target

Penetration testers have long turned to laptops for all of the tools needed to get down and dirty with network security, but upcoming app Anti is looking to change all of that by bringing the most commonly used utilities to Android. Unveiled at Defcon, this app offers Wi-Fi scanning for open networks, finding potential target devices along the way. It will also expose the IP addresses of remote servers, as well as offer attacks like Man-in-the-Middle using exploits found in out-of-date software.

26-Android-security

Every year, Defcon brings about some new concepts, hacks, vulnerabilities, and other digital tomfoolery. Sometimes it's all in good fun, but other times it's all too scary, which happens to be the case with a new class of Android malware that could allow for phishing attacks and pop-up ads alike.

Thanks to a design flaw in Android, there is a "feature" that allows an application to steal focus and pull itself into the foreground, bypassing the notification system entirely.

Ever since the Toshiba Thrive came out about a month ago, we've been able to find deals on every variant, except the 32 GB version. There was the 8GB for $380 and the 16GB for $405, but never the 32GB... until now.

Two cores along with a 10 inch display and full USB, HDMI, and SD ports, topped off with 32GB of internal storage can be had for $509.99 (normally $579.99) with free shipping from macmall's eBay account as part of today's eBay Daily Deals.

The HTC dev site, HTCDev.com, announced in early June, opened its doors a few minutes ago to welcome developers from all over the globe into the wonderful world of what HTC is calling OpenSense. OpenSense is a collection of APIs, which currently includes Stereoscopic 3D, Pen, and Common Controls. Developers can download the OpenSense SDK, and view sample code together with handy API docs.

In addition to the OpenSense framework, HTCDev.com is also a new home for all HTC kernel source and ROM update downloads, various FAQs, and, probably the most interesting bit - the Bootloader Unlock tool (coming soon).

atrix-cm7

There is good news for Motorola Atrix users with a penchant for rooting and modding as the CyanogenMod Atrix Developers Team has just released a pre-beta of CM7.

atrix-cm7

User graemegb posted on the XDA Developers Forum yesterday with links to a post on ModMyMobile.com which had download links for the CM7 pre-beta and the accompanying Google Apps package.

According to the post the following components are working with the current pre-beta release:

  • 2G/3G/H+
  • Calls and SMS
  • Wi-Fi
  • Audio
  • USB
  • GPS
  • Display
  • Touchscreen
  • Battery stats
  • Proximity sensor
  • Screen orientation
  • Internal storage and external SD card
  • Multimedia playback (videos, music)

Unfortunately, the Bluetooth and camera are currently not working, in addition to “everything else that wasn't included in the [above] working list”.

It's Sunday night, and as the news fairy is getting ready to go to sleep, I'm really itching to highlight a few things that caught my attention earlier today, for those who aren't following us on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ (really, you should be).

1. Entrance Music

Have you ever wanted to be greeted by your own entrance music the same way boxers do when they enter the ring?

Sorting through the multitude of great submissions to our 404 page design contest, I ran into the following excellent entry by someone named RougeCrown, also known as ~aoisora9x at Deviant Art:

image

Intrigued by his skills, I clicked through to his Deviant Art profile and found a stunning collection of 3D renders of Android and Apple, fighting to the death. I felt that being buried somewhere in the depths of the Deviant Art abyss was no proper way for these pictures to exist - they needed to be seen.

Hercules

Still holding out for the mythical (pun intended) Samsung Hercules, leaked via a T-Mobile roadmap a couple months back? While we don't have any pricing or release info just yet (though that September 26 release date certainly seems possible), TmoNews has gotten a hold of a few pictures of the device that confirmed it as the 4.5" Galaxy S2 T-Mobile variant.

These pictures don't confirm everything that is rumored about the phone, but they do have some good information in them:

  • The Hercules will officially be marketed as a Galaxy S2 phone
  • Runs Android 2.3
  • TeleNav GPS Navigator and Netflix pre-installed
  • 4.5" display
  • TouchWiz 4.0
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • Four capacitive buttons (unlike the international version of the GS2)

Yeah, September can't come soon enough.
