[Game Roundup] Our Top Seven Picks For The Best New Games Of February 2015

Dear readers: I have a confession to make. I completely forgot about our monthly best-of games series, because when the event came up on the calendar I was busy drooling over the new SHIELD set-top box and other Game Developers Conference-related stuff in San Francisco. Here, belated but hopefully still appreciated, are my picks for the top seven Android games of last month and a few honorable mentions.

[Weekend Poll] Battery Life Versus Thinness, FIGHT!

Almost four years ago, we ran a poll on the subject of battery life versus thinness. Four years ago, Android's battery life was even worse than it is now, batteries were smaller, and LTE radios could be a death sentence on newer handsets. Today... battery life still isn't that good on most phones, but it's not as bad as it once was, and all the while the phones are getting thinner and lighter and sleeker.

There are phones with massive batteries out there (Huawei Ascend Mate 2/7, DROID MAXX, etc.), but batteries have generally only sought to keep pace with screen size over the years instead of actually growing enough to appreciably extend the amount of time we spend off the charger.

[Update: Rolling Out] T-Mobile's HTC One M7 Lollipop Update Scheduled For Tuesday, March 10th

Hey, HTC One M7 (2013) owners on T-Mobile, are you jealous of your counterparts in Europe, or on Sprint, or those who use the Developer Edition? You know, because they all have the Lollipop update (or at least access to a ROM file) before you do? Well fret no more: HTC's most excellent vice president of product management Mo Versi is back with another one of his One update announcement proclamations:

[Deal Alert] Woot Offers The Jawbone BIG Jambox Bluetooth Speaker In Three Colors For $187.99 (Over $100 Off)

In the book of Judges, the Hebrew champion Samson claims to have killed a thousand men with a donkey's jawbone. We wouldn't recommend killing anyone with the Jawbone BIG Jambox, but if you just happen to be surrounded by a hoard of enemies, it's probably a better blunt instrument than the standard model. Consumers in the market for high-fidelity Bluetooth speakers and/or weapons of biblical destruction can pick one up from Woot today for just $187.99.

That's a hefty $112 off of the $300 retail price, a 37% discount made all the sweeter because these speakers are brand new, not refurbished like many of Woot's sales.

Shuttle Music Player Updated To v1.5 With A Material Overhaul, New Artwork Scanner, And More

Google still doesn't have a Play Music API for third-party apps, so I'm essentially forced to use the official app for streaming my music. If I had the option of using any music app and still getting my cloud tunes, I'd use Shuttle—we've even recommended it a few times. This app is feature-rich and has a slick design, but it's getting even better today with a big update to v1.5. This is the second phase of the developer's material redesign, and it's looking great.

Hangouts For Android Gets Easy Video Chat Invitation Links

Hangouts video chats are pretty good in terms of handling multiple up and down streams, but the invitation and verification system leaves a lot to be desired - there's something of a traffic jam when we start the Android Police podcast video, for example. Today Google is making that a little easier by allowing mobile users to join a Hangouts video session with a simple invitation link, instead of needing an explicit, personal invitation via the Hangouts/Google+ system.

This has been possible on a standard desktop or Chrome OS device for a few months, but now it's enabled for Android connections as well.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro (13") Review: Interesting Hardware And Poor Software Combine To Make a Below-Average Tablet

Lenovo has crammed just about everything it can think of into the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro to make it interesting, with the exception of a stylus and a can opener. And it is interesting, from a purely technical point of view - it has a huge 13" screen, 2.1 JLB speakers, integrated kickstand, and oh yeah, a built-in pico projector. This machine epitomizes one of the best things about Android hardware: a diversity of manufacturers can yield an amazing variety of features.

Unfortunately, Lenovo's design is more ambitious than its execution. With a build quality that's only average, some questionable hardware decisions, and a software experience that's poor at best, the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro simply won't be worth a look for most people.

Cerberus Anti-Theft App Updated With Android Wear Support And Lollipop Administrator Privileges

Cerberus is a solid little app that makes it easy (or at least easier) to find/lock your phone or tablet if it's lost or stolen. The app has accumulated over a million downloads on the Play Store, so clearly it has earned some loyal users. The update to version 3.1 adds a couple of crucial features: full support for both Android Wear and Android 5.0. If you have either one, you'll appreciate the added functionality.

2015-03-07 17.13.12

For Android Wear, Cerberus can send an alert to your watch to let you know when it's lost a connection with the phone or tablet. Wear has this functionality built-in, but it's more of a notification than a "your phone is being stolen" alert.
