While the dream of all top-tier smartphones supporting wireless charging seems to be fading, there are still a fair number on the market equipped with the feature. It's a sweet way to juice up your phone without the hassle of dealing with wires and plugs.
Tronsmart has just released a new wireless charger called the Chocolate and passed along some coupon codes to share with you. The only truly notable feature about the charger is that it supports the new, faster generation of wireless charging with speeds up to 10W (1.4 times faster than the older generation). Read More
Republic Wireless unleashed a raft of new phones to go along with its new GSM network agreement recently, and now the other shoe drops. In addition to buying a phone from Republic, you can bring your own. It still has to be on the approved list, though. Read More
It is a sad fact of life that interesting, new concepts or ideas find it hard to set the world alight because generally, we humans don't like change. That's the basic message from Larva Labs, the team behind the Flow Home launcher, which has announced that it is discontinuing active development on the app, apart from some minor updates and bug fixes.
The idea behind Flow Home was instead of showing icons, to display the thing inside the icon: pictures, videos, news, tweets, or status updates (among others). It feels a bit like the HTC homescreen feature, BlinkFeed. Sadly, Matt Hall from Larva Labs says that two major things contributed to the decision to kill off the launcher: API shut-down for social networks (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), and lack of people using the app full-time. The Olympics Games aren't the only sports event happening in Rio this summer. About two weeks after the end of the summer Olympics, the Paralympics Games start on September 7 and last until the 18 of the same month. That timeline doesn't fall within the "August" frame for T-Mobile's free unlimited 4G LTE internet in Rio, and so the company is changing its original plans to fix this oversight.
T-mobile had offered not only to provide free and unlimited 4G LTE to its Simple Choice postpaid customers, but also to not count any roaming fees toward their bill, whether they're calling or texting from Rio. That offer was supposed to be valid only during August, but T-Mobile just announced that it's extending it until the closing ceremony of the Paralympics Games on September 18. Read More
LG has just announced that its upcoming V20 (of which renders have just leaked) will feature a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC. For anyone that appreciates sound quality, this is great news. Last year, LG wowed audiophiles with the ESS SABRE 9018 DAC and 9602 Headphone Amplifier it put into the V10. However, audio quality suffered on the G5. It sure didn't help that the Bang & Olufsen "Friends" module pretty much disappeared off the face of the earth.
The company's press release describes a Quad DAC as something that delivers concert-like audio. LG claims that this DAC is better than normal ones in that it can reduce up to 50% of ambient noise levels. Read More
With Google Assistant not that far off, it seems Google is really amping up the changes to Google Now. After the 'Explore Interests' card and autocomplete improvements, plus laying the groundwork for Assistant, the next new thing is a bottom row of tabs, with 'Home' and 'Dashboard' occupying it.
While the Home tab is the expected Google Now homepage, Dashboard is new and therefore interesting. From the tips we've had on this it's pretty clear it's not really working properly yet, but what we can gather is this: it seems to only work with the Nexus Launcher, at least at the moment, and collects data from across the different Google services and pools them all in the tab. According to several tips from Android Police readers, the Google Play Store may not require you to have a Google+ account to write reviews anymore. This news comes hot on the heels of reports that the +1 button is disappearing from the Play Store (which Artem is still devastated about, by the way). In fact, the two situations are very likely related. Read More
Samsung Electronics America has announced that it is in the process of acquiring Dacor, a company famous for its high-end appliances but known to us as the creator of crazy Android ovens.
