Instagram Direct takes a page from Snapchat with disappearing photos and videos

Instagram Direct was added a while back to allow you to have conversations with other Instagram users in a more private setting. Now, Instagram is adding some features you're probably familiar with from Snapchat—you can send images and videos that self-destruct after being viewed. Regular photos can still be sent as well, though.

Play Movies & TV v3.24 prepares to feature HDR content, tweaks some layouts [APK Teardown + Download]

If you've purchased a new television in the last couple of years, it might be equipped with a feature called HDR, or High Dynamic Range. We won't get mired in the details, but let's just say it has a pretty noticeable impact on image quality, particularly in very dark or bright scenes. However, this doesn't do much good if the video you have to watch isn't properly encoded. The latest update to Play Movies & TV shows Google hasn't forgotten this fact, and preparations are being made to feature movies and TV shows delivered in HDR.

First is the Ultra 256GB MicroSDXC UHS-I card with adapter. While this isn't the new fancy U3 card, it's still plenty fast with transfer speeds up to 95MB/s. Last we saw it, it was down from $200 to $135 on Amazon, but it had once reached $120 at B&H in limited quantities. Now it's back again at that same price of $119.99 on Amazon, which is its cheapest at the retailer according to CamelCamelCamel.

Google is testing screenshot cropping and drawing tools in its search app

Google has been tinkering with screenshots for a few months. First, some hidden code was found in Nougat that would trigger partial screenshot functionality, then we started hearing of a screenshot cropping and drawing option showing up inside the Google app. That last bit is starting to show for some users including our reader Nicholas who shared the news on Reddit and further explained how it works.

If you're on the lucky end of this server-side test, when you open the Google app, you'll be greeted with a new permission to access device storage. Google explains that this will be used to improve the handling of screenshots taken "in the app," so you should be ready for disappointment if you expected this to be a system-wide option.

Google TTS was updated to version 3.11 a few days ago, but the changelog was just posted after a minor bump to 3.11.12. It turns out that this one brings support for several new languages including Ukrainian, Czech, Bangla (native to India and Bangladesh), Khmer (aka Cambodian), Nepali, and Sinhala (native to Sri Lanka).

There are also improvements to voices as well as a new option to disable number processing so that numbers can be read as they are. You might want to flip that toggle if the numbers were being read in a way that confuses you.

[Update: Message gone] Google Home app says multiple users are now supported

We've known for a while that multiple user support would come to Google Home. It only makes sense that a device placed in the home can be used by several persons instead of being linked to just one user's data and music and other accounts. But until now, we had only seen the signs of multi-user support in Cody's teardown of the app.

Today though, users have started seeing a new card in the Discover tab of the Google Home app titled "Multiple users now supported." The card says that you and others in your house can enjoy a "personalized experience" from Assistant on the Google Home, but so far the feature doesn't appear to be live just yet.

Google Assistant's new shopping list is live, here's how it works

When Google Assistant was first introduced, you could ask it to add items to your personal shopping list. This would create a note called 'Google Assistant shopping list' in Google Keep, and you could easily manage your list from the Keep app (or web app). It makes sense that your shopping list would be in the same app as your notes, right?

Apparently not to Google, because two days ago, a support article was updated to say the shopping list is moving out of Keep. Why? Because the new list ties into Google Express, so you can order what you need in fewer steps.
