Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Air are part of a platform that has proven revolutionary for web content and user experiences since its creation. That platform is about to get a major update, coming in "early October," which introduces Stage 3D, an architecture that promises hardware-accelerated rendering at 1000x the speed of Flash Player 10.

Adobe also boasts support for theater-quality HD video, native 64-bit optimizations, and HD video conferencing in the upcoming release.

Amazon's Appstore for Android is well known for handing out paid apps for free, but normally users don't have a choice in which apps are offered up. Amazon is currently running a promotion that changes that, however, offering a $2.00 credit to anyone who follows @amazonappstore and allows Amazon to tweet a special message on their behalf.

Getting the credit is as easy as pressing a button, and sending out one promotional tweet is a small price to pay for $2.00 worth of free apps.

A new month, a new batch of cities all lined up to get the LTE treatment, courtesy of Big Red. This go around, we're hearing that at least 21 new cities will be getting blanketed in VZW's ultra-fast LTE network, a follow up to the 26 that were just activated. The list of cities isn't available in its entirety just yet, but here's what we have so far:

  • Fort Myers, FL
  • Bloomington, Elkhart, Evansville, South Bend and Terre Haute, IN
  • Sioux City, IA
  • Hagerstown, MD
  • Tupelo, MS
  • Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM
  • Buffalo, NY
  • Asheville, NC
  • Bartlesville, OK
  • Jackson and Martin, TN
  • Greater Hampton Roads and Richmond, VA
  • Green Bay, WI

San Diego and Los Angeles, CA are said to be getting an expanded coverage area, as well.

With the arrival of Honeycomb 3.1 came some really nice features, including one of the most useful to date: USB host support. This allows users to plug thumb drives, external hard drives, mice, keyboards, and more into their tablets and use them with little-to-no hassle.

Out of the many uses for USB host support, adding a game controller to your tablet is a simple way to have more fun with your device -- it improves the experience with a lot of games, especially if, like me, you hate touchscreen controls.

If you've been searching for some green 3" vinyl plastic Android figurines, look no further: Karen Deals is selling them for $6.95 plus $2.98 for shipping, or $9.93 shipped - the lowest price we've seen. The toys are officially licensed by Google and created by artist Andrew bell, and have moving arms and swivel heads. At just under $10, certainly not a bad deal for Android lovers.

We've been talking about NVIDIA's Project Kal-El, aka Tegra 3, for a few months now, and the company has released some official whitepapers on the architecture and core benefits of the new chip. After reading through the documentation, I am left with but one thought: this processor is going to slaughter everything currently on the market.

It's more than just two additional cores

One common misconception about new quad-core devices is that they're only adding two more cores.

The Hulu Plus app for Android has just been updated to v1.0.139 and adds support for 9 new devices:

  • HTC Incredible 2
  • HTC EVO 3D
  • HTC Sensation
  • Motorola Droid 3
  • Motorola Bionic
  • Motorola X2
  • LG Revolution
  • LG G2x
  • HTC Flyer

The only other change that's listed is "Improved playback performance." A small update, but significant for the devices it adds.

Here's to hoping that they continue to add devices at a healthy clip!

Defender vs Commuter
Last Updated: October 13th, 2011

I am a fan of cases. In fact, right when I buy a phone, I always order a case to go with it. When I got my Evo 4G from Sprint last year, I went through a couple of different cases before settling with one for any reasonable amount of time. While I ended up using a Bodyglove case for quite a while, my mind was almost immediately changed when a friend of mine gave me an Otterbox Commuter case.

Just as some were speculating that Google's invite-only signup system for their latest social networking venture would be its eventual downfall, the Google Mobile blog announced that Google+ is transitioning into beta, bringing open signups with it.

That isn't the only change Google has cooked up, though. Google+ has been updated with a host of new features in an effort by Google to show how fast they can implement users' "most requested features."

Perhaps the most exciting change to Google+ is the addition of Hangouts to the mobile app with the v1.07 update.

The HP TouchPad Android port has been a fascinating journey to follow. Last we spoke of the device, Team CM showed off multitouch and GPU acceleration; and, since then, great strides have been made in the way of the port. Basically everything works as it should now, including Wi-Fi, sound, the accelerometer, 3D games, and video acceleration.

While everything appears to be running smoothly, Team CM reminds us that this is still a closed alpha build and it's not quite ready for the masses, as "things still aren't as reliable as [they'd] like."

For more information on the status of the project, check out this thread over at RootzWiki.
