Last month, we gave on dev a free ticket to Apps World North America, which took place on November 1-2 in New York City. Apps World Europe is coming up at the end of the month -- November 29-30, to be exact -- and now we're looking to hook up one lucky EU dev with a way in to conference.

Like previous giveaways, this is for the ticket only. You are responsible for your own transportation, lodging, and any other associated expenses.

The rumor mill is going nuts with release dates for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, and now we can add one more to the list. We already know that the European version of the device will be available on November 17th, and, according to an uncompleted internal Verizon document nabbed by Android Central, it looks like Verizon may be joining the global revolution on the same day.

There is absolutely nothing that screams confirmed!

unbranded android phone

It's not much of a secret that Android's success is in no small part due to the broad range of devices which are currently available on the market. There is a phone for everyone available if you look hard enough, from top-of-the-range choices such as the Samsung Galaxy S II all the way down to cheap, unbranded phones from China.

For those on a budget this choice can only be a good thing, but for carriers, it turns out that the cheaper devices may actually do more harm than good.

If Google's Groupon competitor Offers is available in your area, then you you'll be happy to know that the companion app to the service has just been released to the Android Market. The app allows you to find and buy the best deals in your area on-the-go, as well as notify you about deals that match your interests and allow you to purchase and redeem them instantly.

We've heard the rumors and seen the pictures, but Motorola just made the XOOM 2 official. Just like suspected, there are two different versions: a 10.1-inch model, geared towards enterprise and corporate users; and an 8.2-inch Media Edition, designed for movies and music playback. In terms of hardware spec, both tablets are little more than an incremental upgrade from the original XOOM:

  • 1.2GHz dual-core processor (probably OMAP)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB built-in storage
  • 5MP rear camera, VGA front
  • Android 3.2

All day in my RSS reader, I've been hearing about how PayPal is coming to the Android Market. Someone ripped apart the latest Market APK and found references to PayPal, assumed this was new, and assumed that it meant PayPal support would be soon be hitting the Market.

The problem is it's not new, we found PayPal references in the market going all the way back to 3.0.26, the first release of the current market design.

OK, before I even get into this post, let me be clear: this is based on old news. However, it was news that no one seemed to pick up at the time, and when we discovered it, we thought it was quite interesting.

If you're unfamiliar with Lodsys, let's start with a history lesson. They're better known as the shell corporation offspring of a company called Intellectual Ventures LLC, a patent clearinghouse owned by a group of, shall we say, enterprising individuals.

About a month after CUKETA got us excited about Age of Defenders, their unique new take on tower defense has hit the Android Market. Of course I had to get a copy and check it out for myself. I wasn't disappointed.

At A Glance

First of all, Age of Defenders is gorgeous. The menus, loading screens, and of course the gameplay environments are all extremely polished and look great. Besides its aesthetic appeal, Defenders offers a lot in the way of functionality.

We love giving stuff away here at AP, and today we have ten cases from Incipio to hand out to ten lucky readers. Incipio offers five main types of case: Dermashot, feather, Silicrylic, NGP, and Edge (they also make a case called "Step" for the Droid X2). I've recently spent some hands-on time with the Dermashot, feather, and Silicrylic models, so before we get into the giveaway, we're going to take a closer look at those.

Looking for a name brand tablet that won't break the bank? Want to relive the late '80s? If you answered yes to both of those questions, brace yourself, because we've got some good news for you.

Update: It's worth noting that this is not the same Amiga from the good ol' days. It's actually another company named Amiga, Inc. which owns all of the old-school Amiga patents. It's confusing, but here's the Wikipedia excerpt that breaks it down:

The rights to the Amiga platform were successively sold to Escom and later Gateway 2000, but Escom almost immediately went bankrupt itself (due to non-Amiga related problems) and Gateway vacillated over what to do with its new acquisition.
