It's been a while since we've seen Samsung do anything in the high-end tablet market; in fact, the original Tab S was probably the last flagship tablet the manufacturer released. But today marks the nationwide availability of that tablet's successor(s), the Tab S2 9.7 and S2 8.0.
As the names suggest, this pair packs 9.7-inch and 8.0-inch displays, respectively, both using the 4:3 aspect ratio that many users crave (and equally as many users hate). Otherwise, these are both packing some pretty intense hardware under the hood:
- SoC: Quad 1.9GHz + Quad 1.3GHz, Octacore application processor
- Display: 2048×1536(QXGA) Super AMOLED
- OS: Android 5.0 (Lollipop)
- Camera: 8MP AF(rear), 2.1MP(front)
- Memory: 3GB(RAM) + 32/64GB internal memory, microSD up to 128GB
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac MIMO (2.4GHz/5GHz), Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth®4.1 BLE
- GPS: GPS, GLONASS
- Sensor: Accelerometer, Finger Scanner, Gyroscope, Compass, Hall Sensor, RGB Sensor
- Audio: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, Vorbis, FLAC
- Video: H.263, H.264(AVC), MPEG4, VC-1, WMV7, WMV8, VP8.
Fans of Madfinger's over-the-top Dead Trigger series have been waiting for a follow-up for some time. Wait no longer, FPS enthusiasts: UNKILLED, the self-styled "best-looking zombie shooter ever made for mobile devices," is now available for wide download on the Play Store. You'll need an Android 4.1 or higher device, about 200MB of storage, and a strong tolerance for shooting things in the face in order to install it, but you won't need any money. Read More
It's taken Google more than a year to update its own apps to comply with its new design philosophy, and we're still seeing apps just now receive the Material blessing. Google Admin, the administrator app of Google Apps, is the latest one to get a fresh coat of paint. This follows the update to the Admin web console that we saw back in February this year.
You should know by now what to expect of a Material design look so I won't dwell over that. For a comparison, this is what Google Admin looked like a few days ago and below is what you should see once the app is updated. Read More
I love this smartphone era we're going through. Two years ago, something like Lenovo's new P1 or P1m would have cost a fortune, but now these devices are launching in the low to midrange, with prices that could awe and tempt the best of us. As David said a few days ago, the cheap smartphone is rising and that benefits us all.
So what's so special about these Lenovo devices? Mostly, their battery size. The larger P1 (5.5" Full HD IPS display) has a 5,000 mAh battery, good for about 45 hours of 4G talk time. The smaller P1m (5" 720p IPS display) gets a 4,000 mAh battery, which should last for 16 hours of 4G talk time. Read More
When you read the words "zombie-themed base-builder," some of the more hilariously awful games on the Play Store come to mind, including this classic gem of wanton intellectual property theft. But don't close the tab just yet: Rebuild 3 is a zombie of a different off-green hue. First of all, it comes from developer Northway Games, which made such unique titles as Inredipede and Deep Under the Sky. Second, it's a premium $5 title with no in-app purchases, which is more than you can say for the vast majority of both builder and zombie games for Android.
And third, it's just a solid game overall. Read More
Sony is one of the very rare companies who know how to balance the right level of features between smaller and larger devices. Their newly announced Z5 series has a very powerful Z5 Compact, a good Z5, and a slightly fluffed up Z5 Premium, all without compromising on processor, RAM, or camera performance.
However, that comes at a price and we're just starting to discover what the tag will be on these smartphones. Sony's announcement didn't include any pricing details, but retailers all across Europe and the UK have begun listing the different Z5 devices on their sites. Here are the known amounts of euros and pounds you should part with:
- In the UK
- In Germany - same prices on Amazon and the Sony Mobile Store
- Xperia Z5 Compact: €549
- Xperia Z5: €699
- Xperia Z5 Premium: €799
- In France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain - on the Sony Mobile Store
- Xperia Z5 Compact: €599
- Xperia Z5: €699
- Xperia Z5 Premium: €799
So yeah, that's a boatload of money for the Z5 Premium and a lesser one for the other two models. Read More
If you're like me, then there are at least 2-3 apps that find a new home on your phone every week, because they just seem cool. These apps start piling up after a while and eating away at your battery and RAM in the background, even when you're not actively using them. Greenify solves this issue by hibernating selected apps when they're not in the foreground, essentially stopping all of their processes until you launch them again. And now the app has received a nice update that makes it even better.
Version 2.7 adds experimental Android 6.0 support so you can use the app if you've flashed Marshmallow Preview 3 on your device. Read More
Hey there, people who live in the Land of the Rising Sun, who end their day when we're about to start ours, and who have brought plenty of appreciated contributions to our modern lives, like sushi and mangas. Now is your time to receive a small export of Western society, in the form of Google Play Music access.
Both support pages for Google Play's paid purchases and country availability for apps and digital content have received a recent update to add Japan to their lists. This means that Android users in Japan should either already or soon have access to Play Music and Play Music All Access so they can individually purchase songs and albums or pay a monthly fee for unlimited access to thousands of tunes. It's always fun to have the latest and greatest version of the gadgets we love, but sometimes the previous generation is nearly as good and a better overall value. Such may be the case with the new Nest Learning Thermostat.
The 3rd generation of the popular temperature controller was announced yesterday and boasts a few minor improvements over the now "old" 2nd generation Nest. The display is larger, it's a bit thinner, and sports a couple of new features and sensors. If you want to read the full breakdown of changes you can read Cameron's article about the product announcement here. Read More
Google Street View has always been a part of Google Maps on Android, even though it was technically a separate APK. Everything is changing today with the big v2.0 Street View update. For the first time ever, Street View is a standalone app in your app drawer with its own distinct functionality. There's a lot to sort through here, so let's dig in. Read More
