You're in a restaurant and want to know about its chicken. You could ask the waiter, but considering they're an employee, you can only believe what they're saying but so much. If you want to really know whether this place cooks its chicken better than the joint up the road, then there's really only one source you turn to - Yelp. Okay, it's not the only one, but it's the first that comes to mind, and with the latest update, its mobile app is now even better suited for situations such as this. Read More
Android 4.4 has a new screen recording function for developers, but as the CyanogenMod team has already demonstrated, it can be adapted for more general use. Well-known developer Koushik "Koush" Dutta has taken advantage of this for Mirror, a new screencasting app for KitKat that allows any rooted user to either record video directly on a device, or stream to an Apple Airplay-compatible receiver like Apple TV. No custom ROM required. Read More
You probably see that "Display images below" button in Gmail all the time on both mobile and desktop. This is the default behavior because it makes it harder for spammers and advertisers to track you. However, Google says it has prepared a workaround that mitigates the security concern and will allow it to show those images by default.
Verizon shocked many of us by being the first carrier to update the Moto X to Android 4.4. This update came less than a month after KitKat made its first public appearance, and it was followed by OTAs from T-Mobile and AT&T mere days later. Then came US Cellular's turn in early December. Today, Sprint finally rises to the occasion and has started to push out Android 4.4 to its version of the Moto X, making it the last of the large national carriers to do so. Read More
These aren't the first USB flash drives we've seen that double as detachable storage for Android devices - that honor goes to the Leef Bridge from way back in June. But darn it if Sony's new 2-in-1 flash drives aren't a whole lot slicker, combining MicroUSB and standard USB 2.0 plugs into a tiny package. From the single press image, it looks like the entire device is barely bigger than the two plugs put together. Read More
An updated version of Minecraft for Android is hitting devices now, and it brings in a number of exciting things, including the use of powered rails. How a game called "Minecraft" could exist for this long without minecarts may be initially baffling, but this is the pocket edition after all, and some things do take time to bring over to our handy mobile platform. Gamers hooked on this immensely addictive title will also be happy to know that this isn't the only addition making its way over from the PC version. Read More
Android's lock screen hasn't really changed since 4.2, but app developers keep coming up with new ways to wow us. Case in point: Cover. This alternative lockscreen replaces the default screen with a selection of quick-launch app icons, not unlike some of the manufacturer skins out there. But unlike TouchWiz or Sense, Cover automatically learns which apps you use at what times, and it comes with a ton of impressive UI features. Read More
Last night, Google started a slow rollout of the new Maps with version 7.5. Since the previous version was 7.4, we knew there had to be some key features that prompted the update - it couldn't just be a bug fixer. After thoroughly examining the UI, I was unable to find anything new.
As it turns out, that's because the new feature Google stuffed into the app only shows up upon very specific conditions. Read More
Cartoon Network has been cranking out games lately based on its widely successor series of properties, with Regular Show getting a shot in October and Ben 10 taking a swing in November. Less than a month later, the network is back with a zany mobile game starring the cast of Adventure Time. Ski Safari: Adventure Time may not have the most original premise in the world, but if you're going to shoehorn characters into something that will occupy players' time between bus stops, why not go with a formula that has been proven successful.
