[App Of The Week] DiskUsage Helps Uncover Your Phone's Internal And SD Card Fat Deposits

Introduction

If you're like most Android users, you may run into slight space issues when it comes to available internal storage for apps. The daunting task you face, then, is to go through each of your apps and locate the major megabyte offenders. What a pain.

Alternatively, you may discover that your precious SD card is suddenly refusing to write a new episode of the Stuff You Should Know podcast (which is awesome), so  now you have to drop everything to figure out where the fat is.

Enter DiskUsage.

DiskUsage is really quite a simple application: upon being opened, you are prompted to select a storage location to view (internal storage or SD card).

Skyhook Sues Google For Interference In Contracts With Motorola And Samsung, May Have A Case

That's A Really Nice Suit

A nice little piece of litigation cropped up on the mobile news radar today - Skyhook, a WiFi/GPS location services provider, is suing Google for "forcing" certain Android device manufacturers (specifically Motorola and Samsung) to utilize Google Location Services instead of Skyhook on the DROID X and Galaxy S devices as their primary location services provider, respectively. If you're thinking "but Android is open source," stay tuned kids, I'll be explaining why that doesn't matter so much in this case.

Skyhook's complaint, filed in Massachusetts, makes 3 basic allegations:

  1. Google knowingly induced Motorola to breach its contract with Skyhook;
  2. Google intentionally interfered with Skyhook's "advantageous business relations";
  3. Google engaged in unfair and deceptive trade practices in the above and other actions which injured Skyhook.

Motorola Mobility CEO: No Tablets Until "Early Next Year" At Best; We're All "Oh, Really?"

During the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference yesterday, Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha said, “I will only develop a tablet if it is sufficiently compelling. Hopefully, that is early next year.” In fact, according to his comments, it seems that they haven't even started development of a tablet yet.

This doesn't quite jibe with what we've heard before. In mid-August, word around the 'net was that a Motorola tablet device was coming to Verizon sometime in November. The next day, rumor had it that Moto was working directly with Google on a 10.1" Android 3.0 tablet. We're talking separate rumors here, not one stemming from another.

Amazon & Play.com Open Pre-Order For HTC Desire Z And Desire HD, Release Date And Pricing Revealed; Free On £40/Month T-Mobile UK Contract

Yesterday, HTC announced that the G2 and EVO would be going international under the Desire Z and Desire HD names (respectively). With the help of a tipster, Engadget managed to find the phones listed by UK company Play.com and on Amazon.de/Amazon.UK. Retail pricing ranges from £470 for the Desire HD to £430 to £499 for the Desire Z.

Dual Display-Rocking, 4G-Packing, Russian Device Makes Its Debut... In The (Russian) President's Office

File this one under the "it had to be done" category: a dual screen Russian Android phone. And not just any dual screen Android handset; this baby has one screen on the front and one screen on the back. That's right, no flipping open, sliding, or anything of that sort, merely turn the device over and you're facing the other screen.

Oh yeah, and it turns out that other screen is curved. While I fail to see the advantage in this, apparently Russian president Dmitry Medvedev did, for he seemed fairly impressed with the device when it landed in his lap (OK, his office).

HTC Developing Tablet, In Cahoots With Google, Expected Release Q1 2011

From the Unsurprising But Still Exciting department comes this fresh tip, via everyone’s favourite rumour rag, Digitimes. With a suitably vague allusion to “Taiwan component makers”, Digitimes claims that HTC will be leveraging their strong partnership with Google in releasing a tablet worldwide.

Much like the Galaxy Tab, HTC’s take on the new tablet market will be powered by smartphone components and will feature similar performance and design quality. This doesn’t really give us much to pin our hopes on, but as AndroidCentral points out, the supposed Q1 2011 release date aligns with the previous release of the Nexus One, and we know how special that was.

Change Keyboard Automatically With Orientation, Using KeyboardManager [Root][Tutorial]

One of the more obvious settings missing from Android is the ability to use one keyboard, say Swype, in portrait orientation, and then automatically switch to another keyboard when the phone is in landscape.

This feature has been oft-requested, and is something that is strangely missing from many mobile OSes. Well, the clever clogs over at the XDA-Developers Nexus One forum have managed to figure it out with a little workaround.

However, the hack only works for those on rooted phones with access to the /system partition as Read-Write. Thankfully that is most phones, nowadays. In the words of the hack’s creator, ne0fhyk:

A Few Notes

  • it is quite big - almost 14MB, but it doesn't yet support apps2sd in Froyo. I'm sure that is coming later
  • the graphics, physics, UI - everything is very well done. It's a direct port from the iOS version using the NDK (Native Development Kit) - not a Java rewritten version
  • in my opinion, the copycats, such as Ninja Kaka and Fruit Pirate are nowhere near as good
  • the new Arcade mode is coming soon - for now it's only available on iOS
