. Retailing for $249.99 at Sprint, the best deal we've seen on an Epic so far was $200 at both Amazon and Wirefly.

What we're looking at today is a brand new Epic 4G for $99.99 on a new 2-year contract, with free 2-day shipping and no tax.

There are times when it pays to be an Android user, literally. Poker enthusiast website PokerTwitch received word that Full Tilt's Rush Poker will soon be coming to some lucky Froyo-running Android phones. This appears to be the first genuine real-money poker game for Android and trumps the offerings in Apple's strict App store whose policies do not permit gambling for real currency. There are online solutions available but none so convenient as a native application.

Update: As several commenters have pointed out, Android does support some right-to-left languages like Arabic out of the box, it just doesn't do so correctly. The method described below does.

Surprising as it may be that Android, which is now a major player in the mobile operating system game, does not ship with support for any right-to-left languages such as Arabic, Persian, or Urdu, there's no denying it; languages were never one of Android's strengths.
