Android Continues Enormous Market Share Growth, Samsung Keeps Top Spot Among OEMs

In case you thought Android's extremely fast-paced growth was being exaggerated, comScore's latest report on mobile market share might just convince you otherwise: From December 2010 to March 2011, Android not only kept its first place position among mobile platforms in the US, but it shot up 6 percentage points - far greater than all other platforms.

In fact, the only other platform that had growth was - predictably - iOS, with a 0.5 point increase. RIM, despite holding second place, dropped a staggering 4.5 points, while Microsoft and Palm both fell by 0.9 points. The gap between Android and second placed RIM is now at over 7 points, and is continuing to grow.

Hell Freezes Over: App Sideloading Coming To AT&T - Maybe The World Really Is Ending This Year

AT&T has taken a lot of heat from Android fans, and for good reason - they were the last of the four major US carriers to truly embrace it, and even then they made the controversial decision to block users' ability to sideload apps - i.e., install apps not offered on the Android Market. Their intentions were only to protect users from "bad apps," but of course this also meant that users have been unable to install any type of beta apps or, more notably, the Amazon App Store. Fortunately, they plan to reverse this decision going forward, as Senior VP of Mobile Devices Jeff Bradley announced:

We may not know exactly when HTC's first foray into the Android tablet world will launch (though we would guess sooner rather than later), but if you simply cannot wait to crack open that case and tear into the user manual, we have good news for you. A PDF file containing the manual has been leaked, along with a several nice-looking wallpapers. Inside the manual, you'll find a full run-through of Sense 3.0, as well as more information on the Scribe software.

[Report] Twitter Purchases TweetDeck For Between $40 and $50 Million

Twitter has been pushing its own official clients onto more and more devices - including Android - for some time now, and the idea of them buying out another popular Twitter client is certainly not a new one. That's why it won't come as too much of a surprise to hear that Twitter has reportedly acquired TweetDeck for the sum of around $40 - 50 million, a purchase that includes cash and Twitter stock.

UberMedia, who also owns Twitter clients such as Twidroyd, was also in talks to purchase TweetDeck for $25 - $30 million, but Twitter ultimately beat them with a counteroffer.

Sony Unveils Its Own Pair Of Honeycomb Tablets - The S1 And S2

The tablet news just keeps on coming. In the past few days, we've already caught wind of two Honeycomb tablets from Lenovo, and now Sony is officially revealing the S1 and S2 tablets. The event is being live blogged by the Wall Street Journal here, but thanks to an official press release we have plenty of details on both the tablets. First up, the S1:

  • 9.4" display
  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
  • "Off-center of gravity design" (check out this mockup for an idea of what this means)
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity

And the S2:

  • Two 5.5" 1024 x 480 screens
  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity

Both tablets will also be joining the Xperia Play as PlayStation Certified devices, as they will be able to play PS1 games using on-screen controls.

Lenovo's Honeycomb-Powered ThinkPad Tablet Leaked, Set For Release This Summer

In case you aren't sold on any of the current crop of Honeycomb tablets, Lenovo is about to throw their hat in the ring with the ThinkPad Tablet (also called the Think Slate). The folks at This is my next got ahold of a PowerPoint with all the specs, and this tablet can certainly hold its own amongst the competition:

  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • Android 3.0 with custom Lenovo UI
  • 1280 x 800 IPS 10.1" display
  • 16, 32, and 64 GB models
  • USB, micro USB, mini HDMI ports
  • Full SD card reader
  • 3G and possible 4G connectivity

Interestingly enough, the Think Slate will also ship with two key optional accessories: a pen and a "keyboard portfolio case," which seem to mimic the HTC Flyer and Asus Transformer, respectively.

Everybody's favorite non-Honeycomb tablet is inching closer and closer to its US launch. The WiFi-only version of the HTC Flyer will be available for pre-order exclusively from Best Buy starting this Monday (April 25) for the rather competitive price of $499. It may be lacking in a dual-core processor, but hey, at least it won't be identical to the upcoming flood of Honeycomb tablets.

Google Makes Android More Attractive For Google Apps Users With New Remote Capabilities

Just another step in Google's efforts to make Android more appealing to businesses - an update to the Google Apps Device Policy application has added three new features to make your Android device more secure:

  • Remote Location: Any Android 2.2+ device can be located remotely via GPS or by making it ring. The PIN or password can also be remotely reset.
  • Data Encryption: Android 3.0 introduced data encryption, and now Google Apps users have the ability to encrypt this data remotely as long as the App Device Policy is already installed on the device.
  • Google Apps Lookup: An entirely new app, Google Apps Lookup allows Apps users to find contact info for anybody in the Google Apps Global Address List.
