Google: No Factory Image Or Proprietary Binary Hosting For Google Play Edition One Or S4, OEMs Will Handle OTAs

There's been a lot of speculation about just how Nexus-like the Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition phones will be, particularly from a technical / software update standpoint. Now, we have some relatively concrete information that sheds light on these issues.

First and foremost, Google will not directly handle software updates for Google Play edition devices. This has been reported as true, false, and generally disputed quite a lot in the lead-up to the launch.

Three Weeks With The Nokia Lumia 928, An In-Depth Look From An Android Perspective

After a two week stint with the BlackBerry Z10 last month, I happened upon another chance to go across the platform border, this time into the Windows world - with the Nokia Lumia 928.

Microsoft and mobile have had a tumultuous, off-again on-again relationship. However, there is little doubt that MS's smartphone success peaked with Windows Mobile 6, and then very, very rapidly fell off as iOS and Android rolled onto the scene.

Verizon's Casio G'zOne Commando LTE Is Official, Ready To Take A Beating On Thursday, June 27th For $100 On Contract

If you habitually rock climb, scuba dive, ski cross-country, or do any of the things you might regularly see on a heath food or Viagra commercial, you're probably in the market for a ruggedized smartphone. And if you're on Verizon, your options have been somewhat limited as of late (try not to drool over AT&T's shiny new Galaxy S4 Active, please). Verizon just made the Casio G'zOne Commando LTE official: it's a super-sturdy Android device in the same vein as the former Commando and the G-Shock watch line.

[Au-ful] Have $2436 Lying Around? This Totally Tasteful HTC One Is Plated In 24 Carats Of Gold

The HTC One is a beautiful device. At a time when most Android phones are made of plastic, HTC betted on aluminum for its flagship device. The handset just exudes style and class, but there is something it's missing. It screams premium, but it doesn't quite say ... elite. If only it were made of gold. Now that would be a quality device. While we can't expect HTC of all companies to have the visionary mindset necessary to deliver such a product, the fine folks over at Goldgenie understand class.

AT&T Offering 50% Off All Smartphones For A Limited Time, Includes S4, S4 Active, One, And Many Others

If you're in the market for a new phone on AT&T, the time to buy is now. The company is running a promotion that knocks 50 percent off of all smartphones – including top-tier handsets like the Galaxy S4/Active or HTC One. To make this deal even more enticing, all activation fees are also getting waived through the end of the month. That's a hell of a deal.

Here's how it works: you select the device you want, add it to the cart, and go through the normal motions of selecting your plan (or upgrading your line if you're already an AT&T customer).

[New App] Where'd Ya Get Those Peepers? EyeVerify Eyeprint Beta Scans Veins In Your Eye To Unlock Apps

Most people make do with a PIN or pattern lock to secure their Android devices. If you need something a little stronger (or just want to feel like Ethan Hunt) EyeVerify has just released the beta version of an app that uses honest-to-goodness eye scans. Eyeprint takes a photo of your face, then matches the pattern of blood vessels on your eyeballs to a previous photo to access locked apps. The beta is extremely limited - none of my devices are showing compatible on the Play Store.

AT&T's QWERTY-Packing NEC Terrain Now Available: $100 On-Contract, $430 Outright

NEC's first entry into the American Android market isn't exactly auspicious, but it does fill a much-neglected niche. AT&T is now offering the NEC Terrain for sale, right on time and online only. $99.99 on contract gets you the QWERY candybar phone with a miniscule 3.1" screen, or you can shell out $429.99 to own it outright. Considering its ruggedized, semi-waterproof build, that's not such a bad deal... but you will have to live with Ice Cream Sandwich, a year after Jelly Bean 4.1 was released.
