Kenwood-Thumb

Seeing which manufacturers will bake Android Auto into their latest models is cool and all, but I'm looking to see which third-party options start appearing on store shelves. After all, I bought my vehicle in 2013, and I'm not looking to replace it in the next couple of years. Fortunately Kenwood has come to CES with one that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the DDX9902S.

Out of the box, Kenwood's unit has a tacky interface that perhaps only a car enthusiast could love.

Hey, look at this Mad Catz Android Bluetooth controller. It looks really compact, if a little odd. But then that's Mad Catz for you.

I wonder what happens if I pull this thing and - oh, a full-sized console controller. That's kinda neat, even if the extended handles do look a little too much like scissor blades. What happens if I put this little plastic bracket on...

Sprint is rolling out an over-the-air update to customers who own a Galaxy Note II that applies a security patch or two from Google. What vulnerability this update addresses isn't detailed, but it's the first OTA Sprint has sent out since the big KitKat update last May.

Once the goods arrive, they will leave your Note II running software version L900VPUCNK2. There's nothing else on the changelog, so don't go digging around looking for anything exciting.

Altec Lansing has announced a meaningful update to last year's Life Jacket speaker, which was pretty cool in its own right. This year's version is called the BoomJacket, which boasts double the battery life of its predecessor along with increased connectivity range. It can also be used as a portable charger for your other devices, though we don't have any specs on that just yet.

Take a look at some of the stuff Altec Lansing did to the Life Jacket, which is now the older model.

Blu isn't a company that's typically known for pushing out the highest-end flagship devices, but rather a solid company offering unlocked budget handsets. It's always releasing new handsets, giving potential customers a lot to choose from. At CES this year, the company took wraps off of seven new handsets (to be fair, a couple of those are from the same line), none of which cost more than $199 off-contract. Powerhouses? Probably not.

Yale makes a lot of fancy door locks, and it has announced a new one at CES—the first NFC-enabled residential door lock in the US. The Yale Real Living NFC Deadbolt doesn't even have a regular keyhole. You can unlock with either your phone or a code entered on the capacitive keypad.

Time waits for no man, and Samsung is similarly inclined - it's not letting a little thing like the biggest technology conference in the world stop it from announcing phones for markets on the other side of the planet. Thus we have the Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7, a mid-range, photo-focused take on Samsung's formula and its plus-sized and slightly higher-end brother, respectively. Both of them should be coming to India sometime in the near future.

Certain 2015 Volkswagen cars with come equipped with Android Auto and CarPlay (Apple) support starting later this year. The option will be available in any models that come with MiB II, the second generation of the manufacturer's "modular infotainment platform," though the Golf is the only vehicle explicitly mentioned in the announcement. MirrorLink support will also come included.

Manufacturers at this year's CES know consumers turn to smartphones as their primary cameras, and they want in on the action. Whether it's a traditional Android player releasing a handset with optical zoom (the Zenfone Zoom), a point-and-shoot that's catered towards the generation that grew up with social networks and touchscreen devices (the Socialmatic), or devices that improve your selfies (ridiculous-looking accessory included), various companies all want to be the one you turn to for capturing life's moments.

More details have started pouring in regarding the newly announced LG G Flex 2's availability. Yesterday, Sprint, AT&T, and U.S Cellular confirmed that they would be carrying the phone, with Sprint getting the "Volcano Red" color exclusive. But if you live on the other side of the pond and you're itching to get that curvy bendy phone in your hands, you should know that it will be a Vodafone exclusive for the first 6 weeks of its launch in the UK.
