We've been talking about Gingerbread for the Droid Incredible and its on-again-off-again status quite a bit lately, but after the official support docs showed up on VZW's site, we had confirmation of what we knew all along: the update is alive and kicking. It was rumored that it would start rolling out OTA-style earlier in the week but was delayed for unknown reasons, leaving Incredible owners without their cookie-filled upgrade just a little bit longer.

Fortunately, the wait is over, as we've received and exclusive leak of the Gingerbread RUU from a giving tipster. This looks like the final build, as it shares all the same version number from Verizon's documentation (4.06.605.2), as well as the same baseband (2.15.10.07.07).

The EVO 3D is easily one of the hottest phones on Sprint right now, and with good reason. It's fast, functional, fluid, and brings a lot of incredible features to the table, like 3D and Sense 3.0. If you've been waiting for a good deal to come along before dumping your current carrier and switching to The Now Network, now is the time, as Amazon Wireless is letting this 3D shooter go for $99 with a new two-year agreement. The deal is not as sweet for current Sprintsters, though, as the price is nearly doubled for a contract renewal ($180), which will still save you a bit of change versus the retail front.

The DROID Incredible has remained without Gingerbread while its successor, the Incredible 2, has had it for well over a month. A Verizon support rep is now claiming that the Incredible's long awaited Ginger-bump has been put on hold pending final approval from Verizon's product team - which basically translates to: we're not happy with it yet.

It could be a single bug, or wider user experience problems. This means the delay may last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks - or more. We'll keep you updated if more information develops, but for now, your guess on a date is as good as ours.

Last week, an HTC support representative told a customer that the Droid Incredible would not be updated to Gingerbread. Of course, we questioned this claim's validity, as we were absolutely certain that there was a test build on Verizon's servers at the time the statement was issued.

Turns out we were right, as the official update page is now live on Big Red's website. This is pretty good news for Incredible owners -- but the better news is that it's probably coming sooner than you think; possibly as early as this week.

Lets have a look at the changelog:

  • Gingerbread -- and all the added enhancements that go along with it
  • MMS Messages send correctly
  • Successfully play audio files from a message
  • Send Vcard through SMS
  • Internet connections via Bluetooth now enabled
  • VZ Navigator now operates over Wi-Fi
  • Change songs in the Music widget by tapping the forward button
  • Camera functions successfully without inserting SD card

As you can see, aside from all of the added benefits of Gingerbread, this update also brings several bug-fixes to the Incredible.

A little more than two weeks ago a revolutionary (pun intended) new unlock and root solution was released by AlphaRev and Unrevoked that provided S-Off and NAND write access to a number of HTC devices. That tool received an update today that adds a number of previously unsupported device to the mix:

  • HTC EVO 3D GSM
  • HTC Thunderbolt
  • HTC EVO 4G running Gingbebread
  • HTC myTouch 4G Slide
  • HTC Droid Incredible 2 running Gingerbread
  • 0.4pre3
    - Fixed support for HTC myTouch 4G Slide (doubleshot) 1.44.0007

  • 0.4pre2
    - Fixed support for HTC Incredible 2 (vivo_w) 0.97.0000, only works on Gingerbread now!

  • 0.4pre1
    - Added support for more devices and expanded/improved support for existing devices

  • Prior to this release, neither the EVO 4G nor Incredible 2 with Gingerbread had received S-Off and root, so these new additions to the Revolution family are welcome ones, to say the least.

Earlier today, HTC sent a jolt of electricity through our tired bodies when their PR agency told us an exciting tale of important announcements scheduled to be delivered by Peter Chou himself (that's HTC's CEO) tomorrow morning.

Bootloader unlocking, exciting new phones and tablets, hoverboards - all of these thoughts started rapidly running through our minds, but like kids who couldn't wait until Christmas to unwrap their presents, the company first spilled the beans to AllThingsD, then followed up mere hours later with full details. Way to ruin a surprise, guys (oh, and the presents kind of suck).

In a deal estimated to be worth around $300 million, HTC and Beats By Dr.

Droid Incredible owners, brace yourselves for some potentially bad news -- ready? After months of waiting, it looks like HTC may have scrapped its plans to bring Gingerbread to the Droid Incredible, according to a support rep.

    Dear XXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC in regards to Operating System upgrades to your Droid Incredible, XXXX.

Our goal is to give every customer the best possible experience on every phone. Every HTC phone is a combination of a unique HTC hardware and software experience and a core operating system. We only update our phones if it will provide an overall improved user experience as we balance features, performance and usability.

Skysoft... errr, I mean Skype updated its previously measly Android device support from 5 devices to more than 20 today with the introduction of version 2.1 of its Android app. There are no new features outside of expanded device support, which was badly needed in order for the app to climb out of the sea of 1-star reviews (although stability and quality improvements would have made today's release even sweeter).

Update: Other devices with 2.2+ should work, but you need to enable Video support in the settings, according to the in-app changelog.

The new devices are (glad to see many flagships here):

    • Samsung Galaxy S II
    • Samsung Galaxy S
    • Samsung Droid Charge - Verizon
    • Samsung Galaxy Tab
    • HTC Desire (2.2)
    • HTC Thunderbolt - Verizon
    • HTC Sensation
    • HTC Evo 4G
    • HTC Evo 3D
    • HTC Incredible S
    • HTC Desire HD
    • HTC Flyer
    • LG Revolution - Verizon (2.2)
    • Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
    • Sony Ericsson Xperia ray
    • Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro
    • Acer A5

As usual, download the app from the Market by using the links below.

    DeskSMS

As a Canadian, I can't use Google Voice in order to send my SMS. However, there are numerous apps that act very similarly, including the new DeskSMS from the developer who brought you ClockworkMod.

DeskSMS transfers SMS to both your e-mail and other IM applications through the use of your Google Account. This allows you to answer SMS on-the-go and with the use of a full keyboard. As someone with big fingers, I can't tell you how annoying it is to try to do a large amount of typing with an on-screen keyboard. This definitely helps.

The app is in free beta, but presumably won't stay that way forever.
