Android One is having somewhat of a resurgence right now. Xiaomi just released an Android One phone, and Motorola might be working on an A1 version of the Moto X4. Now it looks like HTC will be releasing one too, albeit with a massive bottom bezel.

Microsoft's Engkoo app uses AI to help with English pronunciation [APK Download]

You may think that learning English isn't exactly a priority for the world's most populous country. While many Chinese people probably have little reason to speak English in their daily lives, there are still plenty who want to learn the language, either for business or personal reasons. As Mandarin is so different, pronunciation is particularly difficult to master. That's where Microsoft's new app, Engkoo, comes in.

Allo for web has been updated to include shouting, whispering, and Smart Smiley suggestions

There are a number of good reasons people haven't been that enamored by Allo since Google released it, not least that the company simply has too many messaging apps. One of the biggest issues at launch was the lack of a desktop or web client. How else could we get away with chatting to each other while at work without our boss finding out? That was rectified last month with the introduction of Allo for web, but it still lacked a few features from the app. A couple more of those have just made their way on to the web version.

[Deal Alert] Synology RT1900ac and RT2600ac routers down roughly $30 at several retailers

We love Synology's products here, but this latest deal isn't on the company's famous NAS gear but its lesser known routers. Jordan has already reviewed the RT2600ac, one of Synology's two routers, and came away impressed. He called it a beast thanks to its good range, speed, as well as its user-friendly interface and Android app that lets you control priorities and change settings easily from your phone.

If you were looking for a router (and you're not swayed by the various mesh options), I'd suggest you check out Jordan's review first and then look at these deals. Both the RT2600ac and its older sibling the RT1900ac are being discounted around $30 on Amazon, Newegg, and B&H.

IFTTT adds a channel for TP-Link Kasa smart plugs, switches, and bulbs

IFTTT is continuing its crusade to bridge your different online services and smart home gadgets and appliances together, with the latest addition being TP-Link's Kasa series of smart bulbs, switches, and plugs (which, I might add, are already Google Home-compatible).

The Kasa channel is still marked as "beta" on IFTTT, but there are already plenty of ideas for integrations with motion detectors, smart cams, your phone's location, and so on. For now, the IFTTT channel only offers actions for TP-Link, like turning a Kasa device on, off, toggling its state, changing the color or brightness or color temperature of a bulb, and setting a scene.

[Update: It's working now] Setting reminders from Chrome is broken

There are myriad ways to set reminders tied to your Google account, although Google Home is notably not one of them. But I digress; it looks like Chrome has joined Home in not supporting reminders. Until recently, you could set reminders just by typing them into the desktop Chrome search box. Google seems to have broken this feature, but it's still listed on the support page.

Instagram adds the ability to share stories with friends via Direct

Instagram took to its Tumblr blog of all places to announce that stories can now be shared with your friends via Direct. That's cool... I think. And when the story disappears from the original account, it will also vanish from your inbox. Some magical stuff right there.

Google Home will soon lower volume of videos and music you're casting to devices when you're using Assistant

Google Assistant is the main selling point behind the Google Home, but Assistant can't really help you if there's audio blasting in the background and it can't hear you. To alleviate this, Google Home will now automatically lower the volume of any music or video playing on speakers or TVs that it's casting to when a user is speaking to Assistant.

Opinion: The iPhone X will overshadow the new Pixels, and Google needs a battle plan

Today, Apple announced the iPhone X to the fanfare of hundreds of members of the media, investors, and its own employees at a large event in the company's new purpose-built Steve Jobs Theater, housed within its brand-new mega-campus. Next month, Google will announce the second generation of its Pixel smartphones, alongside a handful of other new products, at what will likely be a comparatively small affair attended almost exclusively by technology journalists. It will probably be in a nice - but decidedly rented - event space in San Francisco.

Apple will ship millions of iPhone Xs before the year is out, assuming supply is not an issue.
