The first round of security updates for Nougat is ready. It has only been eleven days since the official release of Android 7.0, but keeping with the regular schedule, new factory images and full system OTAs are now available for installation. There are also Marshmallow-based images with the latest security updates for many devices, including the Nexus 5, which will no longer officially receive major version updates. Read More

Amazon's hardware ventures weren't all quite popular (remember the Fire Phone?!), but beside the Kindles and Fire tablets, and obviously the Echo, the Fire TV is easily counted one of the company's success stories. It has become one of the best streaming and gaming solutions, battling Roku, Apple TV, and Android TV for a spot on every TV's HDMI port.
That's also thanks to continuous updates and improvements from Amazon who keeps adding features to its products. In the latest update to the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick rolling out now (or very soon), Amazon is adding more apps and channels to Universal Search so you have fewer and fewer reasons to open apps individually to do a search in them. Subtlety isn't the strong suit of T-Mobile's CEO and his press announcements, but this new release comes to us courtesy of the company's CTO, Neville Ray, who seems to be taking on the same blunt approach of the famous Legere.
T-Mobile, through Ray, announced new network technologies to improve the speeds of its network: 4x4MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) which doubles the number of data paths between your phone and the cell network, and 256QAM/64QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) for faster bits transfers during downloads and uploads, respectively. 4x4MIMO is already available in 319 cities while 256QAM/64QAM is live in half T-Mo's network and will be on every network cell by the end of October. Meizu has just revealed their newest device to the world, entitled the Meizu M3 Max. It's called 'Max' for a reason, the phone is rocking a 6" 1080p screen, placing it firmly into phablet territory. Meizu says they chose that size to make multi-window functionality and media consumption more usable, which is a very valid point.
The M3 Max is rocking a 4,100mAh battery to power that massive screen, much more than the capacity of recent flagship devices such as the Moto Z (2600mAh) and Galaxy Note 7 (3500mAh). The phone also features a fingerprint sensor up front, capable of storing up to five fingerprints for authentication. Read More
In a blog post today, Intel announced its planned acquisition of Movidius, a "vision" chip manufacturer that focuses on low-power hardware and algorithms to give machines sight. Having seen a market for its technology at its founding, Movidius set out to develop its own processing architecture to tackle large workloads and image processing while keeping expenditure low. This eventually became the company's Vision Processing Units (VPU), which allow for tracking, navigation, and mapping all while sipping at power. Because of the success in its endeavors, the company was able to partner with some big names in the tech space, including Google and its Project Tango. Read More

Huawei’s budget sub-brand Honor is the subject of increasing chatter in phone geek circles of late. In January, the Honor 5X introduced the “company” (insofar as they operate as a separate business unit) to a Western audience with a very affordable, metal-bodied phone.
The device, though, seemed to land on deaf ears, at least among enthusiasts. I can’t speak to how the Honor 5X did in US sales channels, but initial launch buzz quickly wore off once reviews went to press, and the phone itself really was pretty mediocre in retrospect. Its dazzle, its allure really came from looking the part of a $300-400 phone while costing much less. Read More

Android Police coverage: [Update] Taskbar lets you enable Freeform mode on Android Nougat without root or adb
Android Nougat has a bunch of new features, but not all of them are visible on the surface. Freeform mode, a simple windowing system that allows apps to behave like they're on, well, Windows, is hiding deep in its code. Read More
