Whenever there's a new gadget you can personalize, a series of staple geek-inspired designs will make their way onto it as fast as possible—Matrix, Tron, Star Wars, Star Trek, and so on. The terminal look is one such perfect example. Because of its text-based nature, it can replace any graphical interface with more information in a less obvious manner. And it looks cool doing so.
One last app came rolling in at the tail end of update Wednesday. This time, we've got a relatively small update to Android Device Manager, Google's answer for lost or stolen phones. The changelog hasn't been posted on the Play Store, but a quick teardown told us everything we needed to know. There's a new callback feature that makes contacting the owner a one-touch operation.
Gaming is one of the things Amazon touted quite a bit for Fire TV, and the company released an exclusive title called Sev Zero to show off everything its set-top box can do. The game is a mixture of tower defense and action shooter, which offers a unique blend of gameplay.
The company also released a companion app for the Kindle Fire HDX, which allows a two player co-op experience where the second player offers air support for player one.
Do you remember going to the arcade as a kid (... or an adult) and playing Crazy Taxi? The awesome soundtrack, the absurd physics? The almost unbelievable number of taxi drivers with unbuttoned shirts? Those were the good old days, and you paid for them - maybe $0.50 a pop for a ride in the Crazy Taxi seat.
Well, if you liked paying for Crazy Taxi by the minute then, you'll love paying for it on a regular basis now!
The exact number of prepaid subscribers T-Mobile cites is 15.64 million, about half a million above former #1 Sprint's 15.19 million. Sprint, of course, operates two major American prepaids - Virgin Mobile and Boost. AT&T and Verizon lag behind at 11.34 million and 6.04 million prepaid subscribers, respectively.
Managing your Dropbox space on Windows or Mac isn't a terribly difficult affair - the platforms have tons of 3rd party disk usage analysis utilities and management tools that will happily do all sorts of things to keep your usage in check. Managing Dropbox on the go, though, is a bit harder. Because Dropbox doesn't sync directly to your device, you need an app that can hook directly into your Dropbox account and analyze the contents remotely.
The last update Wednesday was a quiet one, but Google is picking up steam today with that Play Music update and now Google Search is hitting v3.6. This update should enable deep linking for apps through search, and there's some more movement on hands-free mode. No, it doesn't work yet, but check out the hands-free icons below!
The folks over at Laptop Mag have undertaken a test that really piques our interest. The results show that T-Mobile smartphones consistently get the best battery life among the big four US carriers. The difference isn't insignificant either. We're talking about a steady gap of up to three hours, depending on the phone.
In the chart below we see variation between the 2013 and 2014 versions of Samsung and HTC's flagships.
Uber and Lyft have both separately announced two similar but unrelated ways of doing the same thing. In either case, people will soon have the ability to share rides with others in order to cut down on how much they have to pay. Uber's announcement yesterday came first, but the two are too close together for this to not have already been in the works at Lyft as well.
In the former's case, the feature goes by the name of UberPool.
There comes a time in the evolution of every tech company where things just need a refresh. For Foursquare, that time is now. Last month the company branched its core app into two separate offerings, with the friends-hanging-out portion taking the name of Swarm. Now the mainline app's refresh has arrived, and it's all about delivering personalized recommendations. Think more Yelp and less Twitter.
The new Foursquare wants you to find places, food, and things that turn you on.
