The original ZenFone would be two years old this month, but I doubt many of them are still in use. It was highly anticipated before release, and widely panned shortly thereafter. I have friends who bought the first generation ZenFone, and the issues were obvious right from the start: the battery couldn't last half a day, the UI was clumsy and unresponsive, it got so hot you could barely hold it, and the build quality and design really weren't up to par.
The 5.5-inch Huawei Honor 5X Marshmallow update is finally rolling out, solving one of the major issues we had with this device in our original review. With only 16GB of on-board storage (which we figured closer to 8GB after counting the OS and bloatware), Android 6.0 Marshmallow's SD card capabilities make this a much more attractive offering, especially considering the price! We saw the 5X on eBay for $159.99 back in March, but this is by far the best deal yet: $119.99 on Amazon for an unlocked device that will work on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US.Just to recap our initial thoughts:
The Honor 8 is Huawei's newest offering announced yesterday from China. It seems to compete with Huawei's own recent flagship, the P9, on every dimension except two: build quality (glass back vs. unibody construction) and price (this one is about 30% cheaper). We covered the P9 back in April, and the Honor 8 really is almost identical as you can see from the specs:
We have covered the Amazon Tap, Echo, and Echo Dot before, and even though there are some discoverability issues with finding the Alexa commands you want, we still think the platform has great potential – as long as it can keep up when the competition gets hot.
