Chameleon Launcher Updated (Again) To v0.9.2, Brings Improved Memory Usage, Performance Enhancements, And Smaller File Size

Two days ago, Chameleon received an update that brought one of the biggest features yet: the widget API. Not content with one big update this week, however, the Chameleon Team has just push a major performance-improving build to the Play Store, bringing the launcher up to v0.9.2.

The list of fixes and improvements is a good one this go around:

  • Major improvement to memory usage.
  • Much faster start-up, especially for devices running ICS or newer.

Chameleon Beta Updated To Version 0.9.0 - The Widget API Is Here!

Since the Chameleon beta first became available, the most requested feature has been for more widgets. The initial build only offered a handful of choices, and while they were all useful, they didn't showcase the launcher's usefulness. More recently, the team updated the application to offer even more widgets, adding a bit more value to the launcher.

Now, however, the launcher has received what I think is its biggest and most important update thus far: the launcher just hit version 0.9.0, which brings the first version of the widget API.

Chameleon Launcher Beta Updated To v0.8, Brings New Widgets, Bug Fixes, And Performance Enhancements

Chameleon Launcher received what I would call its first "major" update today, bringing the launcher up to version 0.8.0. Naturally, you can expect performance improvements and bug fixes, but the update also brings something that users have been asking for since the beta launched: more widgets.

The new offerings in the widget department include Facebook, time, and a "switches" widgets that brings power control options to the launcher. Unfortunately, the switches aren't yet customizable, so you're stuck with a stock set of options that includes airplane mode, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, brightness, GPS, and sync.

We've been talking about Chameleon Launcher for a few months now, and despite getting off to a bit of a rocky start, the beta is now officially available for some testers and Kickstarter backers. I've spent the last several days playing with the launcher on a couple different tablets, and, despite the fact that it's still in beta, have been generally impressed.

While everyone with a compatible device can download it, you will need to have an invitation, whether from your Kickstarter pre-order or pre-registration (say, if you're a member of the press or a private beta tester).

If you think you're part of the private beta, head over here (replace YOUR_EMAIL with your pre-reg email address and YOUR_NAME with your name) and associate your registration email with your Play Store account, then grab the app from the Play Store and fire it up.

Chameleon Is Back For Its Second Go On Kickstarter, Hopefully Won't Hit Any Snags This Time

A new project called Chameleon hit Kickstarter last month that promised a whole new interface for Android-powered tablets. We were quite excited about Chameleon, but then the team hit a snag. A big one. They lost their Amazon account that made the Kickstarter listing possible. They were left with no choice but to cancel the pledge drive. And we were all sad.

Now, though, they've opened a new project, and shouldn't have any issues this go around (at least we hope not).

Chameleon: The New Kickstarter Project That Could Revolutionize Tablet Homescreens

It's not every day that I get excited when I look at a UI demo, largely because they tend to end up being vaporware. But it's hard to ignore a revolutionary UI when one comes along - and that's exactly what Chameleon is:

Still not sold? Check out this demo video from 2 months ago, when Chameleon was first announced:

It's certainly a stunning UI, and one that manages the rare feat of being equal parts beautiful and functional.

Action Launcher 3.3 Adds Quicktheme Integration With Live Wallpapers, Fully Customizable System For Shortcuts And Gestures, And More

Developer Chris Lacy has pushed out another update to Action Launcher, bumping the software up to version 3.3. Just over a month has passed since the last major release, and plenty of new features have crept in during that time.

One of the most visual changes is the ability for Quicktheme — which lets Action Launcher match your wallpaper like a chameleon — to integrate with live wallpapers. This is done through an open source API that requires changes on the live wallpaper side of the equation in order to work.
