Hey, guess what? After about 18 hours as a Release Candidate, Chameleon Launcher for Android tablets is now available in its full v1.0 glory. That's right, it's no longer beta.

It has been a twisty, turny, windy, and other non-straight words journey for Chameleon, so it's nice to see the launcher hit its first full release. According to the Chameleon Blog, there are still a few kinks to be worked out (which makes me question the "final" release status), but hopefully that'll happen relatively quickly.

If you backed Chameleon on Kickstarter, you should be able to grab the app from the Play Store now.

The team at Chameleon Launcher appear to be keeping up their breakneck-pace for updates, and today have hit a significant milestone in that ongoing process: their first release candidate. It's a pretty big deal for the once-upon-a-time Kickstarter project, and while I personally haven't found much use for it, there's no denying the Chameleon team has absolutely blown through the bugs and issues from the first beta released just a little over a month ago. The 0.9.5 release adds the following:

Here are some of the things included in this build:

  1. Added Dashboard Manager animations when adding/deleting a Dashboard.

Two days ago, Chameleon received an update that brought one of the biggest features yet: the widget API. Not content with one big update this week, however, the Chameleon Team has just push a major performance-improving build to the Play Store, bringing the launcher up to v0.9.2.

The list of fixes and improvements is a good one this go around:

  • Major improvement to memory usage.
  • Much faster start-up, especially for devices running ICS or newer.
  • More stable, with several bug and crash fixes.
  • Improved adding/removing of Dashboards.
  • Improved Time/Date based conditions (Dashboard context).
  • Improved “Edit Conditions” View (now faster and uses less memory).

Since the Chameleon beta first became available, the most requested feature has been for more widgets. The initial build only offered a handful of choices, and while they were all useful, they didn't showcase the launcher's usefulness. More recently, the team updated the application to offer even more widgets, adding a bit more value to the launcher.

Now, however, the launcher has received what I think is its biggest and most important update thus far: the launcher just hit version 0.9.0, which brings the first version of the widget API. Why is this a big deal, you ask? Because developers can now start working on their own widgets just for Chameleon!

Chameleon Launcher received what I would call its first "major" update today, bringing the launcher up to version 0.8.0. Naturally, you can expect performance improvements and bug fixes, but the update also brings something that users have been asking for since the beta launched: more widgets.

The new offerings in the widget department include Facebook, time, and a "switches" widgets that brings power control options to the launcher. Unfortunately, the switches aren't yet customizable, so you're stuck with a stock set of options that includes airplane mode, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, brightness, GPS, and sync. Hopefully the Chameleon team will bring the ability to customize these in a future update.
