Will Shanklin
Will's typical, run-of-the-mill story is that of 'classically-trained actor turned Android smartphone and tablet writer.' If you catch him quoting Shakespeare, it's not because he misses it, but because he desperately wants his Masters in drama to count towards something.

evo3d

As expected, Sprint just unveiled their upcoming EVO 3D handset and the EVO View 4G tablet. Both devices will have WiMax capabilities on Sprint's "4G" network (there was no mention of LTE, as Sprint is rumored to be transitioning to). No prices were announced today, and the release was announced as "this summer" (we expect a June-July release to compete with the iPhone 5).

HTC EVO 3D

As seen in our live blog of the event, the EVO 3D will have a 4.3" stereoscopic (for glasses-free 3D) qHD display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and dual 5MP rear cameras that capture 3D.

opera

Android versions of the popular Opera browser have just received some huge updates today. Both Opera Mobile and Opera Mini now sport feature sets that should make them among the most sought-after browsers on nearly any Android device.

Opera Mini, which compresses pages on Opera's servers before delivering to you (for better speeds on phones with slow data connections) now has the following:

  • Pinch to zoom
  • Improved panning and zooming performance
  • New UI optimized for tablets
  • Refreshed user interface
  • Share
  • Open link in background

Meanwhile the more traditional Opera Mobile browser (for when your data speeds are just peachy) got the following upgrades:

  • Adobe Flash support
  • New UI for tablet devices
  • Much faster and smoother panning and zooming
  • Improved text-wrap on zoom
  • Smart-tap: auto-zoom and highlights links if ambiguous link click
  • Remember tabs from previous session

You can see Opera's promo video of the new updates in action in the clip below:

These have been much-anticipated updates for two of the speediest and smoothest browsers in the Market, but we are still looking forward to absent features like User Agent switching and full-screen mode.

Today it has been apparently confirmed that the name will be Droid Charge (not that we ever doubted the original sources). Engadget has obtained the following image, which clearly shows the name of the phone from what appears to be an unknown retailer's internal system:

Have you been itching to get onto Verizon's speedy LTE network but just aren't sure that the HTC Thunderbolt is the right phone for you?

It looks like at least one Android tablet manufacturer has finally realized that $700-800 slates just won't cut it against the (starting at) $500 iPad 2 in the eyes of most customers. In case you missed our Live Blog, Samsung has finally announced its upcoming Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1, both of which will launch with Wi-Fi-only versions - and we finally have an Android tablet that can compete with Apple's slate in one of the most important categories: price.

There are three new promo spots out for the Xperia Play, but have no fear - there are no thumbs in any of these (aside from the ones that would normally be attached to a human hand that is). That doesn't mean these commercials are any more - shall we say - traditional though, as Sony Ericsson has now turned to actress Kristen Schaal (from Flight of the Conchords and Dinner For Schmucks) to promote the gaming abilities of the upcoming "PlayStation Phone" with a quirkiness and dark humor that will likely appeal to many Android fans.

matlock doesnt like nook

Microsoft announced today that they are filing legal action against Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec for their collaborative role in manufacturing the Nook Color. Why would Microsoft be suing for anything even remotely related to the Nook Color? As you probably know, the Nook runs a version of Android and Microsoft owns several patents which it claims Android violates. Microsoft says that anyone making an Android device needs to pay them, or else they are going to do as they have done today - and sue them.

It looks like some juicy info is already coming out of CTIA, as Pocketnow managed to snap some photos of a promotional display that Samsung already has set up. The display shows many details for the yet-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, answering many questions that have been buzzing around the tech blogs for weeks - and showing us the first custom UI to be laid on top of Honeycomb.

The tab will, of course, sport an 8.9" (diagonally-measured) display, attempting to strike a happy balance between the 7" and 10" slates.

aftermath att tmobile

Now that the dust has settled a little bit on the proposed deal that, if approved, will shake up the US wireless landscape, what more is there to know about AT&T's buyout of T-Mobile? Several stories (reported by All Things D) caught our attention regarding the aftermath of the deal:

Sprint Scoffs At Deal, Says The Wireless Market Would Be Altered Dramatically

While most experts seem to agree that the deal will most likely get FCC and Department of Justice approval, Sprint (not surprisingly) doesn't have a lot of nice things to say about the buyout.

While Cricket may not be the first (or second... or third...) US carrier you would normally consider signing up with, they have a deal on a variant of the LG Optimus One that certainly caught our attention. The LG Optimus C (we are guessing that C is for Cricket) is being sold off-contract for a mere $130 (after a $20 web discount and $50 mail-in rebate).

So while it won't exactly replace your Thunderbolt or Atrix, the solid and affordable smartphone from LG can be bought without a contract for less than most high-end phones sell on-contract.

lg thrill 4g in theatres now

We have known for some time about a high-end 3D smartphone from LG that was among the manufacturer's upcoming high-end releases. Up to this point, the glasses-free phone had been referred to as the LG Optimus 3D and (along with the G2x and the G-Slate on T-Mobile) we knew it would be hitting shelves within the next several months. While the release date is still a mystery, we now know that it will be known as the LG Thrill 4G and will be exclusive (at least at launch) to AT&T in the US.
