Little by little, Spotify is bringing all sorts of new and useful features to its mobile app. First it was Radio, and now the company is introducing a new feature called Browse that will allow users to find the perfect playlist for a specific event or mood.
Spotify's new discovery option brings specially curated playlists to mobile devices – both iOS and Android – that offer varying types of music according to mood or moment, as well as options for what's hot and new. Read More
The week is just getting underway, and I have it on good authority that it's predicted to be 12% longer and 37% more boring than the average week. You better prepare with some new apps and games. Money being in short supply, why not check out these sales?
The shiny new Nexus 7 may be the current king of the 7-inch jungle, but that doesn't mean you should pass up a good deal. The Kindle Fire HD - that's the upgraded 720p tablet, not the newer non-HD Fire - is $40 off for all models at the moment. The Amazon storefront shows "For a Limited Time," so we have no idea how long this price will last.
The price drop applies to all the variations of the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. Read More
Guardian Cross is different from most most Square Enix mobile games. It's still a role-playing game, but it's centered around trading cards and is available for free. This is striking for a game company that charges some of the highest prices to be found in the Play Store. The game is already available for iOS and has accumulated over a million downloads, so expect both an addicting and relatively accessible experience. Read More
The trend towards integrated, non-removable batteries has caused much weeping and gnashing of teeth among the Android faithful, and nowhere is it more passionate than from the Nexus crowd. If you've been lamenting the Nexus 4's lack of a removable battery, ZeroLemon (purveyors of ridiculously huge extended batteries for major phones) has something they'd like you to see.
That's an external battery case, a form factor famous for turning svelte, short-lived iPhones into hulking bricks of longevity. Read More
When I checked out the WiFi-only version of the Xperia Tablet Z I was surprised by how solid it was. One of my main gripes was the old software and the UI that came with it. Well, the first variant of the Tablet Z is now getting an update to Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2, and it changes the interface to a hybrid of the old UI and new UI used on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. It was only a matter of time. Samsung just sent out invitations to the their latest Unpacked press event, this time labeled "Episode 2." It's scheduled for 1PM EST on September 4th, just under one month from today, before the annual IFA show in Berlin. Android newshounds will recall that the original Galaxy Note got its debut at the same venue back in 2011.
There's little doubt that new Note hardware will be the focus of this event: stylized text reading "NOTE THE DATE" is emblazoned on the invite. Read More
Samsung seems to be on a bit of an update spree lately, trying to get its devices up to speed on Android 4.2. This time it's the LTE Galaxy Note 8.0 and the somewhat older Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with 3G. Attacking the system update button like an enraged jungle cat won't do any good, folks. These updates are rolling out in stages.
The Note 8.0 update is starting in the UK, with expansions to more countries soon. Read More
For most people, a black phone is fine. The slightly more trendy might be drawn to a clean white exterior. But not you. Oh no, you want a phone that's brown like fine Corinthian leather. A phone that you can feel proud to hoist above your head and exclaim for all the world to hear that you are a man, and this is a man's phone! Ladies will probably like it too, but for different reasons. Read More
The Chromecast is a nice and easy way to send videos to a local TV, and you can't argue with the price. But right now it's limited to just a few apps streaming directly from existing video and music services. Bubblesoft, makers of the BubbleUPnP media server, are showing off features of an upcoming version that would make Chromecast a lot more useful: streaming nearly any file on your smartphone or cloud drive.
