Over at Google's Public Policy Blog (yes, that really exists) today, Senior VP Dennis Woodside issued a statement that the U.S. Department of Justice was taking a "second look" at certain potential antitrust issues in the Google-Motorola deal. What's it mean?

A $12.5 billion acquisition of a major US company that has been independent for over 30 years is always going to invite scrutiny from Uncle Sam, and let's face it, it's probably not a bad sign that the government is batting a second eye at these kinds of purchases.

Ice Cream Sandwich. Those three words are sure to catch the attention of every Android feen within a 10 mile radius. If the mere mention of the upcoming version of Android can cause such a stir amongst the community, just imagine what will happen when we get to see it in action?

Actually, you don't have to imagine -- the first video of Ice Cream Sandwich has just hit the internet.

All I could think after reading the announcement for Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet this morning was: "this is what we've been waiting for." Because it is. Amazon gets tablets, believe it or not. And despite the flagging success of the Amazon Appstore, the company has done what no other tablet manufacturer has even come remotely close to: matching access to Apple's curated content library (iTunes + App Store) at a price nearly everyone can afford.

Flickr is finally available in the form of an App for Android, a mere two years after the photo sharing service made its app debut on iOS.

The app includes a built-in camera interface with focus and flash adjustments, as well as filters and effects for editing photos on the fly.

Flickr's Android app also allows for sharing via your Flickr account, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or email. Users can also browse their photo stream, contact photos, or profile, and utilize a feature called "infinite scrolling," in which all your photos are displayed on one page.

When US Cellular decides to make an announcement, it plays no games. Single device announcements? Puh-leez, that's for kids. Three devices at once? Now that's pro.

That's exactly what the regional carrier just did, too: name dropped three new HTC devices set to land on its network next month. The Wildfire S, Hero S, and Flyer tablet, to be exact. Want the deetz? Keep reading.

Hero S

The long rumored HTC Kingdom is finally official as the Hero S, packing some nice specs under the hood:

  • 4-inch qHD Super LCD display
  • 1.2GHz single-core Snapdragon processor
  • 768MB RAM
  • Android 2.3.x with Sense

Sure, it's no powerhouse, but a 4-inch SLCD at qHD res?

We've all been (or will be, at some point) in this situation: you're sharing expenses with your roommates, when suddenly no one has the funds to cover a particular bill. It's unclear who is supposed to be responsible for the unpaid bill, but, because of one person's shortsightedness, it's up to everyone else to make up the difference.

Not a fun scenario to be a part of, trust me. Fortunately, we live in a tech-powered world, and with the increased popularity of smartphones, communication and organization is easier than ever.

It's no secret that we love developers here at AP -- they are what fuels the Android ecosystem, after all. To show our appreciation for the elite group that get to call themselves 'devs', we've already successfully sent five on their way to various conferences to help further their skills and networking. At the beginning of the month, we gave away two three tickets to the Android Open Conference in San Francisco, and, more recently, we sent a couple of lucky devs to AnDevCon II, also in SF.

ASUS started pushing an update to the Eee Pad Transformer this morning that brings some minor bug fixes, app updates, improved translations, a new feature called "Supernote," and, most notably, Android 3.2.1 to the tablet/laptop hybrid device.

Among the bug fixes and improvements, you should notice a better experience while using the stock browser with Flash content and fewer force closes, as well as better Wi-Fi stability.

The update is rolling out now, you can see if it's available on your device by heading into the Settings > About tablet > Software update menu.
