Lookout, an organization who produces the eponymously-named Lookout app (a free app to help protect your phone from would-be evil-doers) has come up with some scary data in their App Genome Project. To quote Lookout, the App Genome Project is the:

World’s largest analysis of mobile applications to provide insight into what applications are doing and identify potential mobile threats.

Basically, the App Genome Project is Commissioner Gordon to Lookout’s Batman.

Just in case you thought the Samsung Galaxy S would stop its myriad of launches around the world – the Super AMOLED phone has just become available at Three UK under three different pricing plans.

The three price plans are £35, £38, and £40 a month for two years, with the highest plan (called “The One Plan”) giving you 2000 calling minutes, 5000 texts, and 1 GB of data – something users in the US aren’t really familiar with (Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile all having unlimited data, and AT&T having a max of 2 GB.)

If you’re interested, head over here and check it out.

When Apple released a widely criticized video of a Droid X death grip last week, Motorola suddenly found itself as a target of what could essentially be interpreted as a smear campaign. Here is the video for those who managed to miss it:

Of course, the video followed a similar smear aimed at HTC's Droid Eris during a recent Apple press conference focused on antennas and reception. Clearly, Apple is not singling anyone out while trying to defend itself.

T-Mobile certainly dropped a big hint when the word “Vanguard,” believed to be the codename for the HTC Vision, was discovered all over the source code of their HSPA+ phone teaser page. But, according to a leak from Android Central, this phone might not be the slider we’ve seen before – it could be the next model in the myTouch line.

Called the myTouch 3G HD, the phone appears to have the same button layout as the myTouch 3G Slide, including the Genius Button and trackpad.

The following post by XDA member scuccia popped earlier today on the HTC Droid Incredible section of the XDA forums:

Here is a Stock 2.2 ROM with Sense based off the upcoming Froyo OTA. This is completely stock with the additions of su, Superuser.apk and busybox.
Everything has been confirmed working. Camera, camcorder, Wifi, bluetooth, GPS, MMS, etc...
A full wipe and 2.x radio is required.
If you don't have a 2.x radio already you can find instructions instruction here.

Tmonews has leaked a T-Mobile retail partner sales FAQ in which it is explicitly states that T-Mobile will never again stock the Nexus One in their retail stores.

nexusonetmo_wm

This would seem to be the last nail in the coffin for the Nexus One’s US tour, though it is still sold abroad in the UK and South Korea. While the document doesn’t explicitly preclude the possibility of online sales, “The Nexus One was sold and marketed by Google” is pretty damning.

UPDATE 3: We’ve been informed that in an interview earlier today, spokesman Matt Parretta claimed that the capture from the Dell website below was a mistake. Parretta also says he knew nothing about the page’s statement that the phone would be available in late July, saying “I’ve never said that.” (I guess I’ll take him at his word).

Shame on Dell for putting us through all this!

UPDATE 2: It seems those who made it on the Dell Streak pre-order list can expect an e-mail some time today with a link to purchase their new phone.

Still holding onto that HTC Windows Mobile phone? Love the hardware, but hate the OS? Well, you’re in luck, because the enterprising hackers over at XDAndroid.com have developed a version of Android 2.2 (Froyo) that you run from your SD card.

Currently, this version runs on the following HTC phones:

  • Raphael (Touch Pro)
  • Fuze
  • Diamond
  • Blackstone
  • Topaz
  • Rhodium.

Getting Started With XDAndroid

To run XDANDROID, simply download the appropriate version of Android 2.2 (Froyo) for your phone to your computer, extract the files, and copy them to your phone’s sd card.

A few enterprising hackers over at AllDroid have come up with a simpler method for rooting the Droid. Similar to SimpleRoot, it’s a small program that provides a GUI with 2 buttons – “Root Me :)” and “Unroot Me :(,” and bundles in all necessary drivers and bits of code – thus removing the need to download and install the Android SDK.

Once the zip file has been downloaded (you can get it from MediaFire here, or if you’re an AllDroid forum member, you can hit up the read link and login and download it), the instructions are pretty short and sweet:

Update: here is a mirror hosted by our friends at DroidXForums.

T-Mobile-G1

The world’s first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1 (based on the HTC Dream platform), has officially been discontinued today. It is no longer available via T-Mobile’s website.

More than anything, this marks the beginning of the end for the first-generation flagship Android devices, as phones running Android 1.5 and 1.6 are slowly phased out of the Android ecosystem—reducing version fragmentation, and allowing developers and users alike to move away from obsolete software.
