It seems that I'm not the only one who has always wanted to send a zipped-mouth, a nerd face, an eye-rolling expression, a sign of the horns, a popcorn box, or a popped champagne bottle when chatting away with my friends in the mysterious language of emojis. The Unicode Standard, which is the character coding system used by computers (and phones and digital devices) to read and display the various characters, alphabets, and emojis you use every day, has been updated to version 8 and it brings those additions along with more changes. It's been almost eight months since the Federal Communications Commission opened its lawsuit against AT&T for misleading statements on its "unlimited" data plans. Today the Commission announced its intention (PDF link) to fine the wireless company $100 million for failing to notify its customers that going over unspecified data limits on an "unlimited" plan would result in severely reduced or "throttled" speed, well below advertised speeds, violating the 2010 Open Internet Transparency Rule. Android Wear 5.1 is a substantial update. It has rolled out to pretty much all of the current smartwatches, except for the Moto 360. Motorola's smartwatch has been hampered by issues and delays. Fortunately, it looks like that is about to change. Googler Wayne Piekarski announced via Google+ that an over-the-air update will start hitting devices today.
Why are we excited about this update? It brings Wi-Fi connectivity, cloud sync, always on apps, and a number of other useful features. I regularly activate my own Moto 360 by accident, so the inclusion of a built-in lockscreen is reason enough to want the latest version. Read More
