Google hyped up Android One, its initiative to get Android-powered phones into the hands of more people in the developing world, back at Google I/O. They made good on their promises today in India, launching new phones in partnership with local hardware vendors Spice, Micromax, and Karbonn. The first three Android One phones are available today starting at Rs. 6299 ($103 USD at current currency rates) without a contract at major online Indian retailers.

Last week a Wall Street Journal report suggested that Microsoft and Mojang were considering an acquisition worth upwards of $2 billion, and a Reuters article later stated that an announcement would come today, revealing an agreed price of $2.5 billion. Now it's official. Mojang's Chief World Officer Owen Hill has taken to its blog to confirm that the two and half billion dollar acquisition is definitely happening.

Speaking for Minecraft's creator, Hill says in the post that it was never Markus Persson's - known as Notch - intention for the game to get this big.

You won't find a Phones 4u store anywhere on Main Street USA, but our United Kingdom readers are probably quite familiar with the mobile-focused retailer. Alas, they might not be seeing them for long. The BBC reports that the company is in administration (similar to bankruptcy) after UK carrier EE decided not to renew its contract with Phones 4u stores on Friday. EE was the last carrier to remain as a partner following Vodafone's exit earlier this month.

If you follow developer Jack Underwood (or myself) on Google+, you're probably aware that Today Calendar, a calendar replacement that has traditionally put streamlined, pleasing design at the center of its mission, is undergoing a full redesign in anticipation of Android's L release and inspired by Google's new design guidelines.

Until now, testing has been limited to a small community of intrepid early adopters, but today the app has entered a public beta through the Play Store.

Air Hockey would be a lot more fun if it had multiple players. And crazy Tron-inspired colors. And guns. That seems to be the basic idea behind Futu Hoki (Future Hockey, if that was too subtle), a new game from the developer of the popular Glow Hockey 3D. The new game is essentially Air Hockey squared, or perhaps Hungry Hungry Hippos in reverse: as the super-glowy guns at all four corners of the board shoot out rolling balls, you have to defend your side in Pong fashion.

Motorola, in a post to its official blog today, announced that the Moto 360 would be back in stock on its website beginning Tuesday, September 16th. What's more exciting, though, is the promise of pre-order for new products beginning the same day. Yes, that means the new Moto X.

But before you get too excited, only the Moto X Pure Edition (the unbranded, unlocked version), and the AT&T variant will be available for pre-order Tuesday.

obihai

You've probably heard the joke by now. A 20-something job applicant or apartment hunter or a long-suffering customer support victim is talking to someone who asks him, "and what's you're landline number?" To which the young man replies, "what the hell is a landline?" But niche hardware company Obihai aims to bring back the home phone with its line of VOIP phones and adapters that use your broadband connection to make and receive calls without a landline.

The dawn of Google's Android One program is fast approaching, with an official announcement for the Indian market expected tomorrow. We've already seen the Android One phone from manufacturer Spice make a brief appearance, and the Twitter account for Amazon.in (the retailer's Indian branch) has teased an upcoming Micromax model. You can see the tweet below:

Presumably the 3:30 PM timeframe refers to India Standard Time, which would be 6 AM Eastern in the United States.

In the market for a new tablet? Have a "the bigger, the better" mentality? Don't want to spend more than $400 on a new tablet? Good news all around: Groupon has some good deals on the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 and Tab Pro 12.2 today – both the black and white versions of each are going for $299 and $380 respectively. It's worth noting that these are refurbished units, but hey, they're $100-$150 off the price of a new device.

Lets be honest: Android's default volume panel is pretty boring. It does its job, but it's super basic, and many of the options to enhance its functionality are root-only, which excludes a large number of Android users. Enter Noyze Volume Panel, a customizable replacement that doesn't require root access (or any other modifications) and works well.

Once installed, Noyze requires activation in Accessibility settings, but after that it's basically on autopilot.
