Google Maps v9.37 beta adds personal content settings screen and timeline shortcut, organizes notification settings, and more [APK Teardown + Download]

It's a Friday afternoon and wouldn't you know it, Google set loose an update to the Maps app just in time for the weekend to begin. (Not like some of us didn't have plans...) Like so many recent updates to Maps, this one has some pretty notable changes worth checking out. There's a new settings screen for controlling how your personal content shows up in the app and the notification settings have been organized into sub-groups for easier browsing. A shortcut has been added to get into your timeline quickly, and it looks like level 3 Local Guides can now work with some of the recently added features for making contributions to places nearby.

Samsung is finally working with the CPSC to make the Galaxy Note7 recall official

A week ago, Samsung officially announced a global recall of the Galaxy Note7 as a response to several units that had exploded while charging. People had mixed opinions about how Samsung was handling the recall. Consumer Reports, for instance, criticized Samsung for not handling it through the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which is a government agency that handles official recalls of consumer products. Now, Samsung has voluntarily decided to work with the CPSC on the Note7 recall.

Google+ push notifications now available on Chrome, seems a bit buggy right now

Several major websites have offered push notifications with Chrome (and other supported browsers) for some time, including sites like Facebook and eBay. Today Google+ is now supporting this feature, enabling users to receive notifications even when the site is not open.

Action Launcher officially hits v3.9, includes Nexus Launcher stuff

Anyone who asks me what launcher I use will know how much I love Action Launcher. Not only is the feature set massive, but developer Chris Lacy puts a lot of hard work and love into it.

The beta for v3.9 that released back in August brought with it some features from the rumored Nexus Launcher, including swipe up for "All Apps" and the Google "pill" and date widgets. Today, Action Launcher updates to v3.9 officially. It includes all of the new things from the beta, as well as a few more goodies. See the changelog below for details on those additions.

Samsung will identify fixed battery Note 7s with marking, will establish an IMEI check tool

Samsung has made great efforts to make the Galaxy Note 7 global recall as painless and quick as possible. Earlier today they released information about the replacement Note 7 stock in Australia, revealing that (at least in the land down under) replacement stock will be available September 21. But the second part of the announcement is noteworthy - Samsung has a plan to identify safe Note 7 devices from the original batch.

Samsung reports that users will be able to check their IMEI numbers through an online database starting September 13. This will make it much easier to tell if your Note 7 is affected or not, and with IMEI identifiers being effectively unchangeable, it's practically fool-proof.

Blu Pure XR review: Mostly decent hardware choked by bad software

I have in my hands the Pure XR, Blu's latest flagship. Teased back at the beginning of August, many noted that the phone bore some striking similarities to a few other phones from the front. Despite this, Blu was quick to express its excitement for this new device. Looking at the company's portfolio, notably the last member of the Pure line, the Pure XL, the reason for the fuss is pretty obvious. I have been using it for about a week now and I have a lot of thoughts on it. Foremost is that at the price of $299, this phone packs some good specs into a very nice frame.

[Update: New Top Charts too] Google Play Store testing file sizes for apps on most pages

If you're trying to be conscious about your device's storage space, the Play Store doesn't make it easy. To see an application's total file size, you have to tap on the app's page, tap 'read more' on the description, and scroll all the way to the bottom. That's not incredibly intuitive, but it looks like Google is trying to fix that.

The Google Play Store is testing a server-side change that shows the app file size on almost every screen on the Play Store. The screenshots provided to us show the download size at right side of all application cards at the update screen, My Apps screen, and other locations such as Top Charts.

Fornicating Fruit Fibs: "F*#% Apple" message in Whatsapp is a hoax

You've probably heard the advice to not believe everything you read on the Internet. That wisdom applies to many things, but the most recent example is a silly news story circulating about code supposedly discovered in Whatsapp for Android. According to a post on Reddit, the text "FUCK APPLE" is used heavily throughout the compiled code of Whatsapp. Given the comical and slightly scandalous nature of the story, it spread quickly and few people bothered to question its validity. However, it's totally fake.

Honest companies are expected to retain their users by offering the best service they can provide and not by actively locking them in and making it hard to switch to a competitor.
