The BBC News reader on Android got an update today that should please the pixel poppers among the audience. The app has been optimized to take advantage of Super Mega Ultra dense displays like on the Xperia Z and Droid DNA (to say nothing of the upcoming HTC One and Galaxy S 4). A pile of bugs have been squashed in the new update as well.

Here's the full change log:

What's in this version:

This is a major update of our app, with improved performance and image quality.

Since the dawn of mobile gaming, a handful of genres have struggled with the transition to tiny screens, while still keeping usable controls. Oil Rush is Unigine's attempt at one of the most daunting categories, real-time strategy. The game doesn't come with just another slightly different control scheme, it's equipped with a full storyline, high end graphics, and voice actors! Oh yeah, and a pretty high price tag...

Set during a post-apocalyptic war in which a nuclear weapon has melted the ice caps and flooded Earth, the remaining inhabitants fight to control any last remaining oil reserves.

Sprint is testing a device from ZTE tentatively called the Quantum with model number N8910, Android Police learned recently. The Quantum has mid to high-end specs with its 5" 720p screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, a 13MP camera, NFC, and Sprint's 4G LTE.

The device runs Android 4.1.2, which isn't currently the latest iteration of Android, but in line with most newer devices on the market today outside of the Nexus line and the Galaxy S4.

In my opinion, one of the most appealing things about the Galaxy S III is the sheer amount of accessories made specifically for it. Never before had we seen an Android handset get as much love from all the big players, which is likely one of the things that made it such a popular handset.

Continuing that sort of add-on support, Samsung is coming out swinging with the Galaxy S4, as it has already announced a gaggle of pretty impressive accessories just for the device.

Oh, LG. Sometimes I really do wonder if you come up with the good ideas first, or if it really is like everyone else sort of thinks it is. Korea's #2 smartphone producer just sent out a press release announcing LG Smart Video, a new feature in the Optimus G Pro. So, if you've heard about the Smart Pause feature that was recently discovered in some screenshots from a Galaxy S III Android 4.2 ROM, it's that.

Video editors are pretty commonplace today on Android, though few of them are exactly pretty. And even fewer are as straightforward to use as they should be. Enter WeVideo. WeVideo is actually a web-based video editing and cloud storage service, but they've expanded their reach with an app for Android, now on the Play Store in a limited beta.

You'll have to be using either a Galaxy S III, Note, Note II, Galaxy Nexus, or Nexus 4 in order to use it for the time being, though that's a prerequisite many of you likely meet.

Otterbox is known for making some of the most protective cases on the planet. The Defender Series, one of its most protective, is gearing up for a major upgrade: a built-in battery. Simply called the Defender Series with iON Intelligence, the case should effectively double the battery life of supported smartphones. Right out of the gate, it looks like the company plans on making it available for the iPhone and Galaxy S III, though hopefully cases for other handsets are in the works.

Welcome to the Android Police Podcast, Episode 52. This marks our one-year anniversary and, to celebrate we had a very special drinking game episode. As such, the show may be a bit more adult than usual, but also tons more fun.

Don't forget - the Android Police Podcast's live broadcast is every Thursday at 5PM PST (www.androidpolice.com/podcast). The very unedited video version of the podcast can be found here - and will likely include various verbal expletives, technical snafus, tangents, and probably a good 5-10 minutes of pre-podcast banter as we prepare.
