Still riding high from the success of the LG G3, the Korean OEM is looking to capture some of the budget market with a pair of low-cost 3G phones. The LG L Fino and L Bello have several of the features that made the LG G3 great with much more modest specs.
Ryan is a tech/science writer, skeptic, lover of all things electronic, and Android fan. In his spare time he reads golden-age sci-fi and sleeps, but rarely at the same time. His wife tolerates him as few would.
He's the author of a sci-fi novel called The Crooked City, which is available on Amazon and Google Play. http://goo.gl/WQIXBM
All it takes is a single button and some concentration to help a bizarre type of jellyfish perpetuate its species in Deep Under the Sky. In return, you get to explore an amazing technicolor world on the dark side of Venus. This is the newest game from the developer of the similarly trippy Incredipede, but it's a much more zen experience.
You have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of the latest gaming craze to sweep the nation—Swing Copters. It's like Flappy Bird, but vertical. Yeah, it goes up instead of to the right. Revolutionary. This is the second game from Dong Nguyen of .GEARS Studios, and will presumably be the first one he doesn't unpublish for mysterious reasons in a few months. It's free with ads, but the supposed in-app purchase to remove them doesn't seem to be present in the Android version.
IR ports are becoming a thing again with flagship devices from Samsung and HTC now commonly sporting them. They aren't used for terribly slow data transfers like back in the old days, but for controlling TVs and stuff. The built-in apps on the phones are okay, but Smart IR Remote is in a league of its own, and now it's added voice commands through Google Now. Take a gander at this video and be impressed.
Big changes are happening over at Humble Bundle that could mean a lot more games for you and more money for charity. It's only been a few weeks since the most recent Humble Mobile Bundle launched, but there are going to be many more going forward. The Humble Bundle website is getting a special mobile section that will serve as home to a new Android bundle every two weeks, and it kicks off with the Sega bundle.
Plenty of US smartphone users have owned a ZTE device, but they might not know it. The Chinese OEM has been providing phones for carriers to re-brand for years, but its US presence has grown considerably. The unlocked Nubia 5S Mini will be a test of how positively the brand is viewed when it launches on August 27th for $279 on Amazon.
It looks like Facebook is again testing a new bit of functionality in its Android app with a subset of users. After the most recent update, people are suddenly seeing a built-in browser that loads timeline links rather than booting you out to a full browser. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing depends heavily on how you feel about the Facebook app in general.
